Arco game report: Kings' ride on seesaw continues unabated

Project Green Light/Red Light continues.

Inconsistency could be a feasible strategy for the Kings in a seven-game playoff series. Start with a win, then a loss, a win, a loss: hope for victory at the end, never mind the heartburn for all involved.

The Kings' stomachache has come early, though. Their 112-100 loss to a desperate Minnesota club Sunday afternoon restarted the discussion over which identity this team will retain.

"We're showing spurts of having a playoff team, then we have games like this, or (Wednesday's loss) against Detroit," guard Maurice Evans said. "We really need to establish the type of team we are heading into the playoffs. (Minnesota) played like a team with its back against the wall. We played like a team that knows it's in the playoffs."

Except that they're not. With seven games left, the Kings remain fifth in the Western Conference, but just 5 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Minnesota. They have won three straight once since the Chris Webber trade.

The latest explanations

Mike Bibby and Peja Stojakovic, the former known as the team's clutch shooter and the latter as one of the world's finest marksmen, took only three shots each in Sunday's fourth quarter. It was the same number taken by Corliss Williamson. He missed all three in five fourth-quarter minutes and isn't known to carry comebacks.Center Brian Skinner, who has spent games past clogging the paint and limiting opponents' big men, was a non-factor as Kevin Garnett and Michael Olowokandi combined for a scorching 18 of 22 from the field and 45 points.

Forward Kenny Thomas is the up-and-down club's newest member. Two of his least-productive games have come in the last three games. He had 11 points Sunday, just nine at Detroit.

KG unplugged

Garnett is a self-described NBA fan, his knowledge reaching back to when the shorts didn't sag and the Kings weren't playoff regulars.

However thrilled he was to keep Minnesota's postseason pulse alive by beating the Kings, he said the new look in Sacramento is disappointing.

"It's very weird, Webb not being here and not seeing him and Bibby," Garnett said. "I think it's pretty sad, because you build legacies up on players and one-two punches. ... As a fan, I'm upset those two can't enlighten us on behind-the-backs and no-looks and the fun they (brought) here at Arco."

KING FOR A DAY

PEJA STOJAKOVIC
He showed rare signs of aggression on both ends of the court, corralling a loose ball, as well as sinking a few trademark jumpers. Stojakovic even blocked a shot.

SOUND BITE

"Kenny Thomas, Brian Skinner and Corliss Williamson, they're dirt workers. The other (Kings) are more finesse-y."

- Kevin McHale, Timberwolves coach on the Kings' new look

BIG NUMBER

11 -
Kings' losses at home, the most since the 1999-2000 season.

QUESTION POSED

WHEN MIGHT THE KINGS' ROLES BE MORE DEFINED?
No one could blame the Kings and all their new men for gathering maximum data before settling on vital decisions. But with seven regular-season games to go, the lines seem fuzzy when it comes to player specialties. Who's the No. 1 scoring option -Mike Bibby, Peja Stojakovic or Cuttino Mobley -and how can they get enough quality looks? Who yields and who guns come crunch time? Standing at the three-point line, Bibby was waved off by Mobley late in the game, negating a chance to hit another big shot. Coach Rick Adelman may have to exact the executive decision sometime soon.

Kevin Garnett, I couldn't agree with you more.

You can't make a statement about liking our old roster without being reminded of this, how sad. Personally, I want to continue to remember how much fun it was to watch those two work together. While I still love our club, I just like the previous years rosters better.

i think everybody's taking this quote the wrong way. none of us are on the outside of this...cuz we're fans of the kings. we kinda take for granted that we had, basically, a legendary offense with bibby, webb, and all the rest. despite all the crap that webber gets from fans, columnists, and tv analysts, guys like garnett (who have actually played against webber), realize that he is a very special talent, and that the kings had a great thing while he was here. maybe it is time to move on, but part of moving on is cherishing the good memories.

Whoa, is this true? Going after loose balls and blocking shots? I hope he keeps it up. Hope Bibby gets his shot back too, and I hope that until he does he tallys up insane assists numbers, and keeps on doing that even when he does get his shot back.

Its almost as sad as watching the T'wolves become a lottery team in the span of 3 months and seeing KG publicly weep because of that fact. Who says chemistry is overrated.

Well it seems the Kings have need of KG and KG loves the Kings sooooo....Peja + filler for KG?

Sounds like a plan to me!

Unfortunately you can't contact other team's players without it being tampering, but I would love to whisper into his ear "how would you like to come to Sacto and take over the old Chris Webber role and win your championship?".

P.S. Unfortuantely the "and filler" portion would be something a lot more than filler.

Could we all start sending KG floral bouquets? All purple flowers?

;)

And for the "and filler" portion? It's not that hard...

Minnesota trades: PF Kevin Garnett(22.3 ppg, 13.7 rpg, 5.6 apg in 38.5 minutes) Minnesota receives: C Greg Ostertag(1.6 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.5 apg in 9.6 minutes) SF Corliss Williamson(10.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.0 apg in 20.9 minutes) SF Peja Stojakovic(20.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.0 apg in 39.0 minutes) Change in team outlook: +9.5 ppg, -3.2 rpg, and -2.1 apg.
Sacramento trades: C Greg Ostertag(1.6 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.5 apg in 9.6 minutes) SF Corliss Williamson(10.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.0 apg in 20.9 minutes) SF Peja Stojakovic(20.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.0 apg in 39.0 minutes) Sacramento receives: PF Kevin Garnett(22.3 ppg, 13.7 rpg, 5.6 apg in 38.5 minutes) Change in team outlook: -9.5 ppg, +3.2 rpg, and +2.1 apg.
TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to Minnesota and Sacramento being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Minnesota and Sacramento had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement

I'd bet they'd at least want Bobby and Peja, with Thomas or someone else stashed in there too.

They'd ask for Miller first, but that would be tough.

Again, I think people underestimate KGs value -- he's an MVP, the best rebounder in the league, with Webb likely the best passing big man in the league, an annual All-Defensive team member, and oh yeah, a guy who scores 23ppg on the side. He IS the Wolves and leads them in nearly every category. If he were even out there, he would cost a mint.

Thats funny. There was a point in the game when the ball was literally at his feet and pedja didn't see it or whatever, luckily one of our guards was there to grab it. His court awareness right now is below zero.

Oh, he may have seen it. ;)

From reading the article, the author made it seem the Kings didn't deserve the 5th spot because the Wolves beat them. It centered on illogic points that Sacramento's new look is disappointing. First of all, I disagree with the team comparison with Minnesota all together. W or L, Wolves don't, AT ALL, pose a threat to the Kings because they're excluded in playoffs! Being in the 9th spot, they're supposed to be turning it up in order to have a post-season. Memphis is turning it up and, obviously, so is Denver. Both teams made needed runs quite earlier than the Wolves are currently. Houston, another streaky team going 5-5 their last 10, is more likely drop in my opinion. But going back to topic, Pippen said, "It's hard to make a run late in the season" in reference to the Wolves. I also question their likeliness of entering the playoffs. True, KJ isn't the problem. He has been consistently the leader of his team in rebounds, points, assists, and even turnovers. The reason for their recent success lies on his teammates. They are, all of a sudden, showing up. Particularly, M. Olowankandi in the Kings game. He played exceptional against the Kings; playing on his birthday may have given him confidence, putting up 7-8 FG for the Wolves.

In reference to the Kings' roles, lets just leave that to RA.
