After another tough loss, Kings practice is encouraging

It did nothing to erase the latest loss, but the alternative clearly would have been worse.

Following their latest devastating defeat Tuesday, the Kings turned in a practice that pleased coach Eric Musselman and basketball president Geoff Petrie.

"I was impressed with the way our guys worked at practice this morning," Petrie said. "They went in there and worked at it."

Some spirit, in other words, remains.

"I thought we had another really good practice," Musselman said. "The guys worked hard ... . I think based on today's practice and the competitive nature of it, I think we'll be ready to play Friday night (at Portland)."

Forward Corliss Williamson hopes to be back Friday, having missed the loss to Cleveland because of back spasms. He spent much of the practice running on an elliptical machine, his condition improved from the pain that kept him at home Tuesday.

Webber contact -- Chris Webber's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said he discussed with Petrie the possibility of the former Kings star returning last week.

When a buyout of Webber's contract was being discussed with Philadelphia, Goodwin said he also talked about the possibility of a Webber return with Kings co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof. Though Petrie said only that he had not talked to Goodwin on Wednesday, the chances of a Webber return seem slim to none.

Running hot -- Brad Miller was as frustrated by the Cleveland game as any of the Kings, but it still didn't feel as bad as the one before.

After missing the Los Angeles Lakers game Jan. 4 because of the flu, Miller played just nine minutes in Saturday's loss to Portland because of lingering effects from the illness. Miller said he went home at halftime, when his temperature was 100 degrees.

"I pulled in to hear that (the Trail Blazers) hit the shot, and I watched overtime," he said. "That was a disappointing loss when I'm healthy."

Miller has been running even hotter from the field, hitting 51 of 82 shots in the past nine games and scoring a season-high 24 points against Cleveland. He's among the many thrilled to see the old leather ball return Jan. 1.

"Obviously, shooting the ball is coming along fine," Miller said. "We got rid of that old funky ball and back to something that's worth a (darn)."

At one time, I loved reading about practices (and the antics that used to go along with it.) Now I am simply tired of it. First of all, I don't really believe it. If we were having such "great" practices, it would translate into at least bearable games. Secondly, at the risk of sounding like Iverson, practice is overrated- at least with this team. It appears that we have had a phenominal amount of wonderful practices and almost no wonderful games. Lastly, I am just tired of all the talk.

Sorry to sound so down. It is just a bit much to praise how well we have done in practice when them team is not only losing games in all kinds of new ways, they also seem to be on the verge of imploding.

Pretty much, yep. :)

As an aside, I wonder does Geoff watch all the practices? Or did he make it a point to be at this one?

I was wondering the same thing about Geoff as well. Hopefully, he was watching to see who he wants to keep. Maybe he was watching the interation between the players and the coach. Maybe a change is coming soon! We can hope, right?

Yeah, the "great practice" stuff wears a little thin. And, really, what else are they going to say?? "After watching these games & practices, we've decided our team is just not competitive enough to compete in the NBA so we are sitting out the rest of the season"?

Interesting to see that CWebb's agent has talked to Petrie & the Maloofs. I know it will amount to nothing, but it does indicate that maybe Webb isn't as adverse to coming back as some people think.

"practice? were not talking about the game - we're talking about practice."

Sorry, could not resist.

And its reached the point where Allen Iverson is beginning to look like a deep thinking philosopher full of sage advice.

Sounds as if GP and/or the Maloofs don't want Webber back, and there is nothing said about when JW will have gotten in enough practice to set foot in a game.

I guess we have our hobbit ball priorities all in order.

My thoughts exactly Brick. Why is GP at practice that is just not what you would expect from the Generl Manager. Maybe something is coming. Lets just all hope its the right thing.

Well Justin Williams was a start right?

Petrie's office is IN the practice facility.

Jerry Reynolds and Petrie were both at practice the other day and were talking about how much Justin Williams has developed physically since he was here last according to Jerry's podcast on Kings.com.

yeah, either that or everyone else is playing so badly they are making him look good!

...oh dear, I'm getting cynical and tired.....

Kings practice is encouraging? Gimme a break, i would look good practicing too, but if i stepped foot on the hardwood it would be another story.

Does anybody else think JW will get released again, this time without playing at all? Im hoping no, but expecting yes.

I saw an NBA commercial today while watching the Suns/Cavs game, it was based on teamwork, im sure yall seen it, it said something along the lines "if we play as 5, we can take on any 1 team", i remember thinkin "man, this should be put on repeat in the training facility", the 3rd quarter always seems to be 1 on 1 basketball.

Speaking of second halfs, what you do think the Kings do in the locker room back there that cool them off so bad? Im guessing they just sit around and watch Bibby play with his nails, they seem to be dead when they come back out from halftime.
