Bill would ban text-messaging while driving

true indeed bdouble. We have this law here in australia and a friend of mine actually got done. Whilst not waving it around, its fairly obvious if your continually looking up and down at your phone whats going on to those outside the motorcar. None the less its more of a deterent knowing the conseqences of the action for the greater community then an actual enforceable law with the police looking out for offenders with every going patrol.

You have to be pretty stupid to be caught, but because the law is there and people know that whilst the police arent primarily looking for it, if they see it happening it is a crime -They tend not to do it as much, any reductions good considering the findings i sappose.
 
you know what law I don't get? How is it legal to have a passenger with you on a motorcycle?? Think about, I know all of you have seen it multiple times. It's the biggest crock of s*** I've seen lol

I will tell you, that, on a number of occassions, I have had to take a defensive action while driving in order to avoid an accident with someone clearly talking on a cell phone. Almost all of those times, it was equally clear that they were so distracted they weren't even aware of my swerving out of their way or nearly screeching to a halt. In other words, they went blythely on their way oblivious to the fact they were saved from an accident by my actions. :rolleyes:

Is putting on mascara (or other things) just as dangerous? Of course, but I've only actually seen that myself a few times in all the years I've driven. On the other hand, I see distracted, idiot cell phone users driving several times a week. Since the "hands free" law went into effect, that is definitely a less common sight.

No we shouldn't have to legislate against stupidity, but we are talking about humans that were more likely to use seat belts and child seats to protect their own children after a law was passed requiring them to use them. :rolleyes:

I'm with you %100 on this one. Driving in our cars is one of the last true freedoms we have. I have moral objections to baning things we can do in the car.

On a side note, the whole "hands-free" thing IMHO is more distracting than picking up a phone. Blue Tooth requires changing settings in the car. I use the headset.
 
I don't necessarily support more laws regarding what we can and can't do while driving, but I do support clear laws.

I'm sorry, but texting while driving is ****ing stupid. Stupid at a level that, not only do I not understand how people could justify that behavior, but I can't even understand how it is that the first person who tried it was able to form the asinine thought that it would be even remotely acceptable in the first place. My brain just doesn't work that way, though, because until I actually saw someone texting while driving a couple of weeks ago, I assumed it was one of those funny intentional exaggerations that everyone throws out -- it didn't even occur to me that anyone would really do that.

Sadly, however, they do. And since I was apparently wrong in assuming that the hands free law actually meant you couldn't put your hands on your cell phone while driving, I would absolutely support additional legislation that would accurately reflect how truly ****ing stupid it is for anyone to think they're coordinated enough to pull that off.
