Anthony Johnson for Darrell Armstrong?

I don't get this trade one bit. Too many questions.

Why would Dallas want AJ when they have Devin Harris and Jet?

Why would anyone trade for Darrel Armstrong?

I have no idea why you would trade for Armstrong unless it is for cap space in the future.

If this is true, I'm guessing Armstrong has a non-guaranteed deal, they can waive him and this will clear up room under the tax level so they can re-sign Fred Jones.

Actually, I guess this is a S&T deal since Armstrong is a free agent. Wow, pretty confusing why the Pacers would do this.

wow Dallas just raped Indiana on this deal. Wasn't Johnson the starting PG for Indiana for like most of last season.

Yup. Tore it up in the playoffs too. He's really come on nicely the last couple seasons as a dependable veteran guard.

Because we have Douby/Price. I assume one of them will get the back-up PG spot, and the Bonzi situation probably effected doing that.

At least we also got Rawle Marshall and Josh Powell in it. Two more athletic forwards, which seems to be our thing for this offseason.

AJ is a nice pick-up for Dallas and a hard worker, but I think the Mavs will be dissappointed in him next year. He only plays well as a starter. He generally plays poorly as a backup, and when he plays poorly.... agh. It's just not pretty.

Ooh, well that's nice... Another young swingman and now a decent young big.

So, now Indiana has at the wings: Daniels/Granger/Harrington/White/Williams/Jackson/Marhsall/Sarunas... even if one of Jackson/Sarunas/Marshall are gone, quite a filled up wing spot.

Anthony Johnson appears to be on his way to joining Austin Croshere in Dallas.

The Indiana Pacers are on the verge of finalizing a deal with the Mavericks for veteran point guard Darrell Armstrong in a sign-and-trade deal, according to people with knowledge of the situation. Mavericks forward Josh Powell is also believed to be involved in the trade. The deal is pending league approval, which could happen as early as Monday.
Johnson, who spent three seasons with the Pacers, was a steady contributor despite roles that ranged from third-string point guard to starter. He averaged 20.0 points, 5.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds while outplaying New Jersey's Jason Kidd in the Pacers' six-game, first-round playoff loss last season.
Trading Johnson, who said the team's "culture has to change" at the end of last season, avoids a point guard controversy with Jamaal Tinsley. Pacers president Larry Bird said Tinsley is "as good as you're going to get" if he is healthy in his season-ending news conference. Tinsley has battled injuries each of the past three seasons.
Sarunas Jasikevicius is also a candidate to be traded in the Pacers' crowded backcourt. Rookie James White and newly acquired Marquis Daniels can also play point guard.
The acquisition of Armstrong, a 13-year veteran, would give the Pacers a veteran voice in the locker room. He has averaged 10.1 points and 4.4 assists in his career. Powell, a rookie last season who went undrafted in 2003, averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds in 37 games last season.
This is the second offseason trade for the Pacers, who sent Croshere to Dallas for Daniels.
Shooting guard Fred Jones could be the next Pacer traded. The Toronto Star reported today that Jones is headed to the Raptors. The deal could be finalized in the next couple of days.

Yeah Powell and Rawle are both somewhat intriguing.... I figure one of them will pan out into a decent rotational player...

I wish them luck in breaking the rotation as the fourth and fifth small forwards on the Pacers roster. Or is it fifth and sixth? I'm losing track. Way to go, Larry.

You realize that you are talking about the Pacers, right? This team is hurt so often that we sign people off the street to start for us. They'll get their chance...

And Powell is not a SF.

Yeah, Powell's a smaller PF, but is a good rebounder and energy guy.

I figure, right now, the depth is like this:

Daniels/Jackson/Sarunas/White
Granger/Shawne Williams/Rawle Marshall
Harrington/Powell
JO/Foster/Harrison

1-3 of Jackson/Sarunas/Foster, I'd think will be gone, but can't see it being for Bonzi, but for Harrington to Atlanta. Why not for Bonzi? Well, all the young wings would either be on the bench or down in the NBDL for the next 3-4 years. Not sure Indy wants to do that.

Also, can't see Indy having Harrington at PF, as then you'd have a ridiculous log-jam at small foward, whether rawle marshall stays around or not: Harrington/Granger/Williams/*Marshall

It still seems like a seriously pointless trade. I know Pacers fans weren't enamored of AJ, but he at least filled a role and could start when Tinsley was injured (ie all the time). Now you're counting a spotty Lithuanian and a 45 year old for the backup/starting spot? And the throw-ins are guys who aren't going to sniff the rotation? I wouldn't be too excited if I were a Pacers fan.

There must be something involved with Atlanta... some group of these players going there: Armstrong/Marshall/Powell/Jackson/Sarunas/Foster.

If it's Jackson? Good luck to him and dealing with Atlanta's youth movement with Marvin/Joe Johnson/Childress/Josh Smith all already priorities and needing to play and devleop (aside from Johnson, who starts at SG of course).

If it's Marshall and Powell? Good luck to them too, Shelden/probably Solomon Jones/Childress/Smith/Johnson/Marvin/Zaza all already there. Even without Jones, and being in the same boat as Powell/Marshall.

Foster?
Would obviously play ahead of anyone there.

Sarunas? Well, Claxton is way better, Tyronn Lue is better, he'll be battling with Royal Ivey and likely playing little at SG.

Armstrong? Probably retires and goes back to coach with Dallas or something.

It is likely a part of the Harrington deal. The orginal station that reported it said that it was part of a larger deal.

“A lot has happened with that team since Reggie left,” Armstrong said. “I think they need that veteran leadership. My locker room presence and my spirit is something that they can use. I know how to keep guys loose.

“They have a chance to be better. ... I’m going to do what I can and adjust my game. I don’t have to score 20 points a game like I did in Orlando. I can use my experience to help the younger guys.”

Powell and Marshall were rookies last season who made the team as free agents in training camp. Both have non-guaranteed contracts and are expected to be waived by Indiana. The Pacers are trying to clear cap room to acquire free-agent forward Al Harrington.

So, even with Marshall likely gone, still loaded at the wings.
