The bidding heats up
The Kings are one of six teams to make an offer to Bonzi Wells.

By the time the NBA free-agency period ends, Bonzi Wells might be back in a Kings uniform.

But two days into negotiations, the Kings have plenty of competition for the shooting guard. Wells' agent, William Phillips, said he already has received six offers, including one made by the Kings on Saturday that is believed to be for more than the midlevel exception (approximately $5 million). Phillips has made a counteroffer and is waiting to hear back from Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie.

While Phillips wouldn't disclose the origins of the other offers, he said his optimism regarding Wells' market appeal has been warranted.

"There were some teams that called that kind of raised our eyebrows -- one in particular," Phillips said. "There was a very, very good conversation with them."

The Kings have had their own conversations outside of Wells, inquiring about former New Orleans point guard Speedy Claxton, center Joel Przybilla, former Kings forward Darius Songaila (most recently with Chicago), and former Los Angeles Lakers small forward Devean George.

The Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reports the Kings also are one of four teams with interest in former Dallas center DJ Mbenga, who is a restricted free agent.

With the Kings lacking punch behind Mike Bibby, Claxton, 28, would provide it on both ends of the court. Considering the Hornets agreed to terms with former Kings guard Bobby Jackson on Sunday, Claxton is not likely to return. The Sixth Man of the Year candidate averaged 12.3 points, 4.8 assists and 1.5 steals last season.

Claxton, who made $3.6 million last season and was a member of San Antonio's 2003 championship team, reportedly seeks a four- to six-year deal worth $4 million to $6 million per year.

The Kings, who can offer their midlevel exception, might have a recruiting edge. Coach Eric Musselman was Claxton's head coach with Golden State during the 2003-04 season, and the two remain close.

"Eric Musselman loves Speedy," said Bill Duffy, the agent for Claxton and Przybilla. "So that means a lot. Stay tuned."

Przybilla, who is entering his seventh season, is considered a distant second to former Detroit center Ben Wallace among the best available big men. Przybilla's fate might be tied to that of Wallace, who reportedly is coveted by Chicago. The Bulls have ample salary-cap room to attract the defensive star, but if they can't land him, Przybilla will move up Chicago's priority list.

As for Przybilla's potential role with the Kings, Duffy said he envisioned him sharing time with starter Brad Miller. Przybilla, 26, averaged 6.1 points, seven rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game last season with Portland.

"I think it'd be a good situation," Duffy said. "Brad's an offensive player. Joel's a defensive player. It'd probably be a nice combination. There are five or six clubs that have also called, so we're definitely looking at (the Kings), among others."

Wells, who made $8 million last season, seeks at least a five-year deal, and only the Kings can offer six years. Phillips will not comment on a desired salary range, but it certainly is above the midlevel exception many teams are limited to offering. Denver and Detroit reportedly are pursuing Wells, and both could offer more than the midlevel exception via sign and trade.

What's more, if the Pistons can't re-sign Wallace, they certainly would have more money to pursue Wells. Charlotte, Atlanta, Chicago, New Orleans and Toronto are the only teams under the estimated $52 million salary cap.

Phillips said he plans visits to each of the suitors but that Wells, 29, must work around a family obligation next weekend. After the visits, Phillips said, it could become clear which way Wells is headed.

Petrie wasted no time in his pursuit. Per league rules, contact first could be made at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Saturday, with teams unable to sign free agents until July 12. And while Petrie told The Bee two years ago that he often waited until the morning to place calls, saying "the days of the midnight raids are long gone," Phillips' phone rang at 12:01 on Saturday.

Maraker on board -- When the Kings leave for summer league in Las Vegas on Wednesday, former Pacific forward Christian Maraker will join them, reports the Record in Stockton. The 2006 Big West Conference Player of the Year had two workouts with the Kings before Wednesday's draft, but was not selected.

The Maloof can afford that?

I love two names, Claxton and Pryz. Especially Pryz.

And I miss one name. Songaila. Kings are interested in Songalia, who is solid back up PF? That means.... one of our PF - maybe KT - would go out?

And... Kings are looking for Devean George? SF? We have Artest and Garcia, and looking for George? ... Well, it may imply that Garcia would be involved in bigger trade, which will deal with KT or Miller..?

That's all my speculation. But the news that Kings are looking for backups for PF and SF make me a little excting (for KT) and nervous (for Garcia).

Nice observations. Really makes you wonder... you know, Petrie is not easy to predict... makes you almost want to close your eyes and wait until something officially happens...

I really wouldn't put much stock in this article. As I mentioned in another thread, this was everyone's agent calling the Bee and every other paper in the country to make it sound like their clients are attracting a lot of interest. There's no way Bonzi has six offers (or at least not six serious offers) and there's no way the Kings are interested in Songaila and George, who do not come closing to filling needs. Songaila and George are represented by the same agent, Mark Bartelstein, who must have made a little phone drive yesterday.

Also, it's amazing to see Amick repeat the garbage that the Pistons will have more money to spend on Bonzi if they don't sign Ben Wallace. Um, no, they won't. They'll have the MLE unless they want to S&T.

Wow. I didn't notice that. Thanks for the infotmation. And Claxton and Pryz also share one agent. :)

Devean George a King????? I think not. ;)

Interesting that Claxton and Joelzilla have the same agent.

The article seems awfully dated. Almost as if Amick filed it Saturday before leaving for his long weekend...

Some of the things he mentions have already been shot down by the weekend flurry of FA activity.

Ugg...if Bonzi really is "seeking a five year deal," no thanks...
Of course he's seeking a 5 yr deal. People have to get realistic. 30 ain't dead, and the absolute standard when players reach that age is to sign one last big deal (if they can) taking them right up near the end of their career. Peja just got done doing it a few days ago.

Sorry for disagreeing but I think 5 years is just simply too long when we have 3 younger, cheaper SG's on the roster. :) K-Mart wouldn't become the starter until 2011...

Can you show me where it says you have to keep them on your roster until their contract expires?

Younger and cheaper does not equal better. If all you want is young and cheap, let's go get Donald Sterling to be the owner and camp out in the lottery for eternity.

P.S. As an aside if Kevin is in fact worthy of being a starter in this league, he would take over sometime before 2011.

If bonzi is going to shoot 60% a game like he did against san antonio why shouldnt we keep him. Kmart/Garcia/Douby still need some time to progress into more important roles. If we want to win now then we better resign bonzi and go after Speedy Claxton. If we are looking towords to future (not a good idea considering Bibby/miller/even Artest arnt getting any younger) dont sign Bonzi and save to cap room. I will have no problem if the kings sign Bonzi to a 5-6 year deal cuz they show that they wanna win now and not look towards the future. Our future is secure for now anyways (kmart/garcia/douby)

I give up! Sheesh! :o Doesn't anyone else wanna see K-Mart become the starter?

Do I want to see Kevin eventually start at the 2? Yes. DO I think it would hurt to have him spend one more year coming in behind someone like Bonzi? Nope.

The spark Kevin can brink of the bench is tremendous right now. Sometimes people seem to forget that we have a bench for a reason. If we move our vets and make our bench players our starters, we're right back in depth hell.

nope. he still has to prove himself in that capacity. he came a long ways last season, but that was all under adelman and co. who knows how he will react to musselman and his staff. if kevin martin (a late first round pick) becomes a starter in this league, it will likely be because he was groomed very well behind veteran players. he's still young, so there's no need to worry. bonzi wells would be our starter until martin surpassed wells uses. that could happen in one, two, or three years, or it may not happen at all. the point is, you shoot for depth in a positional rotation every time. give me both wells and martin. that is one helluva versatile SG rotation, and one suited for almost any matchup in the nba.

i completely agree, we absolutely need to do anything within reason to resign bonzi. ben wallace is 32 and is looking to sign a monsterous contract even though he was not horribly effective in the playoffs. bonzi was a beast and clearly worth spending the extra buck to retain his services.

I like Kevin and hope he will be a starter at some point. But if you can keep Bonzi at a reasonable price, I don't see how you can pass it up.

Also, somebody has to be on the bench and I'd rather it be some good players who can hold onto a lead or increase it. Martin, Garcia and Douby are all still fairly young. If they're good enough, they will get their chance. And my comment was meant to mean that Bonzi may well be supplanted as the starter long before his contract expires.

Re-sign Bonzi. That should be our top most priority. I don't mind signing him to a 5-6 year deal. He deserves it anyway and he's proven himself that he will be a new bonzi coming in to Sac. K-Mart would'nt mind backing him up. I agree with some of you guys that we really need to maintain the lead and tempo when our bench players come in. He can also sub Artest at times when the opposing team does'nt have that much height so I don't think playing time would be an issue. Also, we should seriously pursue Pryzb. He's a great compliment to Brad off the bench and if we get Speedy to back up Bibby, we should have enough firepower to make a run for the championship.
Our line up:
PG:bibby, speedy, hart, price could probably be sent to the nbdl
SG:bonzi,k-mart,douby,garcia
SF:artest,bonzi,garcia
PF:sar,kt
C:brad,pryzb

If we get a rookie or 2 in the summer league, we could get rid of corliss, sampson,kt,or hart.

Well there is a point where the bidding on Bonzi gets too high to justify signing him with the plan to keep him but. But at that point the Kings still have the ablity to sign and trade to bring in a big man and are in a nice position to do so with Kevin, Garcia and Douby on the roster. What the Kings can't afford to do is let Bonzi walk.

Brad/SAR isn't a solid front-court defensively. There's no shotblocking, little defense, little rebounding. Little athleticism. I think you trade Brad the hell outta here, or Pryzbilla starts and Brad's on the bench if you don't want to trade either. Why? Defense and rebounding (for SAR) and size to compliment SAR or KT.

Also, KT doesn't want to come off the bench, remember? He'd be starting.

On the Pryzbilla matter, I think the odds of getting him in Sacramento is miniscule.

If Ben signs with Detroit, Chicago is going to offer him more than the MLE.

If Ben signs with Chicago, then it's probably going to be between Portland offering more than the MLE, and Sacramento and San Antonio offering the MLE. San Antonio can offer him the starting center spot. Sacramento could only offer him a backup to Brad Miller. I don't like our chances (barring a trade using Brad Miller).

The chances of Bonzi shooting 60% from the field during the season is damn near impossible. If Bonzi walks, you go after Claxton and Pryzbilla. I will have a problem if they sign Bonzi for 5-6 years, simply too much in my opinion. If Kmart is allowed to start over Bonzi a few years down the road then MAYBE, but id still rather it was a 3-4 year deal at the max.

You don't "allow" people to start. At least nobody you WANT to start.

As of today Bonzi Wells is better, tougher, more experienced than Kevin Martin. What he did in the playoffs Kevin could only dream of accomplishing, taking an All-League defender and just ruining him on national TV game in and game out. If at some point that changes, if at some point Kevin Martin is better than Bonzi Wells and has the experience to express that, there is no "allowing" to it. It will be quite clear, and Kevin will have to be a near star level performer. Somebody worth $10 mil a year himself. Starting isn't a gift to be bestowed on your favorite player.

And, depending on the matchup, I think you'll see a lot of the smallball lineup of Bibby/Martin/Bonzi/Artest/Shareef, as will as the bigball lineup of Martin or Garcia/Bonzi/Artest/Shareef/Miller. Martin is going to get his minutes. Garcia is the one who might be the odd man out.
