Are the Kings entering a rebuild phase?

Will The Kings actually commit to a rebuild for once?

Not sure why that would be the case with Monk. He still has top 6th man talent

He is crazy inconsistent on offense, a poor defender and Perry already tried to move him with zero takers.

I like Monk for vibes alone though, but if I'm a rival GM I'm not seeing him as a dude worth spending good assets on.

I would think there would be some interest by the deadline. Circumstances usually change a lot between the off season and then.

Sabonis, Lavine, Derozan, and Monk are all considered poor defenders. Before Murray got his contract, those were 4 highest paid players. Crazy o_O

Vecenie was talking about how he is annoyed with these teams that just hoard picks and don’t make a move. Teams should be aggressive and look for under valued players that could shine in bigger roles instead of just tanking. Our ‘26 pick is off limits but if there’s a young player out there that could be a part of our future we should look into it (Kuminga aside). If and when Topic comes back id look into what it would cost to get him. OKC has no room for him.

Why do you specifically rule out Kuminga?

When I scouted Topic I was impressed by his passing but he looked like a streaky shooter and a poor defender. That makes him a risky player to build around in my eyes.

streaky shooter - yes
poor defender - well, not lavine/derozan poor, not monk poor, or god forbid, buddy hield poor... he's in range of bogdan/bjelica defending, below average. he does understand defensive rotations very well, his problem is lack of lateral quickness.

his number one quality is his head, and head is very underrated category in NBA. he's not lazy, not low IQ player and completely opposite of a hothead kid in any capacity. he will work on his shortcomings, so don't expect harry giles offseasons.

if we can get him cheap, i'm all in. worst case scenario - our best 6th player.

but it comes at risk - he's injury prone.

I wasn’t ruling Kuminga out, he’s just been talked about plenty.

Topic is a risk for sure, mostly due to injuries. 6’6 with a tight handle and great vision is a worthy gamble in my eyes depending on cost.

I dont hate the idea, but I'm very hesitant giving up assets for a guard upaude swing when we have a lotto talent already on the roster that we've refused to develop so far. I'd rather explore that option first before pursuing a Topic trade

I wasn’t suggesting now. He is getting chemotherapy treatment at the moment, OkC isn’t going to do him dirty and trade him now. He’s a guy I’d look at in the offseason depending on how the draft order shakes out.

If the kings end up in the 5-9 range we are more likely to take a lead guard like Flemings Brown or Stirtz. However if we end up lucky enough to draft a Boozer, AJ or Wilson we could flip the roster age immediately with a Topic addition.

A hypothetical:

Topic
Nique
Keegan
Boozer
Sabonis

It’s a long shot, but that’s a fun team
Also have the option to get really funky and try a
Topic
Keegan
Wilson
Max
Domas
lineup if we get slightly less lucky in the draft.

Yeh that tracks. If they aren’t able to trade them it’s an easy fix, minutes restriction. 28-30 minutes for Lavine/Deebo and a buy out for Russ (if a playoff team wants him only otherwise a minutes restriction for him as well)

The way Russ is playing, we may be able to get 1 or 2 2nd round picks for him. He's on a minimum contract and would be a terror for a championship contending team coming off the bench.

It's probably an unpopular opinion, but it does speak well for these guys that they aren't out there in the media throwing each other (or the coaching staff) under the bus. For the most part, everyone has been professional.

I'd guess that's not a terribly unpopular opinion! While many (most?) of us are looking forward to the Kings dumping some of these older vets, you can't ask for anything more than professionalism as they are called to do whatever the coaching staff is asking them to do.

ja morant and his gangsta sh*t... actually most of the grizz players
zion and his weight and his porno actresses
young socialite ben simmons and his very fragile ego
boogie and his short fuse
d'angelo russel leaks
trez and pounds of weed on his back seat (despite millions he has to prove something?)
kyle kuzma and his fashion
immature beasley
immature bagley
immature bones hyland

and a ton of players who are just struggling for a second contract led by deandre ayton

you want me to continue?

Allen Stiles is talking about Clifford, saying he's not getting better because of the mass of guards and the chaotic minutes. Actually, Stiles doesn't quite have it right. Clifford looks to me like he's getting worse. He started off the season looking confident in his game and his shot, but no more. Who would be? He's got vets freezing him out. And when he gets the paltry incoherent and inconsistent minutes he does, he has vets pounding the heck out of the ball and going iso, which doesn't behoove Clifford at all. If someone wanted to devise the perfect conditions to give Clifford a mind-F, they've found it on the Kings.

as well as Murray, Ellis, and even Carter

If we go back to SL, where Nique/Carter were the primary initiators, what stood out was Nique wanted to play within a team concept. It was move the ball, make the right read. And a big reason why that team had success in SL is because... they actually played together on offense

The NBA club has become

1. Russ in a PnR with a big. This has been good for Raynaud and pretty much the only real "team ball" action we've gotten all season. Monk has been one of the best PnR passers in basketball over the last 3 seasons and he's pretty much fully abandoned it to jack shots along with the rest of the vets.

2. Clear out the side for DDR to ISO or go set a ball-screen and let that guy take the possession. No matter who it is Dennis/DDR/LaVine/Russ/Monk. This has lead to the young guys to really looked rushed on the offensive end; because they know they're not going to get the ball back very often. Along with inconsistent PT and minutes.

Outside of the playing time issues, as the season progresses my biggest gripe with Christie have been his comments that he's not calling a lot of plays. He has old vets, that he is overplaying, and letting them make decisions on the court that are clearly not in the best interest of the team -- either with respect to current wins, or growth of you young guys. At this point, my only conclusion is Doug is either a terrible coach, or he is completely intimidated by the elderly "superstars" on the team. I'm actually pretty disappointed because last year I really did believe that Doug had potential as a head coach going forward. Now, feels like he is just completely lost.

100% accurate.

I’d also add a third point:

The vets all rest on the defensive end, making the young guys work extra hard on that end, so that the vets can save all of their effort/energy for scoring.

Westbrook hustles
He used to, but not the last few games. He jogs back on defense and does a lot of standing around, not fighting through screens or closing out.

I was a big fan of his effort when he first joined, but that effort on defense has quickly faded. He might have a few possessions where he tries but I encourage you to watch him closely the next few games. He is definitely not putting in that same effort anymore.

He was getting steals and applying ball pressure, so gonna have to disagree. Zach and DDR though. Just matadors
