Don't order those Artest jerseys yet
Kings president Geoff Petrie dismisses rumors of trading Peja Stojakovic for the Indiana forward.

MINNEAPOLIS - Ron Artest might want out of Indiana, but there is no indication he's headed into Sacramento.

According to Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie, the Kings and Pacers have not discussed any such deal involving Artest and Kings forward Peja Stojakovic.

"We don't have any trade discussions going on with anybody at the present time," Petrie said Monday. "I have not had any contact with anybody with Indiana. That's about where it is at the moment."

Artest, who missed 73 regular-season games and the playoffs last season after being suspended for triggering the Nov. 19, 2004, brawl in Detroit, told the Indianapolis Star on Saturday that he believes the Pacers would be better off without him. Of his possible new destinations, Artest said he would prefer to play for his hometown New York Knicks, but wouldn't mind joining Le-Bron James in Cleveland, either. The Kings were not mentioned.

On Monday, Pacers CEO and president Donnie Walsh announced he will put Artest on the team's inactive list for the rest of the week while he pursues a trade. According to ESPN's Ric Bucher, Walsh said there currently were no deals on the table. Artest, the 2003-04 Defensive Player of the Year who is in his eighth season, is averaging 19.4 points per game.

Petrie was the second member of the Kings' braintrust to deny any talk of moving Stojakovic, who is in the last year of his contract. When asked Friday about the Artest-for-Stojakovic talk, Kings coach Rick Adelman said: "I coach the team, and I'm telling you flat out, there has been no discussion about Peja. There has been very little conversation about anybody."

Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, also said he had "no knowledge" of dealings between the Kings and Pacers.

"If (a trade) goes down, it goes down," Stevens said. "But for right now, he's a Pacer.

"Ron is a player, so we're going to let the chips fall where they may."

While it has been reported that TNT analyst Charles Barkley - speaking before the Kings faced Houston on Thursday - said that Sacramento and Indiana were in discussions about the Artest-Stojakovic trade, a network spokesman indicated otherwise.

"We have checked the tape twice and have (found) no mention ... on an Artest-for-Peja trade," Jeff Pomeroy of TNT's media relations department wrote in an e-mail.

The fantasy trade has been a fan favorite since last season, in large part because of the Kings' need for quality defenders who can score and the fact that both players' salaries are in the same neighborhood.

Stojakovic is making $7.6 million this season. Artest, whose contract goes through 2008, is making $6.5 million this season, and is set to make $7.1 million next season and $7.8 million in 2007-08.

Not that the move is any fantasy of Stojakovic's.

"I can't really control what others are going to say or write about me," Stojakovic said. "I'm here. I like being here. I believe in this team, and I believe we have the potential to be good."

As does Petrie, whose vote of confidence regarding the current Kings group was his second in eight days.

"I've got confidence in our players, and you feel that way until there's a collective conclusion of some kind where you're past the point where you think it's reasonable to believe, I guess," he said Dec. 5. "They're just like anybody else, our players. And they're our guys.

"For me, we're going to keep working with them."

Just kidding.

Marty Mac's World: Stojakovic for Artest a bad deal for Kings
By Martin McNeal -- Bee Staff Writer

Can the Kings trade Peja Stojakovic to the Indiana Pacers for the wacky, tough and talented Ron Artest?

Yes, from a salary standpoint. Stojakovic is making $7.6 million this season, while Artest is at $6.5 million. Contracts need to be within 125 percent plus $100,000 for teams to make a trade, so that deal could be done, according to cap parameters.

Have they talked about a deal? Both Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie and Pacers CEO and president Donnie Walsh say no.

"There is no truth to us having any conversation. As far as I know, (the Kings) have not decided to trade (Stojakovic)," Walsh said. "I brought Ron in (Monday) and asked him if he wanted to be traded and he said yes, so now, it looks like we will trade him."

Now, should the Kings trade Stojakovic for Artest? Heck, no. You know what you have in both players. Stojakovic is a soft, somewhat temperamental, great shooter. Artest is an unpredictable, great defender and solid scorer, who can find trouble in a phone booth by himself.

Regardless, would you be surprised by any problems that materialized around Artest? This is a guy who a few months ago spoke of how he wanted to lead the Pacers to a championship and now this weekend said he didn't want to play another game for the organization.

A trade of the two only would make the Kings weaker in terms of spreading out opposing defenses. That's on the court. In the locker room, there is no telling what potential baggage comes with his ability to defend virtually any position.

Should the Kings ever decide to trade Stojakovic, what comes in return must be far more dependable and stable than Artest. Instead, look for Golden State and Miami to show interest in Artest.

Bibby's name still dirty
The Sacramento County District Attorney's office Monday announced that it found insufficient evidence to file charges against anyone on two separate incidents allegedly linked to Kings guard Mike Bibby and his "Team Dime" associates. Yet, that really does nothing to clear his name. Bibby's name - unfairly - has been associated with criminal activity and with no clear evidence connected.

While no warrant ever was requested for Bibby, police requested and were denied warrants for his brother-in-law and former Kings guard Eddie House (now with Phoenix) and Rob Robinson.

Maybe now, Bibby can go out in the city in which he plays and lives and not be turned away at establishments on the basis of accusations by unnamed complainants.

Part of me loving the Kings is that we are all that LA is not. They can have him

Los Angeles is an aggressive franchise used to winning titles and willing to do what it takes to make that happen.

I hate the Lakers but I can only respect them for that.

I only wish Petrie would do the same.

And what's that? That we have no rings and possibly will never get a ring?... Yeah lets be what LA is not... That's the way to go.

Maybe this franchise if it picked up Artest would evolve into the Detriot Pistons of the late 80's early 90's as the new Bad boys of the NBA. They played hard, fought hard and let the other team know that you will get hurt coming to the basket unlike the current team which asks the question " Do you want fries with that layup".....

I have no idea why Miami keeps being considered... they're a rival, in the same conference, a top team (will be), and Indy won't be getting Wade or Shaq back. Maybe a Posey package? I have no idea.

Golden State has too many wild contracts and young prospects to get Artest. Maybe Dunleavy.

I think there is discussions going on, and going by Petrie's history he is not going to come out and flat say "yes, it is true we are having discussions about an Artest for Peja trade." I think it will happen within a week after the Kings are done with this 4 game road trip. Petrie needs to make amends with the Fans after the Webber screw up he did(27pts 21rbs against KG yesterday) etc. The only way he can do so is to get rid of softie, and bring in hard core. Him bonzi, and bibby would be the best 1-3 in the league, even better than kid, carter, and jefferson. Now if he doesn't we can no longer say in "Petrie we trust", bc outside of the Bonzi trade he hasn't done crap in 3-4 yrs except let go of veteran talent off the bench, and replace it with cheap, inexperienced NBDL player(s).

Yeah he's just keeping it quiet... How stupid do they think we are(the 2 GM's on both sides).... But we'll see.

wow, after everything that Petrie has done for this franchise, that is the way to thank him. Where were the Kings on the map before Petrie arrived. Webber has a one good game and all of a sudden it's all Petrie's fault. Get rid of softie, and bring in an idiot like RA. I respect Artest for his basketball skills, which I value more that Peja's, but why bother and think he's not going to do the same to the Kings. Take a gamble on Artest yes (since he's "cheap" and only 3 years left), but not giving up Peja. Package some of that worthless bench and try trading with it. Indiana needs a starting small forward, how about Kenny Thomas, and I'd give them that Martin kid anytime.

And doesn't anyone feel sorry for Peja. He is the only authentic King there is. Drafted by Petrie and the new era Sacramento Kings....!

If the Artest for Peja swap is really on the table (and at this point there are probably five people in the country who know the truth on that) and Petrie isn't pulling the trigger on this deal, since he has shown himself to be a mostly rational human being he must think one of the following three things:

1) the Kings have a good shot at getting Artest without giving up Peja (tremendous coup)
2) the Kings can get a better deal for Peja (unlikely)
3) he thinks either Peja will sign with the Kings or he'll get a sign and trade

If he's risking Peja walking in the offseason because he thinks Artest is crazy I'd say it's Petrie who's the crazy one.

He's a goner.....whenever players start talking like this, you kow they're on their way out the door. The maloofs don't play that.LOL

j/k

I think petrie should going to "Get Rich or Die trying" mode on this matter.

Everyting seems to going to the direction--trade Peja or lose him through free agency. The Kings really can't afford to add a third max/close to max contract.

this will probably be my only input on a peja-artest deal (or maybe not ;) )because i hate trade talk!

i think that Indiana is desperate to trade artest at this point. they've already said that they WILL trade him and the pacers team most likely will not welcome artest back as a pacer. So I think the extreme pressure in Indiana to trade him will result in a team not having to give up as much for Artest.

I am not in favor of an Artest for Peja swap because the guy has proven time and time again that he is VERY unreliable! What would make me think that he'll be happy in Sacramento and not go crazy and say stupid things? His baggage is just too much. He could just poison the locker room and the team. That's a risk that you're going to have to take if you trade for him, and there is a very high possibility that it will happen. You don't win very often without team chemistry.

The Pacers CEO said they are looking for young talent, not veterens. In a way I am quite relieved.

Yes, but he didn't just say that:

Walsh declined to discuss specifics, but when asked if he likely would demand some or all of the Knicks' three first-round rookies as part of any deal, Walsh said, "I'm not in the market for veterans. It has to make sense either for our future or financial sense or both."

Even an Indy Star guy mentioned Peja/Artest a couple times on PTI today.
