The funny thing about debates: One can't argue with oneself. It's a two-to-tango sort of situation, which officially means there is no debate about who the Kings' starting power forward should be among the power forwards themselves.

A week after Kenny Thomas made clear his preference to start and a day before the Kings' preseason opener against Dallas would force coach Rick Adelman to choose between Thomas and Shareef Abdur-Rahim, the newer King said he won't be petitioning.

It's not Abdur-Rahim's style. And, truthfully, he didn't think it was the Kings' style, either.

"I had never known this team to worry about stuff like that, and I'm not going to be a part of it," said Abdur-Rahim, a nine-year veteran who joined the Kings in August. "There ain't no point trying to make something out of nothing. I don't really think this team's focus, or this team's priority, is having spats about who's going to start and who ain't going to start.

"The focus should be winning. Coach will figure it out. He's been around this game longer than us."

On the surface, the idea of Abdur-Rahim not starting seems unlikely. Besides the disparity between career statistics (19.8 points per game, 8.1 rebounds for Abdur-Rahim to 10.9 and 7.4 for Thomas), Thomas also might provide more off the bench than Abdur-Rahim. The six-year veteran easily could transition between small forward and power forward, which would come in handy because Adelman needs help behind Peja Stojakovic.

"I don't look at (the role) as a backup," Adelman said. "If you're talking about Kenny and Shareef, you're talking about two of our top six players. You've got to find a way to get them (both) on the floor. Whoever doesn't start should certainly be on the floor for more than 15 minutes per game. You can only start five guys, so we've got to."

Roster logjam - The conversation likely will never happen, the one in which Adelman asks team owners Joe and Gavin Maloof to reconsider the current plan of keeping only 13 players on the roster when they could have as many as 15.

But doing so sure would simplify Adelman's job.

After the Kings' first cuts Monday consisted of forward Dan Langhi and center Anwar Ferguson, there are five more to be made and, in truth, fewer than five players worthy of the ax. The Kings are high on young point guards Luis Flores and Ronnie Price, but only one likely will stay. They also must choose between big men Jamal Sampson and Luke Schenscher.

"If we have two young guys - and we like them (both) - I don't know," Adelman said. "Maybe we'll have a talk with the owners and say, What do you want to do here?"

Flores, who played in 16 games with Denver and Golden State last season, is itching to get started just like the rest of the squad. "I think tomorrow and the next couple of games will be an opportunity for myself to show that I understand the concept of our offense, and I can run the team," Flores said. "I can't wait. You get kind of tired of playing each other every day. You want some new blood."

SAR is a class act if I have ever seen one in the NBA. I think his willingness to do whatever it takes will be a big boost to this team.

Not terribly woried about SAR right now (I will note he's had some issues over his career, but he's saying all the right things for us so far). More worried about the other guy. KT is what he is, but part of that has been a perpetually unahppy guy through his career. Bigtime chip on his shoulder. Powers him to always try to prove everyone wrong. But also has caused issues and people just get tired of it after a while. Tyrone Hill syndrome. He has to get over it and realize this is what he is on a top team -- a top bencher. There is not an elite team in the league that would start him. His choice is to accept his role an try to help us join those elite teams, or choose instead to spend a career wallowing as an undersized underqualified starter for lottery squads. Would think the choice would be obvious, but we'll see.

Damn, Ferguson went from making it to the last cut last year to getting cut the first time around. I guess thats not our "Ben Wallace" type player were looking for.

poor anwar.... i was looking forward to seeing him play.... go luke, use the force.... or baby hook.... which ever gets you on the team..... what do we do with sampson? is he any good? i dont know about this team anymore....

My admiration for this young man grows every day.

I agree; he's a class act.

SAR has a great team first attitude.

i wish some of that would rub off of kenny thomas's me first attutide.

You should have seen how he handled Portland. From being a star PF to being moved to SF, and subsequently to backup SF. He didn't complain then, he should be the starter here, but he won't complain. But can you imagine the Nets fans if Shareef comes off the bench for us? Ouch.

Shareef doesn't have enough energy to argue right now during Ramadon, or however you spell it. He has no water or food from sun up to sun down. He's like...F it...whatever happens happens. I just want a cracker.

Truthfully, I'm getting sick and tired of KT. It started when he was whining that Darius was starting over him. All this dude does is whine. If this goes on much longer I hope he gets the boot by RA and is sat all year long.

The thing is, KT has a lot to offer. Although he's very much undersized for the 4 spot, he does have a lot of skills that the Kings can use. I just hope that he realizes that coming off the bench may just be the best way to utilize him and for the team to succeed.

When it comes to the real season:

We all know SAR is going to start.
SAR knows SAR is going to start.

So why struggle against the inevitable?

I'm glad to see KT is going to keep fighting for his PT. A good 10-15 minutes from KT per game could be the difference maker that gets us to the WCF.

As someone who has followed KT’s career since his days at New Mexico, I can say he’s NOT a whining, perpetually unhappy guy. If he was Philly and others wouldn’t have lined up to sign him to 50+ million dollar contract. Please remember Larry Brown was still calling the shots in Philly at that time. Larry has a history of valuing players with character and heart and would not have signed a problem child. I’m also sure the Petrie did his homework before sending C-Webb off to Philly, being KT was the player with the most value we got in return.

If you need a villain at least wait for the regular season to start!!! Then make an educated statement based on his actions and play, not an excerpt of a small article. If he makes an *** out of himself I will gladly apologize to all the new KT haters out there.

First, please do NOT assume that simply because we're critical, we're haters. In addition, we saw KT for a period of time AND he actually did whine IN PRINT to the media about playing time. So please do not presume to lecture us on all things Kenny Thomas.

You're a player fan, so of course your perception is going to be just a little biased in his favor. We understand that but on the other hand, you need to understand we're talking about the team we love. It's about the name on the front for most of us. We want the people who will do the best for our TEAM. I won't even go into any details of his obscene contract. As far as the Webber deal goes, a lot of people will say we did the best we could considering the questions about Webb's physical health and future possible injuries.

Kenny Thomas is no Chris Webber. Never was, never will be. If you're trying to say he is, then you are - no offense - delusional.

If Kenny wants to truly participate and be an integral part of a winning team, he should be willing to do whatever it takes - be it start OR come off the bench and play major minutes. Both are very necessary to the success - or failure - of a team. If KT thinks he's irreplaceable at power forward and HAS to start, I think he's going to be facing a major disappointment.

I like his willingness to accept any position. If he keeps the same attitude when it goes down to passing then we're in good shape.

To be fair, I don't recall anyone suggesting he's (KT, that is) as good as Webber.

I just don't want him complaining about PT/starting. I can understand he might be a bit miffed after posting pretty good numbers coming in mid-season and seems to get "forgotten" during our pursuit of SAR. I think he is trying to say, "Hey, I thought I did a pretty good job being thrown in this situation". And I'd agree with him on that. I still think, like many others, he may be best off the bench. I also think RA will make the decision he thinks is best for the team and if that means KT starts, so be it. I still think the job belongs to SAR, and he will ultimately be the starter.

You are right though. It is all about the name on the front with this team and the fans.

Sorry, I read this:

...and thought that might be what he was implying. That's why I qualified it with the "IF that's what you're trying to say..."

I think Kenny, while a VERY good player, is more suited to the East than the West. If, however, he can adapt and come off the bench, I think he well could earn sixth man honors...It's pretty much up to him and his mindset IMHO.

KT seems to be the odd man out here. He doesn't seem to have the same mentality as the rest of the team. Seems like he is just a "me first" type of guy. This could just be how he is portrayed by the media, I'm not really sure.

^^I don't think it's that people don't like him. If anything, what we're waiting to see is if he'll be willing to play from the bench. His reluctance before and pointed comments about being a starter could be an indication that he's not thinking of the team first. When people criticize it's not because they don't personally like a player (at least not most of the time). We're not criticizing Kenny Thomas, the person. We're showing concern and expressing criticism about Kenny Thomas, the player. BIG difference.

Actually, I think he's a pretty decent player, I am just not liking the bits and pieces we've heard during interviews. Maybe it is KT, the interviewee, we just are not really happy with? :)

The thread started out about SAR. It's HIS attitude I'm really impressed with. And I think it's more the type of attitude we're familiar and comfortable with. I don't think KT has done anything thus far to really alienate most of us, but he also hasn't made any real indication it's more about the team and less about him and that's what I think I'm waiting to hear.

Sampson and Luke will compete for the third center spot. Might be able to keep both if good, but I don't think so because of the way the roster will be.

What do you mean "you don't know about this team anymore"?

We picked up Sampson in August. Sampson has good rebounding and shot-blocking skills, an NBA-body, and played well for the Bobcats. Before that he didn't do much (Injury, released).

Go check some of these out, bottom post:

Also, there are a few articles about him at Sacbee.

Isnt Sampson already signed. He is on the Kings roster sheet on their website.

i agree

I thought so too with that, Kings4321 , but it seems not to be with the Sacbee articles this month and late last month. Like a partially guranteed deal.
