Shaw, Theus to meet with Maloofs in Vegas

After Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie had conducted two formal interviews for his team's head-coaching position, he joked that he felt a bit like Larry King.

If that was the case then, consider him Walter Cronkite now.

Yet after the interview total has grown to 10 and the position remains vacant, Petrie is expected to miss the next two sessions as the search continues.

Today in Las Vegas, Los Angeles Lakers assistant Brian Shaw and New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus will meet individually with Kings co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof. Petrie will remain in Sacramento for a draft workout which will include Washington center Spencer Hawes. Florida forward Joakim Noah was originaly scheduled as well but will not take part.

For both Theus and Shaw, this will be the second interview -- a distinction also held by new Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy, Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis and Kings assistant Scott Brooks. Petrie attended each of those second interviews.

Although Rambis has told people close to him that he is out of the running, Brooks still is believed to be a candidate. And with San Antonio's sweep of Cleveland in the NBA Finals, Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo is expected to be interviewed.

NOTE: The spelling of "originaly" is how the Bee spelled it. I guess they don't have a working spell-check. ;)

I dont know why, but I'm starting to feel a little intrigued by the whole Shaw thing. And Robert Horry as his possible assisant after next season...oh man my heart is feeling pain just thinking about that...but you gotta say he's got some pretty big sized stones to want that. You gotta love the irony.:D

You guys are pretty forgiving if you're willing to allow Robert Horry within 50 feet of your bench.

Honestly, that's like having John Stockton on the bench here in Houston (who also screwed us in the conference finals) And I assure you, if Stockton ever showed up, he would not be received very well.

I hear ya...but you guys have one thing that both Utah and us know nothing about...TITLES! If Horry can help us win one at some point...then dammit I'm for it...he broke my heart with that one shot, of course...but we want a title, no matter what...and if bringing him in will help out that cause...then I'm all for it! I will swallow my pride if it will eventually get us a Championship!

Call me cynical here but Petrie not being at these interviews with Maloofs just makes a bigger mockery of this whole process IMHO. If you are to believe the party line, Petrie is the one in charge of this process, yet here we are having 2nd interviews with candidates who are being considered for a job and the head man of this search won't even be there?! Thats just a bit fishy for me.

I agree. I mean, do you really think the Maloofs are evaluating these guys' basketball acumen? If so I shudder for the future.

It does make you wonder, doesn't it? It's almost as if Petrie doesn't have a favorite, so any candidate the Maloofs pick out of his select group, he'd be fine with it.

I don't think the Maloofs interviewing without Petrie means anything special. We know Petrie is watching potential player candidates workout today; he has already interviewed both candidates. Petrie said he wants a new coach on board before draft day; maybe this will expedite things. Just take things at face value and don't read so much between the lines. Hopefully we will have a new coach by sometime next week. Annie.

I have a hunch- just a hunch, mind you, that it will be Brian Shaw.

And I don't see Carlesimo getting interviewed since the Seattle job is essentially his to lose....

It pretty much stomps on and smashes to bits the theory that the Maloofs were going to leave Petrie alone to make this decision.

This process doesn't look too different from what happened last year.

It very well could be...

Petrie:"Hey Maloofs I really like these guys. I think they'll make good coaches"
Maloofs:"Alright we'll wine and dine them. I just want to meet them, take them out on the town, etc."

the proper thing to have done would be to add (sic)

I find it very hard to believe that Petrie would be fine with Theus as the next head coach of the Kings.

Hey VF21--sorry, just got on line late today. I guess when reading Carolija's post, I thought his questioning why Petrie wasn't there when the reason was he checking out a player workout had been reported was an example of "can't it be as "simple fact" instead of "fishy." To me, Geoff had a previous commitment and time is getting short before the draft (when a coach is desired to be in place) and maybe this just expedited the process. Certainly he and the Maloofs have had conversations about today's interviews. Annie.

No.

The Maloofs clearly stated they were going to let GP pick the coach this time. There should be absolutely no reason why they need to conduct a second interview without him. This is as clear and obvious as it gets that they will not let GP do his job.

No, no and no!

Petrie, after the SVG snub has said in the Bee that he is now in no hurry to find a coach so the deadline before the draft is not there any more.

Secondly, I understand that he is working out some kids but if he is the one that is the front man for this search then he must be the one that is present during the second interview because the party line is that Petrie is the one picking a coach. Sure there is a schedule clash but why can't interviews be re-scheduled so that Petrie is present for those? Why can't interviews be done in Sacramento with Maloofs present so the workouts and interviews can be combined in one of two days?

Petrie's absence pretty much screams to me that Petrie is not the one in charge. It tells me that the final decision will rest with Maloofs and Petrie is only presenting them with candidates.

Second interviews are always more specific and for Petrie not to be at those tells me that there is something fishy going on. It tells me that he is not the one in charge of picking our next coach, its the Maloofs. If Petrie was the one to make the call, then he would be present at those interviews and if there was a time clash, those interviews would be re-scheduled.

Good grief, its been made pretty clear from the outset, that the second interviews are for the benefit of the Maloofs. After all, they might want to know what salary the guy would like.

Second interviews are not always more specific, except maybe specific on contract demands. I've had second and third interviews with higher ups and it was always the person I was going to work for that made the decision. The other interviews were more of a formality and just a check for big red flags.

GP went to those other second interviews, while teams were still in the playoffs and the Kings couldn't yet workout draftees. At this point, he has better things to do than sit around Vegas hearing the same things and listening to the Maloofs go on for hours.

I'm sure GP has all the info he needs from the 1st interview, data, statistics, research and calls he's made around the league. If that isn't enough to make a decision, nothing will be enough, especially not a few more hours of blabbering.

I think people are reaching to read huge significance in GP not being at the second interviews.

Where was is reported that Petrie was picking the coach? The Maloofs have been involved since the 1st round of interviews were over.

i would have liked to see elston turner back in sacramento. But it would be nice to have Reggie Back. No way on shaw. too much animosity towards him on my part.

Petrie not being at the interviews today is no big deal. He had to be in Sac for the workouts of the college kids they brought in. The Maloofs have always been apart of the second interviews and they have to get to know the coaches too before Petrie hires them and Petrie is going to have the final say don't worry.

I have been a big Maloof supporter, and have argued in their favor on this and other boards. I just am not buying that the M's are not meddling too much in this. And there is no way at this point that I am buying that GP will have the final decision.

Oops! :o

I was just kidding with you. I forget that humor isn't always easy to convey online. I often think people try and read way too much into things so I was joking when I quoted something of yours that was pretty clear cut and acted as though it might have another meaning.

Sorry for any confusion.
