Musselman faces scrutiny

The Kings' struggles raise questions about the coach's job security.

As if he needed a reminder of the tenuous nature of his position, there were two waiting on the road.
First came Monday's trip to Memphis, where Kings coach Eric Musselman returned to his last working locale to see Tony Barone instead of Mike Fratello coaching the Grizzlies. Fratello was fired in late December.
And tonight at Minnesota, Musselman will shake hands with another interim coach, Randy Wittman, who replaced Dwane Casey after he was fired Jan. 23 despite a better-than-expected 20-20 record. It's also the team that in 1991 fired Musselman's father, Bill, the first coach in Timberwolves history.

Yet as the Kings' season has slipped from promising to hopeful to desperate in the wake of a 17-26 record -- with only Memphis and Seattle below them in the Western Conference -- their first-year coach has avoided the same fate.
As for how secure his status is for the immediate future, Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie would go no further than to say Musselman is the coach of the moment.
"It's the same thing I told you with (former Kings coach) Rick (Adelman) and every other coach: They're our coach until they're not our coach," Petrie said. "He's our coach right now, and we're doing everything we can to help him. What else can you say?"
Asked whether Musselman had been told he would be the coach at least until the end of the season, Petrie would not directly answer.
"When we hired him, we told him we were looking at the longer term," he said. "So let's see what we can do."
When Musselman boarded a plane out of Memphis last May bound for Las Vegas, he had a plan to dazzle in the interview for the Kings' job. He did just that, signing a three-year deal worth approximately $7 million.
Musselman's latest trip out of Memphis came after a 124-117 loss that typified so many of his team's problems, among them shoddy defense (an opponent's season-high 58.6 percent shooting) and late struggles (they led by 10 points entering the fourth quarter).
With the latest loss coming against a Grizzlies team with a league-low 12 victories and no signs of progress, the question of Musselman's status is being raised earlier than expected.
The Kings have lost 11 of their last 14. They have fallen against some of the worst squads (New York, New Orleans, Memphis and twice to Portland) in that stretch and, of particular concern to Petrie, lost close games. They are 6-9 in games decided by five points or fewer and 0-4 in overtime games.
"To win games consistently, we're going to have to start playing with a little more precision at both ends of the court, especially when the game's on the line," Petrie said. "It still comes down to superior team play and being able to execute what you need to do, especially at the times of the game in which it's critical. It's frustrating. That's for sure."
With the preseason goals including a playoff berth, the Kings are 4 1/2 games out of the eighth and final spot shared by Minnesota and the Los Angeles Clippers.
"I don't think that, at this point, we expected this, to be where we are today," Petrie said. "People draw a lot of parallels a lot of times between sports and life, and one thing that is pretty true about both of those is that sometimes they're both full of rude awakenings."

Of course, every time he said that, the coach being asked about was gone within a year.

Has the Geoff oodled?

It makes me wonder.

a) you could say a lot else, and you didn't Geoff. Muss could actually be in trouble.
b) that said, Muss's "wisdom" in not hiring any experienced assistants could almost pay off for him. Most of the staff are relative kids, and "his" kids at that rather than Kings insiders. Its possible the only possible interim coach might be T.R. Dunn, and I've never gotten the feeling anybody considers him head coach material. Scott Brooks I think is the #1 assistant. Would he be for any other team?
c) any removal of Muss at this point would once again be part of a very stupid front office doing the big stupider and going for that #8 seed.
d) and what the hell is this "doing everything we can to help him" stuff? So far as can be told the only thing the front office has done to "help" has been to issue hen oodling comments. Calling up Justin Williams does not count. If that's all it takes, 2/3 of this board could do at least as well as GM. The only question is whether the idiot is Muss saying "no please leave me stuck with the seven dwarves up front", Geoff who after all assembled all themidgets and apparently liked them, or the delusional owners tying everybody's hands becuase they are the most chicken**** gamblers in the history fo Vegas.

Asked whether Musselman had been told he would be the coach at least until the end of the season, Petrie would not directly answer.
"When we hired him, we told him we were looking at the longer term," he said. "So let's see what we can do."

-- note here that Amick provides all the context and implied threat to the otherwise uninformative quote. Nonetheless, Geoff again could have answered "yes", or "I think it takes a new coach at least a full seaosn before you can get a good read on how its working" or any other standard answer. He chose not to.

Unless Geoff is using the royal "we" there, is that actually an admission (obvious though it has been) that his read on this squad has been sadly sadly mistaken? If so, that's both refreshing...and frightening. If it is a royal "we" mant to encompass the Maloofs, it could almost be characterized as a shot.

Yeah, I thought it could have been a shot too. And, at some point you've got to wonder what would keep Petrie from turning on Musselman. Obviously this team wasn't supposed to be a contender, but I don't think it was supposed to be SO bad either. Now you either think the coach isn't doing his job, or the team that was assembled doesn't have the talent to do any better than this. If Petrie gives Musselman his enthusiastic support, what does that mean about the team Petrie put together?? And granted, I think the Maloofs have been pulling some strings, but I guarantee the Maloofs aren't going to look at themselves when they are pointing fingers.

Pull the trigger Petrie. There is still time. The season is only half over and we are within 4 1/2 games. The team will rally. They have no fire under Muss. They don't listen to him. They have the ability/skill to play with anyone they just lose their focus. Muss is going to have a nervous breakdown. Can his *** before he makes us look any worse. We don't need to be the laughing stock of the league. Make a move.

I want to see Geoff himself sitting at the head of the bench for the interim, not Scot Brooks or TR Dunn.

Muss's staff is like a bunch of interns. I think it is ridiculous and embarrassing to see that staff huddle up... like a bunch of kids who won a contest to run an NBA team for a day.

My point as well. Normally when a young guy is hired he has at least one coach who has been around the block in the NBA. The Kings coaches really have no experience at the NBA level except Scott Brooks and TR Dunn and both have had limited experience as Assistants. Looks like all they do is huddle up and write down stats in their notebooks.

A misnomer if there ever was one -- "we are within 4 1/2" games is actually we are 9 games unde .500, whihc means we would have to go 24-15 from this point out just to reach .500, which in all liklihood is not going to get you the final playoff spot. Not that there is ANY reason to want it. First round extermination baby. To equal our 44-38 of last year, which got us #8, we would need to go 27-12. That's for #8.

Enough already.

Have they been attending the games or have they disappeared again?
It seems to me they have not been in attendence at many games. Which bothers me.

On the other hand, its possible that they were just being bombarded with negative, critical comments throughout games. Maybe they are at games, but not courtside or where they are visible and so "availalbe?"

I think it's more of an indictment of the coach. Guess even Petrie knew at the beginning of the season that this squad won't compete for the championship. What he might have felt (and I guess most people on this board shared that view) is that the squad shall compete for a playoff spot, and obviously, the performance has been much worse than expected (might be for the good in the long term though). Since coach is the only major piece that changed (not counting Bonzi, since Martin is playing so well), major blame goes to him.

That said, I have wondered for a while if the Maloofs have given a mandate to Petrie to rebuild the team from scratch. With the arena issue, plus with them taking a more active role in finding their own man for the head coach position, they have too much invested to opt for a full fledged rebuild. Soon, they might not have any choice, but don't know if there was a difference of opinion in the front office on this.
