Evans waits in the wings

The Kings' moves, along with Cuttino Mobley's, help to determine his fate.

One might think news of Cuttino Mobley's plans to sign a five-year, $42 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers also would increase the chances that free-agent swingman Maurice Evans will return. That is not necessarily the case. Perhaps the best-case scenario for the Kings as well as Evans would have been the team's ability to execute a sign-and-trade deal with Mobley, the team's starting shooting guard last season, that would have brought a bigger and more physical power forward to Sacramento.

That would have allowed the Kings, who are over the salary cap, to retain their mid-level exception (approximately $5 million) and use some of it to re-sign Evans. However, if the Kings decide they still want to improve at power forward, as flirtations with Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Antoine Walker and Nene suggest, they'll either have to do so via a trade or use that mid-level exception and, in that case, likely lose the ability to re-sign Evans.

Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations, said Thursday that using the entire mid-level exception on anyone other than Evans could make it difficult to retain the athletic 6-foot-5, 26-year-old. But Petrie knows that much of free agency and offseason trade activities have yet to play out.

"All our options still are open," he said with a snicker when asked about not having made any agreements with free agents Mobley, Evans or Darius Songaila.

The Kings, as well as players' agents, do not know all the specifics of the new collective bargaining agreement. Under the old agreement, there was a "million-dollar exception" (raised to $1.7 million last season) that could be used every other season. Petrie, who used that last season to re-sign Songaila, does not know whether teams can use that exception again.

Roger Montgomery, Evans' agent, said he and Petrie spoke Thursday afternoon.

Because the NBA agreement was reached late last month, teams will not be able to sign free agents until today at 3 p.m.

So, today ... around the NBA .... we'll get SOME SORT of an indication of just how much teams are interested in re-signing THEIR OWN FA's ... including the King's.

I'm not sure that was accurate...I thought that because it was signed so late the date had been pushed back until July 22nd this year -- the 15th is the normal time evey year. Am I confused here?

It is the 22nd. He's a week off.

Thanks for the clarification ... I think !!!

It's confusing, cause in the same sentence he says "Because the agreement was reached late last month .... "

This gives us something "somewhat productive" to do today .... to find out

And to find out, he'd probably have to ask someone (or look it up), so that's out of the question.

Are details not available yet, or is Petrie just playing dumb as usual?
~~

Not sure the if all the legal details are worked out yet. Most indications are that the teams are still in the dark about final dollar amounts. However, if that exception remains the same as the old CBA the Kings would not have it available until next year (under the old CBA, it could only be used every other year).

Yeah, a lot of details regarding stuff like that hasn't been finalized, which is the reason for the pushed back signing date to the 22nd, so that teams actually know what they can and cannot do to sign a FA. Which is why the day being today is wrong, because that would create a disaster with players signing deals that get voided a week later.

Anyone else find this statement really odd?

"All our options still are open," he said with a snicker when asked about not having made any agreements with free agents Mobley, Evans or Darius Songaila.

Geoff Petrie snicker?

That was my take. My first thought was he snickered because Marty wasn't asking anything close to the right questions.

Petrie has something up his sleeve...and I'm not talking about his arm.

;)

I for one take all these players saying they will sign a contract with a grain of salt. Until I actually see the words they signed the deal on july 22nd or after. Anything before that date is just talk. I can thank Carlos Boozer for me loosing my trust in agents and players saying they will sign. So until the name is on the line just chalk it up as hype.

Does anyone know when preseason starts? The summer league is 24 hours removed from us and i am jonesing for more Kings basketball. By the way i do not know about the west coast but they are airing two of the kings summer league games this week on NBA TV. One is at 4 pm on tuesday and the other is at 1 am Friday morning. Enjoy

Its seems like we have a lot of mixed opinions regarding evans, songaila, and the other free agents we have and on who we should keep, etc.... I have no idea what's gonna happen regarding evans and the other players we got... I also have no idea where our MLE is gonna go... What an interesting offseason its gonna be... Petries phone bill better be maxed out....
