The hot topic in the NBA this weekend was the demand of Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson to be traded.

The Kings appear to be part of that conversation.

Since Friday, the Kings have been added to the short list of teams that are said to be -- according to various reports -- discussing trade options with the 76ers. On Sunday, a league source confirmed to The Bee that the Kings are involved, though it is not known whether they are pursuing Iverson or perhaps part of a deal involving more than two teams, or what they are offering.

The source declined to be identified because he was not authorized to discuss the deal.

At the Kings' game against Atlanta on Sunday, Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie would not say if he was in discussions involving Iverson.

"As a matter of rule, we do not discuss possible trades," he said.
Kings co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof were also tight-lipped, even beyond the question of whether they're pursuing Iverson.

"Talk to Geoff, because I don't know," Joe Maloof said by phone.
Gavin Maloof paused before answering.

"Hmmm," he said. "You're going to have to ask Geoff."

Asked if he was a fan of Iverson's game, Gavin wouldn't comment.
"Well, I don't want to say, I don't want to say," Gavin said. "Check with Geoff."

Kings swingman John Salmons, a teammate of Iverson last season, was shocked by the news of Iverson's demands -- and owner Ed Snider's approval to pursue a deal.

"Just having been in that situation, I wanted to know what was going on," Salmons said. "I was surprised that he said it, that he actually said it."

If the Kings were, in fact, trying to land Iverson in Sacramento, the most obvious deal would likely involve the swapping of point guards. Kings point guard Mike Bibby -- who has an early termination option on his contract that would allow him to become a free agent after this season despite two seasons being left on his deal -- is owed $12.5 million for this season. Including the $18.2 million Iverson will make this season, his deal has three seasons and approximately $59 million remaining.

The Kings would have to add a piece or two to make the deal work, as the players' salaries in a trade must be within 125 percent of each other. They also have five players with expiring contracts that could be attractive to Philadelphia, allowing them to clear up salary cap space for next season: Corliss Williamson, Jason Hart, Vitaly Potapenko, Ronnie Price and Maurice Taylor.

The Kings also have a glut of younger players with promise to offer, from the seemingly untouchable Kevin Martin ($1 million this season) to second-year swingman Francisco García (approximately $1.1 million) and rookie Quincy Douby ($1.2 million).

The interesting subplot would be in the history between Iverson and two of the current Kings players. Formers 76ers Kenny Thomas and Salmons were both relieved to leave Philadelphia and have often spoken of the difficulties that come with playing with an offensive star who dominates both the opposition and the ball.

Salmons, in fact, was hired partly on the basis of how well he produced for the 76ers when Iverson wasn't on the floor, with Petrie saying when he signed him that Salmons showed his true potential then.

"It is what it is," Salmons said. "If he ended up here, I'd play with him. I'd welcome him in."

Kings small forward Ron Artest, whose trade demands from Indiana a year ago led to his Sacramento stop, said he was more concerned with the current crop than whether Iverson would work with the Kings.

"We had a nice little (run) last year. Had a chance to win a lot of games, do a lot of damage, and just need to build on that this year," Artest said.

So an unnamed league source says the Kings are involved. The Maloofs are repeating the mantra "Ask Geoff." And Geoff is simply saying "we do not discuss possible trades."

Truly intriguing...

Yes very intriguing to say the least. At least there is some excitement going on with the team for now. I'm one of those that hope for some kind of change, hell anything! ;)

NOTE: Since our local paper finally got wind of the whole "Iverson to Sacramento" rumor, a new thread is probably a good idea. The other one was getting pretty unwieldy, as people generally don't like to have to read 260+ posts to get their info.

It's about time.

Well that doesn't help.

Saw that one coming.

Sounds like you do.

Wait, whats going on here?

Kings swingman John Salmons, a teammate of Iverson last season, was shocked by the news of Iverson's demands -- and owner Ed Snider's approval to pursue a deal.

"Just having been in that situation, I wanted to know what was going on," Salmons said. "I was surprised that he said it, that he actually said it."

Nice to know.:)

Kings small forward Ron Artest, whose trade demands from Indiana a year ago led to his Sacramento stop, said he was more concerned with the current crop than whether Iverson would work with the Kings.

That's what we all thought Ron. The best move may have been to bring Muss in for defense alone and leave Rick the O...oh well.

This article is a textbook example of how to fill column space with pretty much nothing. The Bee HAD to come out with something about the rumors but they got nothing from anyone they could run with. So the "league source" is brought out. Did they talk to someone from the league on Sunday? I'm sure they did. But who that person was or whether or not they actually knew anything is a puzzle.

The source declined to be identified because he was not authorized to discuss the deal.
Interesting phrasing. Not authorized to discuss the deal could mean a plethora of things ... or nothing.

As I said, this whole thing becomes more and more intriguing to me because of what we're NOT seeing.

Well, at least we're not bored. And look at the number of people still sticking around into the wee hours of the morning...

Which to me almost implies something is going through. Maybe christmas comes early and we get KG with a big purple bow. Well at least I will have good dreams tonight...whenever I can fall asleep. :)

Listening to KHTK this morning, FP is all excited about getting AI. His only reason "it would bring some excitement".

Well, it would, for awhile. But then it would kill this team. Just like AI killed the Sixers and his teammates there.

FP kept quoting Iverson's point total. Great. He's leading in points on a team that's 5-14 and playing in the East!! FP knows baseball and it's fine to have a selfish player on a baseball team because he still only bats 1 time out of 9!

Just looking at the Sixers with Iverson gone and they look like a totally different team. Yeah, they just lost those 2 games but they're just getting used to playing with each other.

Check this: http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/basketball/16211174.htm

How things can change. On Saturday night, against the Magic, Webber did not perform like a slow-footed guy headed toward longer minutes on the bench and eventual retirement, but more like the energetic, versatile guy people remembered from his successful career with the Sacramento Kings.

The veteran forward established season highs of 40 minutes of playing time and 8 assists, adding 19 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots while shooting 8 for 15 from the field.

Although the Sixers lost, 86-84, for their seventh consecutive defeat, Webber's performance - and his enlarged role - signified the new, post-Iversonian order. With it, coach Maurice Cheeks and his players may be seeing an encouraging sign of what's to come.

"We're putting the ball in his hands a lot, allowing him to initiate the offense," Cheeks said. "He's making some of the other guys so much better. With the ball in his hands, it allows the other guys to feed off him."

Interesting...I keep flip-flopping between fear and excitement. It could be a lot of fun to watch and start winning games...or a huge fireball dramatic meltdown that will drag the team down for a couple of years at least.

Does Minny have anything that WE want? I'm talking three-way here. Because the Kings could also improve their team by helping get AI to KG. Both those teams are sort of desparate, I'm sure the wolves would hate to get nothing, they got their own impending meltdown to worry about. And I'm not suggesting we take advantage and try to ream a desparate team or anything, but yeah that might be nice.

Hmm. This minny roster is pretty ugly...don't see anything I like here. Maybe I'm not a smart shopper.
