Bass Pro with Downtown Arena

I just saw the headlines at sacbee.com saying that Bass Pro Sports is going to be in the railyards and planning to open along side with a downtown arena. I haven't been following too closely for a while of where they would put the arena. Is it more offical now that it will go there? I guess this is a positive sign for a downtown arena.

Developer announces major tenant for downtown rail yard

Stan Thomas doesn't own the downtown rail yard yet, but his company announced Thursday that it had landed its first retail tenant -- Bass Pro Shops, a fishing and outdoors emporium with stores that include waterfalls, aquariums and sometimes restaurants and marinas.

Suheil Totah, who is heading up the rail yard project for Atlanta-based Thomas Enterprises, called the announcement "the biggest thing to hit downtown in years," and proof that the redevelopment of the rail yard is moving forward.

Bass Pro sell fishing gear, boats, outdoor furniture and a wide variety of outdoor sporting gear.

Company spokesman Larry Whiteley said the firm's original store is the biggest tourist attraction in Missouri.

Bass Pro plans to open alongside the site earmarked by Thomas Enterprises for a new Kings arena.
Totah said he has been negotiating for "several months" with the city and county of Sacramento over the logistics of putting a new arena in the railyard.

Totah said Bass Pro hopes to open by 2008. In order to meet that timetable, Thomas Enterprises and the city will have to make fast progress on completing the purchase of the railyard, cleaning up environmental toxics, building new infrastructure and widening and extending streets to better connect the rail yard to downtown and to Interstate 5.

That's actually a really good sign. There aren't many Bass Pro Shops in the US, unless they have been really expanding of late. It could be a precursor to larger fishing tournaments in the Sacramento area, which, on the face of it, is not a big deal, but every successful "event" Sacramento has puts the city one step closer to things like the All-Star Game. Sooner or later, we're talking BIG dollars and a robust economy.

So, it's still a toxic trap, there aren't enough roads to handle the increased traffic AND they don't even own the property yet?

Sounds like Thomas Enterprises may have a little work yet to do on getting those ducks in a nice neat row.

BPS, oh man I spend a lot of money there online. NO need for one here I would be broke!

BTW I cannot wait for the RENO one to open

Great Points.

It's not that bad. Last week Supervisor Dickenson stated on 1140 that the area where the arena is supposed to go is already clear and in fact the whole are is in the final stages of cleanup. If the vote were taken in November as planned, there would have been no delay on construction.
