Anyone else hear this?

I live in Chico, CA...last night on the local sports show, our sportscaster said that the Kings are close to resigning Songaila and plan to start Kenny Thomas as our starting PF. Personally I think this is pure speculation by a local sportscaster with no connections in a town without a whole lot of news to report. Regardless, I thought I'd at least post it to see if anyone else (especially those close to Sacramento) had heard anything like this.

If Kenny Thomas is our starting PF this year we are in trouble.

Its such an easy and obvious prediction that I have no idea how you would ever tell whether the guy was talking out of his ***, or actually knew something.

My only observation on that front would once agin be that we KNOW Geoff has made AT LEAST two attempts to bring in a better starting PF this offseason (Nene, Shareef). So if its back to KT now, that would a) basically mean he failed; b) be a very recent plan/development; c) be enormously premature unless Geoff has just decided to go on vacation for the rest of the summer rtaher than looking for other options.

I don't listen to the local guys here in Chico. I didn't hear anything about it. It wouldn't surprise me if we can't make a move for another starting caliber PF.

Which one was it? Sean Bennett? Eric Hodge?
Actually it was Dave Flynn. It's rare for me to listen to these local reporters, but like I said, I thought it was worth putting out there. That said, if it's true, I'd be pretty disappointed.

jerry reynolds said that he thought KT was a very capable PF because of his ability to produce consistant double-double's
i believe we need someone stronger and bigger at the pf position. our rebounding and shotblocking kills us. kenny would make a good backup. that's all.

Sounds like someone stating the obvious. As of now, Kenny is the starter with Petrie trying to re-sign Darius to back him up.

being in the west we got PFs like duncan, garnett, and amare, we need a strong PF to match up with these guys. They'll be the ones putting double doubles on us if we don't fix that. KT is more of an off the bench guy i agree. SO i know everyone heard SAR doesn't want to play in NJ (HAHA nets fans). so maybe petrie will go after him even though SAR is not really my first choice for PF.

don't count out a SAR for Thomas 3 way trade with NJ-POR-SAC just yet... the nets still have not completed the SAR trade and will have to decide by midnight tonight, when their trade exception expires... we all know that GP likes SAR...

and if the kings do get SAR, the kings may rather try and sign a defensive big man like Dale Davis or Steven hunter to backup the PF/C instead of the offensive minded Songaila...

I agree we need to get a bigger power forward but seriously, theres NOBODY that we can get that can handle duncan, garnett, or amare. I still trust Petrie with all of our front court decisions, he knows what to do.

He also tried to get Stromile Swift, but Swift didn't want to come to Sac...so that's three attempts and I'm sure he's still trying.

Existing data would suggest that the Kings will not have Amare, Garnett, Duncan, or anyone else capable of competing with players of this caliber.

The Kings will have to find ways to compensate for their obvious weaknesses. Thomas is relatively small and weak. Bibby can't guard an average point guard. Miller pouts and falls down. Peja is arguably a 6'10" creme puff. It may be a very long season.

Man, you guys just jump to conclusions way too fast.

Still plenty of off-season left, slots to be filled, and a few or more guys to be gone.

don't forget about lorenzen wright. that makes 4 quality big men Petrie went after.

On the flip side, would you rather him just try for one and be damned if it didn't work out. Besides the ones known, I would expect that others have been contacted also. Is he on plan A or plan F? That is the million dollar question that we don't know the answer on.

In other words, after we traded Bobby, there is nothing on our roster other then the "core guys" that anyone has given even a second look.

Why am I not surprised? Because, I've seen it already happen to Chicago Cubs, or rather to Cubs' GM. Like GP, Jim Hendry made some sweet moves (trades for Ramirez, signing Lee, drafting Prior) that made him look like a wizzard. Now that he has no players to trade other then core guys or highly rated prospects, Cubs started two seasons in a row without anyone manning key positions (closer and lead-off hitter). Both GM's got rid of superstars (albeit for different reasons) to "improve" their teams in the long run. Both teams are soft and injury prone. Cubs are in a freefall. Kings season is still almost three months away, but I am not holding my breath.

The only hope that I hold now, is that some other GM will save us by knocking down GP with an offer of an unhappy superstar for 2 of our "core" guys and Maloofs force GP's hand.

Feeling very piksimistic right now.

Still puts up double doubles consistently.

Can shoot better and is more clutch than the average point guard.

Passes better than any center in the league, sweet jump shot too.

With the sweetest shot in the game.

Yep. That's my take, too...

The sports director tells the talking head to say SOMETHING about the Kings. The talking head, having read Petrie's comments, says the Kings are working on re-signing Darius and, as of now, Kenny Thomas will be the starting PF.

That's like saying "VF21 is working on getting her dishes done and, as of now, her patio furniture will remain in the yard."

;)

Doesn't mean he would have unloaded Kenny, even if.

Bleh for the local Chico sports media. We don't even get newspaper articles written (ever) by a local writer on the Kings. Just recycled AP stuff. Don't think the TV stuff is much better. :)
