Another mock draft:

I'm posting this only because it has an outcome that a lot of people would like. We all need something positive to look at now and then..

I'm at a loss to understand why Memphis would send the #2 to us for the #4 and Kenny Thomas. I mean, if they were sending Jaric back, they'd at least be getting OUT of ~$7M in salary. Adding KT for nothing? Huh?

They may send the #2 since KT would be a nice trade bait later in the season. also by getting the #4 the salary would be less.

The salary difference between #2 and #4 is at best $3M over the four years of the rookie deal. KT makes $8.8M. That's not a net gain.

As far as salary goes, Memphis is way under the cap. Like $20M under the cap. They don't need trading pieces because they can just absorb salary -- KT wouldn't help at all, his contract would just reduce the amount of salary they could add.

If they sent Jaric back, they'd save $6M total on Marko's contract and $3M going from the #2 to the #4. Then it would start to make sense.

I'm sorry but any trade idea that involves Kenny Thomas being the key is patently and utterly absurd...

And laughable...

And beyond my ability to comprehend...

If putting KT into that trade is what makes them agree to it, and not having to give up Hawes or JT I think I'd be willing to do it. Especially the way that mock draft worked out, I don't think it could go any better for us.

Rubio/Udrih
Kmart/Garcia
Noci/Greene/Clark
JT/Diogu
Hawes/<FA or #31>

That would be a pretty solid young core with a lot of potential for growth.

who would you want more here?

1 year of kt?

or

ricky rubio
AND
2 years of adriana lima at the seats :D

It's that part right there I simply cannot get past without rofl. Sorry, but I'm not buying/renting/or even window-shopping the idea that KT as future trade bait is enough to weight the scales in our favor and net us Ricky Rubio. I've got the darkest possible shade of homer-tinted glasses, so if I cannot find a way to rationalize it, I have to suspect it doesn't exist...

What Petrie and the Maloofs have been keeping real hush-hush is that KT lays golden eggs. So that's probably why things weren't adding up for you.

Yeah, no kidding...even for an ender, having to put up with K9 for one whole season would be torture enough. I wouldnt ever see this trade happening without the Grizz throwing in Jaric in return for K9.

Yeah, I must agree. I only posted it because I liked the outcome. By the way, I visited at least 20 different mock draft sites today and I would say that at least 17 of them have Rubio falling to number 4. Not that it means anything, except hope for us. Wouldn't it be a shocker if Rubio fell to us and Petrie traded him to, lets say the knicks for the number 8 pick and Lee. And then picked Flynn with the 8th pick. Hey! It could happen.....

Hey, this is finally the time where we can say Kenny has significant trade value. He is a pretty sizable expiring and these are pretty bad economic times with the luxury tax staying put most likely.

My take is that we've earned the right to his sizable expiring contract. We should be the ones to reap the benefits of the final "flexible piece" contract at long last dropping off our books at the end of the 2009-2010 season.

Thats actaully a pretty bad trade for us. We have watied like 4 years to get rid of Kenny's contract and now we use him in a trade to move up two spots? I dont think so.

I just think all it takes is to trade like our #31 pick, #4 pick, and next years second round pick to get it done. It shouldnt be that complicated. Or we dont even need to trade. Rubio might fall to us as we have heard the dislike of Memphis from Rubio. Even if the Kings get Thabeet, it wouldnt be bad.

It shouldn't take any of that we are saving Memphis 3 mil. They don't want Rubio or Thabeet so why not save that 3 mil and still get the player they want. If not They can pay that guy the extra 3mil and we still get Rubio at #4. No need to offer our expiring or another pick.

Ahhh, a voice of reason. I've never understood why people always want to overpay instead of underpay.

If we are the only buyers, that's true. However, Memphis can select Rubio and then try to find the best package in return for him. And if there's a player they really want in the #8 range, then they could save even more money, and maybe get another future first if they could swing a deal with New York, just for one example. Who knows who else might try to swing a trade.

It really all depends on whether they've got a player they're heart-set on. If they love Hill, or Harden (or maybe DeRozan, Evans, Flynn, Holiday, Curry) we're in good shape, because our #4 offers the most security to grab their guy. But if they're not hot after one of the more coveted guys that's going to go by #8, we might have to find a way to outbid the Knicks, at least. Maybe other teams.

...If Rubio is even the guy Petrie wants!

Not only is it a bad trade for us but it makes no sense for Memphis either. They are already under the cap so why would they take on Kenny Thomas' contract for the rest of the season?!

He would eat up their cap space and rot on the bench. The only way Memphis would do this is if they throw in a bad contract our way at which point it becomes pointless for us.

Kenny Thomas is arguably our most valuable piece this year. He represents some $9 odd million that can be used in a trade to bring in a star player, or we could just let him expire and get that $9 odd million in cap space. Trading Thomas to move up in the draft would be a very dumb move. No player in this draft is a saviour and as such, you keep your assets and don't go silly over a certain player. Rubio would be nice at a reasonable price and there is some (although small) chance that he will be there at pick 4. If he is not, there is no shortage of good PGs to choose from.

Keep Kenny for a much more srious trade that could potentially get us an impact player or alternatively let his contract finally expire and go into the FA market with some cap space to use on free agents.
