Bee: Big moves by Kings? Petrie plays it patiently

Okay, I have to draw the line at Antoine Walker. I would sooner poke my eyes out with flaming pine needles than have to see him in a Kings uniform even if he was buried so deep on the bench you couldn't even see him.

Honestly...
LOL! Exactly my reaction. Maybe he could be on the inactive list and told not to show up.

*sigh* I guess I could choke it down in the interest of the future.:(

Teh year Bibby's contract expires we're due to be 19 million under the cap, however that's before the Martin extension(probably in the 8-10 million dollar range? SO for us to have REAL salary cap money to spend the summer of 09 we need to reduce Kenny's deal to at least shed 1 year off of it(Malik Rose does just that.) Martin's deal would likely replace Kenny's deal at around 8ish million dollars and then the Kings would have 17-20 million dollars to fool around with once Mike is gone. That's at least 2 very good FA signings as a possibility that summer. Two MAJOR FA signings.

If a 28 year old Rashard Lewis can get 15 million dollars Kevin is atleast going to ask for 11 IMO...

^The difference is that Kevin is going to be a restricted free agent and if the Kings and his agent can't come to terms they can go into free agency next year and the Kings can match any offer. Look at what happened to Gerald Wallace -- people knew the Bobcats would match and he ended up getting a deal around $6 million. Same thing happened with Wilcox and the Sonics.

The market for restricted free agents just isn't the same as unrestricted.

The problem with Walker is his incredibly poor attitude. On a team that's trying to go young and rebuild, it's tough enough to keep from getting players to keep trying. When you have a whiner like Walker in your midst, it would be virtually impossible.

I'd go for almost anyone else on Brick's list but NOT Antoine Walker.

True and if you are in full rebuild mode you have young palyers who will be influenced by the vets for better or worse. But The advantage in rebuild mode is that if all you are trying to do is gather expiring paper, give young palyers experieince while jockying for a lottoery slot then taking Walkers paper and buying him out is a win win and NOT a waste of money.

I would definetely agree with this, also. 'Toine' isnt someone you really want around your young guys and being ANY sort of influence...even though he has that ring with Miami, he's still one of the laziest players in the league, and I doubt has kicked his old partying habits. I wish we could bring in a guy like PJ Brown...but I'd take a Bobby Jackson any day of the week...he's someone that would be great for this situation. I would be curious to Brick's Nachbar/Collins for Brad inquiry, though...I'd do that in a heartbeat!

Exactly. The potential damage that could be done by having Antoine Walker around to "influence" our young players could easily and probably would exceed any kind of benefit from his expiring contract.

I don't see him as a "win-win" in any situation that involves us. We can have vets around who aren't Walkeresque in either attitude or performance.

If you think that an influence like Walker could really be that damaging then Petrie better focus on moving Thomas fast.

The Win-Win I refered to was in a buy out situation. We get the cap relife down the road AND he takes 0 playing time from the kids. And obviously of course is not arround to tinkle in the Kool-Aid.

If that's Petrie's plan, to get a few guys, cancerous or not, buy them out, and get a bunch of young guys out there, tank the next season or two to get high picks, then spend money in 09'-10'...um...sure, that's a plan, alright. It only took Utah 2 seasons, and I dont see any reason why it should take us any longer, to tell you the truth.

I just want Derrick Rose, he's going to be a stud. I don't care what the rest of the plan is, I just want Rose.

Hopefully there's a middle ground (like Hedo -- popular! Expiring before Kenny!)

Just a note, but the most nonsensical part of the hedo rumors is that he doesn't expire before KT -- he's got another one of those $7 mil a year contracts running through 09-10 too (last year is a player option, but he could well use it). So outside of swapping him for a KT type character on the idea that in a year or two he could be moved much easier than the guy we traded for him, he makes no sense financially either. Certianly not for Artest, where it becomes a step back.

We may not be making any moves until the trade deadline when playoff teams need someone to possibly push them over the top. And that's fine with me at this point.

That's exactly what we heard last year. And then the trade deadline came and went. And now we can look forward to the next trade deadline.

Vlade, I agree 100%, a lot can change over the next 358 days, but as of now I am a huge Rose fan. Chad Ford compared him to a more athletic Deron Williams. Sounds good to me.

I agree with this -- that just becomes an excuse after a while for doing nothing. For waiting for that "perfect" deal that never comes. Let's call 08-09 a plan, cash out for whatever we can get, and get set up for the next era.

Ah, my mistake.

3) even if the summer of 08-09 is the target, that is no excuse at all to keep ANY of the vets on the team (Mike, Ron, Brad, Kenny, Reef, Salmons) with long term deals. ALL it is is an excuse not to take on any worse deals in return. But if this is a rebuild, then its even MORE important to try to swap out your vets for chaep kids and picks, just so long as any major contracts you take back don't last beyond 08-09. If you keep the vets around, they win more games, and then you are stuck picking 10th again next year when you should be picking 4th and with a gaggle of kids and picks in reserve as well. You do NOT want to "compete", at least not successfully, while you are trying to stockpile talent. Its the difference between landing a potential superstar, or another Spenser Hawes (at best). Just for example, dealing Ron for Lee and Malik Rose would NOT in any way particularly hinder your 08-09 plan, as Rose's deal ends at the same time as Ron's. An 08-09 plan is no reason at all to be "patient", it is just a reason to be picky and have parameters.

EXACTAMUNDO!

Petrie needs to GET ON WITH IT. Make trades at MARKET VALUE that are at the least are not going to hinder the Kings in a cap sense, and GET ON WITH IT! Forget about this patience BS. That's all it is. Petrie is cutting his nose to spite his face. He thinks he's in control, that he's going to call the tune on the market value of Artest and Bibby? Yeah, right. That's like me wanting to sell my house for $1 million. I'd list it with an idiot and we could have open houses until Sacramento becomes a suburb of the Bay Area. In the meantime I'd lose out on thousands of dollars that I could have made from investing the proceeds of a realistic sale that never happened. Just continue to do nothing Petrie and you'll never make a bad deal, I'll give you that. You just won't make ANY deal. And what does that do for the rebuilding of this team. It POSTPONES the rebuilding of this team. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. GET ON WITH IT.

IMO cutting his nose off to spite his face would be throwing Bibby and Artest away for nothing. They are our MOST VALUABLE trade assets. They are our shot at expirings, young players, whatever. You can't simply say screw it! and dump the guys. Then you wind up with crap and bad contracts. He still has the whole freaking summer.

Whoa, dude. Take a pill or something.

;)

You do realize that rebuilding isn't like growing a chia pet, right? It's gonna take a while and I agree with BMiller52. You don't simply have a fire sale. You have to make the best of what you have but that doesn't mean throwing the baby out with the bath water. It took a while to get into this mess and it's gonna take a while to get out of it.

I'd buy your house for $1million dollars, yeah this is geoff petrie speaking, be patient we will i repeat we will trade our players at market value.:D

J/P!

That's it. The summer. After that the listing has expired. The last thing I want to hear at the end of the summer is: We'll have to wait until the trading deadline to get something done. We've already heard that before.

PETRIE, GET ON WITH IT!

Petrie's had two years to see the writing on the wall already. Bibby, he should have gotten rid of last year. Artest, that's the worst mistake the Kings have made in the last decade. He's got to cut his losses on that lunatic before training camp. Forget about the "fire sale" jargon. He's got the summer. That's long enough to "list" these guys and get market value. In fact, he's had PLENTY of time to unload Bibby already last year. So, he's behind schedule as far as I am concerned.

Good god, people, you can't even make trades right now. It's early July. The moratorium doesn't even end until July 11th. If it's September and no deals have been made THEN it's time to start with the drumbeat, but the summer has hardly even gotten started.

Who are the big free agents in after 08-09 season??? I haven't seen a list anywhere....does anyone have a link???

Actually, it wasn't Petrie who needed to see the handwriting on the wall. It was the owners of the team, IMHO, who were putting a lot of pressure on him to do bandaid deals and rebuild "on the fly." Remember, they kept talking about being contenders. They even bought into Artest's hype.

I think the Maloofs desperately needed this last season to realize the bandaids just weren't going to work any longer. When you toss in the failed Musselman experiment, I think you finally have a situation where the handwriting on the wall is now emblazoned across the sky in flaming letters.

It's always easy for fans to sit back and pontificate about what they would have done. Hindsight is, in fact, 20/20. But it does little good to continue to whine about what should and shouldn't have been done.

The past is the past.

I see a pair of owners who are finally using the "rebuild" word and a GM who has the responsibility of getting it done. You can second-guess him all you like but the proof will be in what he does from this point forward.
