Douby gets his first taste of Arco
Watching a Monarchs game gives him an idea of what the arena will be like.

Quincy Douby strolled into Arco Arena, listening to the chants, wondering if this Sacramento crowd would someday be calling his name.

The Kings draftee had only seen the arena on TV. Even with the Monarchs, not the Kings, on the court, he let the basketball atmosphere sink in. And it felt good.

"I had a big Kool-Aid smile walking over here," Douby said from his courtside seat next to teammate Francisco García. "Hearing so much about this place and this being my first time ever, it was real nice.

"Some of the fans showed me some respect. They said hi and congratulations."

The 22-year-old out of Rutgers said the whole experience has been surreal. Douby was drafted 19th overall by Sacramento on Wednesday. He greeted García at Sacramento International Airport on Thursday, his eyes full of excitement, his heart bursting with expectation.

"I woke up in the morning and wondered if it was a dream or something," Douby said. "You're working all your life, and some people don't get to that step. I got to that step of being in the NBA."

It's even more remarkable considering Douby has played organized basketball for only six years. Before that, he played pickup games with buddies and didn't follow the NBA.

He joined his high school team as a junior. One year and another school later, he lit up the scoreboards by averaging 35.6 points at Grady High School in New York.

"I came a long ways," he said. "Making it to the NBA is a real big accomplishment. I'm just real grateful and humble."

The Brooklyn-born athlete said his first purchase will be a 2007 Escalade.

"I don't have a car, so that's what I'm thinking of getting," Douby said. "This is definitely a life-changing experience for me, being in the NBA now. I have money now. But I'm not trying to think about it."

The noise of the arena muffled Douby's deep voice, but his gentle demeanor was unmistakable. He complimented Kings players and said he is looking forward to playing for new coach Eric Musselman, who stopped by Douby's seat to shake hands with his new guard. With Musselman also new to the team, Douby said he thinks they will come together nicely.

"He said he's looking forward to working with me," Douby said. "I'm excited to meet the other players."

He didn't have to introduce himself to García, his former roommate at the Reebok ABCD Camp, the largest high school basketball showcase in the country. García said Douby is a nice addition to the team and plans to guide the rookie by remembering things he struggled with last season.

"He's another great shooter to feed the basketball to," Garciá said. "I know he's got a lot of heart."

Douby did leave himself open for razzing by calling the Lakers his favorite team and Kobe Bryant his favorite player.

"I was just being honest," Douby said. "I also like LeBron James and Ron Artest. I like a variety of players."

Sounds like the Garcia, Martin, Douby dynamic might already be under construction. If Garcia can slip over to the 1 and provide backup for Bibby, we just got hella athletic off the bench. And yes, VF21 just said "hella"...

The kid needs some wardrobe advice and I hope he NEVER again makes the mistake of saying the Lakers are his favorite team. Other than that, he's just another reason to look forward to October.

GO KINGS!!!

Well, truthfully now, c'mon guys, how many Kings players on the current roster were actually Kings fans? I think Martin was the only one who mentioned it. But thats 1 out of 13. Would you want to be Knicks fan and be public about it? I didn't think so. So if you cannot fathom supporting your home team, go after one of the other perennial "american" teams, Lakers or Bulls.

The whole point is that the minute he heard his name announced by David Stern he had to quit being a Laker fan.

I'm sure the other guys on the team will explain it to him.

i seriously doubt it. who's left from those days other than mike bibby? i realize you were just joking, but i'm really hoping that many of the posters above aren't taking douby's laker fan status that seriously. who cares? he's a king. vlade was a laker before he was a king, as was doug christie for a short time, but nobody seemed to hold it against them. in fact, they're two of the most beloved former kings of the past decade. maybe i'll just never understand the blind laker hatred in this town. i am no fan of the lakers, and i'm particularly not a fan of what went down in '02, but its basketball. rivalries are sweet while they last, and memorable when they're gone (and, rest assured, this rivalry has been dormant for some time now). when the kings and lakers find themselves at odds again year after year as both teams improve, then we can bust out the laker hatred all over again. until that time, however, i really think all we've got is the general league-wide hatred of the lakers that seems to be so popular.

The FIRST thing Quincy Douby better do is get a GOOD financial advisor. He is the type of athlete most likely to be victimized because of his newfound wealth. Lawrence Funderburke wrote about kids like Douby in his book, "Hook Me Up, Playa." I sure hope Douby can survive the sharks that are undoubtedly already circling.

it was more of a general commentary on laker hatred in the greater sacramento area. and given kings fans' disdain of the lakers the last 5 years, i don't think its an overreaction at all. as kings fans, we all kinda understand each other, but this subject has me confused so much because it seems unexplainable.

Sorry, dude, but my hatred of the Lakers goes to the bone. And it has for a very long time. Before I was a Kings fan, I was a Celtics fan.

You over-reacted to my comment, IMHO. I even used the silly emoticon :p to show I was jesting.

Laker hatred is generational. If you don't understand the phenomena, talk to a Boston resident about Yankee hatred. It's about so much more than just the team. It's about everything from geographical differences to cultural mores.

Hide the skateboards. Send a U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker to the Strait of Hormuz, "Satan's Litter Box" has frozen over!

I didn't know Lawrence Funderburke was a author/writer. Interesting.
Yep. It's an interesting book about the financial aspects of going from just another college player to a big time professional athlete. I personally think it should be required reading for anyone who is thinking of entering the professional sports ranks, and not just basketball.

Thank you

It is so true. I barely understand why I can root for Shaq now that he is on the Heat. But I can. The whole LA Lakers existence goes against what the KINGS are to me. And it is reinforced whenever and with whomever I see them.

"All He has to do is play one game against them and it will all be clear" is how I feel as well.

My boyfriend has an Escalade.

I've given him so much crap about it since before we even started dating, that he was out test driving a Mini Cooper a couple weeks ago.

The kid has a right to buy the car of his dreams. Lots of NBA players buy Escalades.
Yeah pretty typical young guy dream. How many of us would rush out to buy something practical if we suddenly had a couple of million dollars?:p

I noticed in the press conference, some reporter tried to bait him into repeating his comments about being a Laker/Kobe fan. He did not even mention either. The words did not pass his lips. Quick learner.;)

Hatred of Lakers. I grew up in SoCal with that team, but cannot stand them now. NoCal-SoCal hate runs deep. Or maybe I should say NoCal hate and SoCal smug disdain run deep. A Kings-Lakers thing is just a way to express those feelings. (Note: SF/LA hate goes even farther back.)

LA is like a big brother who comes to your house and just about eats you out of house and home (water and more) and then sneers at you for being stupid and talks smack about you to everyone else. What's not to hate?;)
