Artest Speaks Again

What Ron says really doesn't matter. I don't dislike him, but I hope he's traded before the deadline. Unfortunately, I can't see GP moving two of our starters in the space of a few days. Just don't resign Ron at the end of the year.

It's not our choice. Artest has a player's option.

Once again I am remindded of the wisdom that Hicks left us with when we traded Pedja for Ron... "Don't pay any attention to what Ron says." Tha pear of wisdom has saved me countless hours of frustration, anger or even anoyance. I just have a mental "Mute Buton" when it comes to Artest.

Isn't it relatively common for a player to opt-out to test the waters and then re-sign if they want to come back? Or am I being crazy? If that was the case, I hope we wouldn't re-sign him. I still think he'll opt out once he gets the shock of a lifetime (us not winning the NBA this year)!

If he opts out. I think there are only two teams with cap space available to offer him a contract higher than the MLE; Philadelphia and I forget who. As it has been established he is a lunatic, it requires that his lunacy extends to the point where money is of no concern to him anymore.

He not only must be willing to accept the $3 mil cut in the first year by taking the MLE, it also means he must be willing to forfeit establishing his Bird Rights which in the long run can cost him 10's of millions of dollars in his life time.

Glenn, do you not think it's a strong possibilty that he'll opt-out? I know it's Ron, but I don't think he'd have strongly indicated he'd opt out if it wasn't a serious possibility. Don't forget the possibility of a sign and trade...

I don't think he will opt out. I think he says he will opt out as a face saving maneuver. He would rather it seem that he was leaving rather than being shoved out the door. Now that his main combatant on the team, Bibby, is gone, he sees the team making an investment in him. I think this is very important to Ron Ron. We all have pride and Ron is no different or perhaps is more prideful than most.

I think he will be with us until his third year is up and his full Bird Rights are established. It makes no sense for him to opt out if money is important and I have seen next to zero NBA players who do not value money especially at the levels we are discussing.

Let us not mix up his erratic behavior and talk with a lack of intelligence.

I was hoping no one would ask me about this. ;)

And, at the risk of incurring further wrath, I think Ron is our best player and although seriously flawed, a team who seldom has the opportunity to even talk to a star shouldn't toss one away so flippantly. A team on the bottom half of the market size needs to take a risk and Artest is a risk. What he has done that I am not aware of because it must remain a secret is simply unknown and I cannot formulate opinions on the unknown.

His contract cannot be extended because it is less than 4 years. Something can probably be done with his Early Bird Rights to bring about a sign and trade. He would have to opt out and the Kings sign him to an Early Bird contract. I don't know if this would jeopardize his full Bird Rights. Somebody else is going to have to research that one.

I am not going to get into a fight with anyone about this so fire away but don't expect a response. There is nothing more I can say and will not go around and around any more.

Indeed! I've always thought this about Ron...and this is the first thing I brought up with my roomie when I told him about the Bibby trade yesterday. HE is now the leader of this team, and the ONLY leader, and I think now that he knows that, there HOPEFULLY wont be any issues, with him throwing little tantrum's in the middle of games. For some reason, I think the more young guys we have on the team, the better...with Ron, because he loves to take them under his wing, so-to-speak, like he did with Francisco a couple years ago. So, maybe he can do the same thing with a defensive minded Williams, too...and make him his prodigy.

Unfortunately, at least two of Ron's tantrums have involved conflict with Reggie Theus. (The yell-fest between Artest and Theus during a game & the whole issue over whether or not Ron could play if he didn't practice). That isn't going to get better with Mike gone. In fact, it could get worse.
