Bee: Of Mobley and Nene

With shooting-guard talent thinning by the hour, don't expect the Denver Nuggets to shore up that need by unloading power forward Nene, the one-named bruiser who can run the floor and defend.

Denver coach George Karl told reporters in Las Vegas that he wouldn't be surprised if teams such as the Kings expressed interest, possibly dangling a sign-and-trade offer with Cuttino Mobley, who has opted out of his Kings deal. At $3 million, Nene not only is cheaper than Mobley, he's a better player.

"Mobley, Nene, that's an interesting call," Karl said. "But my thing is we did a pretty good job of figuring out the two position, so let's not go crazy (about making trades)." Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe has said he does not intend to trade Nene.

The Nuggs know the Kings are interested, they might be biding their time to see if they can sweeten the deal or get more in return. But don't give up hope just yet, the Nuggets need a shooting guard too badly. It's the only way they can contend.

Yeah, this really looks like just a local Sacto restatement of the various earlier reports. Think people underestimate our little community on here sometimes -- we often get all these rumors and whatnot reported by various memebers before even the local papers pick it up.

Most likely Denver isn't going to trade Nene. I never really expected them to anyway. That's too much talent to give up for a 30 year old undersized shooting guard, even if he can shoot the three. There's some hope Denver will make the move if talks of a Nene extension don't work out for them, but right now it seems unlikely. Washington (Mobley for Kwame) suddenly seems like a more likely scenario but I wonder what kind of a salary Kwame would be looking for.

This guy still has potential, he's only 23, and if Petrie can get him for mobley I cant see why he wouldn't.

Mobley needs to be fit into a tailored role and all the other pieces must fit well around him, like in Orlando and maybe a little bit in Sac. Nene is a much better all around player and doesn't require as much attention, not to mention that he's got a better contract for a team. Maybe if Sac offered K9 plus Mobley Denver would be interested, but even then it would take a lot of persuading.

They showed in the playoffs that they are sorely lacking in a solid shooting guard and perimeter shooting, and the only way they are going to contend is to upgrade at that position. If they don't get a solid 2 in the offseason that's essentially another year of being good but not good enough. And I actually think Denver would be a great fit for Mobley, he'd just have to keep chucking open threes and Denver would be happy.

If they wait and don't deal Nene, they still won't have solved the 2 guard issue, they'll win a lot of games, look tantalizing and then get bounced from the playoffs. Then Nene is a restricted free agent and it's highly unlikely that they're going to be able to pay him what he's worth to be essentially their third power forward. They already have KMart and Camby signed to huge deals, and Carmelo is up for a big contract in 2007.

Nene is more valuable than Mobley, but in this case I think the Kings actually have a pretty good shot at him, unless Denver finds another suitor elsewhere. I'm officially paranoid about a Nene for Caron Butler swap.

I agree with your analysis. Kiki has a big decision to make this offseason: at what point do you consolidate talent and make a serious play at the championship? If he waits much longer, free agency decisions might be out of his control.

That said, if we want Nene, we need to sweeten the pot by giving them either KT or Corliss, taking on Najera's bad contract, and throwing in a first.

Like I said in the Free Agent Tracking Thread, Denver will not give up Nene.

They simply won toooo many games to give up an atheletic, shot blocker, who still has tons of potential. They have firepower with Miller and Anthony. Although it would be in there best intrest to get a perimeter shooting guard, and it is on the top of their list, it is not a big enough hole to give up Nene.

true but is mobley the ONLY guy we can get? what about other trades? what about waiting for finley and houston to maybe get released? what about mid season trades? what about next summer?

i mean we do have OTHER options dont we? its not mobley or bust.

I think it all depends on Lenard. From what I understand Lenard is working out in the summer league, if he looks good maybe they don't feel they need a SG. It seems like they are going to make a decision on him by the 14th. So, maybe we will know more after Thursday.

Looking at the available free agents I would say that Mobley seems to fit their outside shooting need better than anyone else. I'm not saying they would give Nene up for him but he seems the best available choice.
