by the amount of time Napear and JR spent fawning over Dustin Pedroia?

Ok, so he's the AL Rookie of the Year, local product, etc. But introduce him, say hi, congratulate him on the season and get back to basketball.

From the time Pedroia came on to the time he finally left, the Kings went from being ahead or very close to 20-something down. Grant and Jerry seemed to give the score and discuss what was happening as an afterthought. Grant practically relived his childhood growing up as a Yankees fan as the game was turning.

Nothing against Pedroia. And, yes, the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is fascinating. I just didn't think that it should dominate the play by play as the Kings-Celtics game was unfolding. I tune into basketball games to watch basketball, not to hear about how much Red Sox fans hate the Yankees.

Not the end of the world.

I guess I'm not bothered by trivial things such as Grant talking baseball with a baseball player.

I don't mind him talking baseball with a baseball player. What annoyed me, I guess, is that he seemed to be doing it ad nauseum for his own amusement and enlightenment at the expense of calling the game.

BTW, any topic on this board is, whne you come right down to it, trivial.

I do not mind interviewing "local celebrities." But to go on and on about baseball and golf when they are being paid to do play-by-play and color commentary is just ridiculous. Say hello and then get back to basketball. The fawning over "celebrity" that Grant does makes me want to puke.

NBA commentators point out and even have brief discussions with courtside celebrities all the time, even at (or especially at) the All-Star Game or the Finals. There's no harm in that, in showing that movie stars, or recording artists, or athletes from other sports are in attendance and have an interest. But the commentators can't forget what they're being paid to do -- call the game -- and get caught up in celebrity-worship themselves, which is what Grant seemed to be doing. Grant makes no bones about being a football fan first and foremost, or for his love for the Yankees. That's all fine, but do it on your own time. I want to know what's going on in the game I've tuned in to watch.

I was totally annoyed. I don't think we need to have gametime guests on the broadcast unless it's like Mike Bibby or Kevin Martin. Grant and Jerry blathering on forever about the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry was stupid and boring AND disrespectful to the guys on the court trying to play the game.

I hate that Napear routinely turns a Kings TV broadcast (and more blatantly on his local radio show) into his personal New York City homer-team platform to the detriment of the Kings basketball and Sacramento area sports fans.

Grant Napear should be TERMINATED (finally!!) by MSE for this traitorous, relentless, promotion of “his” New York Yankees, “his” New York Giants, and assorted other East Coast biased views with insulting regularity. For over 20 long years Northern California sports fans have had to endure this smart-aleck twit who likely could never find a decent sports commentator gig in the highly competitive New York area market, yet survives year after year in Sactown.

Someone should maybe poll the question: "Should Grant Napear be fired by MSE?" I predict he would be in trouble if the Maloof's realized how much he is truely despised around here. The problem is the Maloof's claim they want to "get out into the Sacramento community" - but they only do occasional PR and photo-ops with no real connecting. Since we can't fire any of them, lets see about getting rid of that arrogant bozo Napear. We’ll worry about who should replace the red big head for the long-term later. Gary Gerrold could fill in nicely. Jason Ross could take over on radio. Clearly, it should be a TV broadcaster who won’t constantly shove “his” East Coast sports teams down our collective throats until we puke!!

It would have bothered me had I heard it, but I was only watching the games to see us develop our young PF/Cs, and since that doesn't seem to be a big priority this season, I lost interest and quit watching several games back. Escaping Grant's idiocy is just a coincidental fringe benefit.

Just curious. What would you do if you were being paid to coach and team in your first year and your best talent was sitting on the bench while your 19 year old Center coming off knee surgury was getting hammered by players like Garrnett night in and night out pushing his confidence to an all time low and maybe him giving up on himself as a player and or a person. You got to remember this guy is 19 years old and don't need to playing big min until he is physically and emotionaly ready.

Lets see we have group of EX NBA players and and ppl thats been around coaching for year now serving as our coaches plus and EX player as our GM.

Lets assume those guy know more about running team and develping talent than you.

Why? Why does that have to be assumed? Are we really going to have to rehash this whole "They know what they're doing because they have the job, and they wouldn't have the job if they didn't know what they were doing" argument again?

I've never had that argument but, I am sure Theus and his staff know more about Spencer Hawes, Justin Williams, and any player on the kings team than you and I will ever know. That would be pure FACT MR.

Not only is that statement not "pure FACT," but I find it highly specious, and largely impossible to prove, one way or the other.

The thing about Grant is that without the Kings he has nothing to rely on. I don't know why he would tempt fate by going off on a yankees talk in the middle of the first sellout of the year. He has no concept of what is entertaining and if the Kings weren't big ratings grabbers, I wonder if he would have a job.

LOOK i have watched years of basketball as you have I am sure. Now that being said would you trust me as a fan to presume to know more about a basketball team than a coach that has been around basketball for 30 years with the ins and outs of the game? I'll give you 20 more years of watching and I'd take a scrub journey man i.e. Mikki Moore over you or I as a coach any day of the week as would anybody else. Its easy as hell to play GM while watching reruns of M*A*S*H.

You can be as emphatic about your opinion as you want, it doesn't change the fact that your opinion is based completely on anecdotal evidence. There are no special skills required to be a GM: you don't have to have a certain IQ, you don't have to go to a special school, you don't have to have played in the league.

I am not putting you down. I am sure you think you know more than anybody. I am just saying ppl that have been around it for 30 years or longer day in and day out know more about it than you. I don't know you may habe played in the NBA. As a fan all we know is what happens on the court. We don't get to know the players in practice on the plane. We don't get the phone calls from other GM's we don't have the phone numbers to call the other GM's you can't just **** a trade or a good player. So what do you do?

None of this make the people who have the job uniquely qualified over everyone else to do the job.

Yes, and I was thinking the exact same thing. Napear's done it before in big games, plus not so big games, at the Kings and their fans expense. Beside just being in your face homer biased for NYC it appears to be a stupid, I don't give a damn habit. It's also worth remembering that the Maloof's never hired Napear or Reynold's for that matter - only retained them. They could ax Napear, but just getting rid of Angela Tsai (or demoting her) is about all the broadcaster shake up we're probably gonna get out of MSE.

(BTW, has this thread been hijacked?)

Going by your THEORY. because you watch TV you know how to build one better than the poeple at SONY.

No. Building a TV actualy requires some level of specialized knowlege unavaiulable to the bulk of the public. Basketball GMs on the contrary are kind of a joke. There may be no other (non sports related) business where a person with such responsibility could have such pathetic qualifications. Hi, I used to be really good at bouncing a ball and playing a child's game -- can I head up your multi-million dollar corporation? I had a 2.1GPA in basket weaving and everything during my nearly 3 years of post high school edumucation.

I agree with the non-relative babble bs... but I've also heard other commentators around the country... our guys are by far not that bad... deal with it, point out a better option, or turn the volume off.

Does being around the players and having access to all the GM's in the league not give them a level of specialized knowledge?? I fully understand where you come from. I don't agree with all of it but I understand. But there is no button you push that makes other GM's take your unwanted players for their young talent and draft picks. In my opinion GP made 1 mistake. That was the Webber trade. He has been trying to fill that void since that day.

I am not sure how this got into a GM discussion as I origially spoke of the development of Hawes. I would embrace a the trade of KT, Moore, SAR, Miller. But as far as Artest and Bibby go they are both gone in 2 years and right now they are talented and fun to watch. That is were you and i disagree you want those 2 gone for this and that which we would probably get an expiring and a young talent i.e. Jason Williams and Dorrel Wright. But that doesn't make us bad enough to get Beasly. So why do it when you have the talent right in front of you. Now you start talking getting rid of the afformenioed frontcourt and we are in total agreement. But like I said how do you pawn that off on other GM's around the league. I am sure GP isn't getting many calls on any of them.

If I wanted to listen to baseball and women's golf interviews I'd tune into the ESPN channel. Napear and Reynolds did it either because (1) they are bored, or (2) they thought the game would be a blowout and they wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Uhh... because you started it... You took an anecdotal remark by fnordius as license to go into your usual and predictable "Petrie is the greatest, and virtually infallible and a genius and stuff, and we should all give him unlimited benefit of the doubt because we have no right to criticize him because we're all mindless peons who don't deserve to wash his feet" rant.

Mute the TV and listen to Gary Gerold on the radio..

I used to do that years ago, but it's no longer practical - apparently due to digital TV. There's a big delay of 5 seconds or so between receiving the TV signal vs. radio signal in live Kings basketball game broadcast. However, when I'm stuck in my car listening to 'The G Man' during a Kings game it's a pure listening pleasure.
