Kings fans and Kings fanettes:

Announcing...A Big Ole Board Project

wlqi.jpg

I have decided its time to go public and get serious about an ambitious project that has been in the works in the background for several months now, for and by the Kingsfans board, in honor of the team the board is here to support.

So what is the Kingsfans Sacramento Kings Wiki Project? Well...its an effort to basically record everything that has shaped this franchise and this fanbase. Every player, every coach, every major media member, front office person, events, jerseys, honors, scandals, the fight to keep the team, arena specs, rivalries, playoff runs, draft picks...whatever, you name it, and we have been in the process of trying to document it. Some of you have already been contacted about the project, I have been recruiting in smaller groups and individually. Even as I'm typing this longtime members like Bajaden (the first and most enthusiastic of the recruits who has been there from the beginning), NoBonus, King Baller, Capt. Factorial, Warhawk and others are putting together various pages of this thing, but of course there is a lot left to do.

That's where you come in. Trying to get something of this scope organized and recruited, while I chipped in 100 pages myself in August, while trying to run an All Time Draft, ended up scuttling my flash movie project, and delaying both my annual scouting reports and the production of the annual Kingsfans Kickoff video. At this rate I'm going to be looking forward to the season getting started so I can finally have a vacation. But this was never supposed to be my project. This was supposed to be a Kingfans project. We have thousands of members on this board. Some more active than others. But after 8 straight years of losing, just about anybody here is a pretty diehard fan. We have fans who have had season tickets since the team's first season in Sacramento. We have people who knew the franchise even before then, in Kansas City and Cincinatti. We have fans who have met and known various figures in Kings history. We have fans on this board from around the world. People rarely stop to think about it, but this is a pretty elite group of Kings fans here. In the entire universe of fans of the Sacramento Kings, rarely are you going to come across a group this large and with this much combined knowledge about the franchise. That's what we are trying to capture and put down for posterity here.

Sometime here in the not forever future, the worm is going to turn, and the Kings are going to be back in the spotlight. There will be a rush of new fans who barely know what came before. If Vivek succeeds in bringing the Kings to Indian fans, there are 1.5 billion people there who might not even know who Chris Webber is, let alone the rest. For all those poor naïve newbie Kings fans to be, for anybody looking to bone up on what has been, who hears a name, or a reference to an event or year, we're looking to build a Kingsfans' monument to the team and everything it has been. We have the numbers and knowledge here on this site to do it. Even just a little contribution from enough people could turn this big project into a completed project. And so I'm looking for volunteers. The more the merrier, but every single volunteer and every single page completed brings us that much closer to completing a pretty special project. If you don't feel confident in your basketball knowledge, do a bio on one the beat reporters who have covered the team, contribute a page about the $6million dollar burger scandal, do a page on Slamson, add pictures of the various jerseys, whatever. Lots of ways to contribute and bring this project a step closer to completion. Of course everybody who does contribute will get their name on the project, as well as on any pages they chipped in to.

I'm going to include a full outline of everything we are working on below, and then include several sample pages of the format we are using. The intention is to host the project on this site for the time being, in a special forum as a knowledge base/encyclopedia for Kings fans everywhere. Every day I'll post another page that has been completed by one of our members. My original estimate was that about 500 pages would be needed in the end, we're already about 30% to that number. With enough of your help, we could be well over half done by the time the season started.

Thanks ahead of time for everyone who takes some time out of their schedules to help make this happen.

Jason Hart
Born: April 29, 1978
Number: 5
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 185
Position: PG
Yrs w/Kings: 2005-07 (2 years)
How Acquired: traded (CHA/SAC) Aug. 2005 for a 2nd round pick (became Ryan Hollins)
How Departed: waived Mar. 2007

Defensive minded journeyman point guard who lacked creativity and shooting ability, Hart's career had been on the upswing before coming to Sacramento, and he was not always content with the lesser role the Kings wanted him to play. A limited minute reserve in his first season with the Kings, he only played in 13 games in his second before being waived midseason.

College & Pre Kings Career
Hart was a 4 year roleplaying starter at Syracuse who showed limited improvement through his college career, averaging 9.6pts and 5.8ast as a freshman, and 3 years later still averaging only 11.9pts 6.5ast as a senior.

He was drafted by the Bucks in the 2nd round (#49 overall) of the 2000 draft but played in only a single game for them in 2000-01, and was waived at the end of training camp for the 2001-02 season. San Antonio would pick him up, drop him, and pick him up again. The expansion Charlotte Bobcats gave him the biggest opportunity of his career in 2004-05 as they picked him up and used him as a platoon starter. After that season it was back to the bench and the struggle when Hart was traded to the Kings before the 2005-06 season.

Post Kings Career
After being waived by the Kings Hart resumed his journeyman career. The Clippers would give him a few more months of low level starter work for the remainder of the 2006-07 season, but from that point on he would play for 5 teams in the final three years of his career in smaller and smaller roles.

Post NBA Career
After his playing days were over, Hart has begun a college coaching career, starting out as a high school coach, then catching on as an assistant at Pepperdine, and most recently, USC.

Jim Gray
Position: Courtside Reporter
Years Covering Kings: 2010-2013

A veteran nationally known and sometimes controversial sideline reporter, Gray's career had seemingly been slumping when he was suddenly tapped by the Maloofs to replace the popular Kayte Christensen during the summer of 2010. Despite the Maloofs' claims that the move had been made because Gray's fame would add national prominence to the Kings, suspicions arose about the hiring when combined with the simultaneous hiring as a part time color commentator of the similarly Los Angeles based Bill Walton, who also had no previous connection with the Kings. The moves were widely suspected of being made as part of the Maloofs' preparations to move the team to Anaheim.

Gray left the Kings when the Gray/Christensen swap was reversed by new owner Vivek Ranadive in the summer of 2013.

Career Before Kings
A sports reporter with 30 years of experience beginning in the early 1980s, Gray had won 11 Emmy's while covering 8 Olympics, 24 Super Bowls and hundreds of boxing matches in addition to his extensive NBA resume, which included 18 NBA Finals. Some of his more famous interviews included an interview with Pete Rose in 1999 in which he denied his gambling, an interview with Mike Tyson in which he said he wanted to eat Lennox Lewis's children, and repeated interviews with disgraced Giants slugger Barry Bonds. His muckraking gotcha lines of questioning however earned him an unpleasant reputation, and questions about his journalistic integrity were raised by his friendship with Kobe Bryant during his sexual assault case and feud with Shaquille O'Neal. In July of 2010, shortly after being hired by the Kings, Gray attracted further controversy by being the reporter who aided LeBron James with his ill fated half hour "The Decision" show.

Career After Kings
Gray has continued to work with Showtime boxing and the Fox Network since being fired by the Kings.

Gotcha floppy. Thank you very much for the offer. I'll send you PM/Conversation about it. That stuff shouldn't be that hard, just a little time consuming. Its obviously the sort of reference stuff we'll want to include however.

I'm maintaining multiple wikis at work, and I like working on them, so I'd love to help. I don't know how much time I'll be able to put into it, but I'd definitely like to find out more. The wikis I've worked on haven't really been collaborative efforts, just side projects of mine, so there are things I don't know. Is there a QA/publishing/approval process? How do we cite sources? Etc.

There are already some finished products for you to look at and mimic. We usually posts info links at the very bottom of the page.

I said I would be posting recent work on the project every day, and then I went off and did not do it. Well its time I started.

This is bajaden's recently completed page on Tyus Edney:

220px-Tyus_Edney_%28cropped%29.jpg

Tyus Edney:
Born: February 14, 1973 in Gardena, California.
Number: 5
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 158 Lbs
Position: PG
Yr's With Kings: 1995-96, 1996-97 (two years)
How Acquired: Drafted 47th overall (second round) in the 1995 NBA draft.
How Departed: Contract expired.

Tyus came to the Kings in the same draft as Corliss Williamson, the teams first round pick that year (1995), and another player that would never suit up in the NBA, Dejan Bodiroga, the 51st pick in the second round. By most standards, Tyus had a very good rookie year, averaging 31 minutes a game and 6.1 assists a game. He was one of the fastest, if not the fastest PG in the NBA at the time, and despite his height, (5'10"), he was an excellent defender. He took over a team that was previously led by Bobby Hurley, who was a shell of his former self after his tragic accident. Apparently the Kings wern't convinced that Edney was the PG to lead them into the future, because in the following offseason they acquired Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf to compete for the starting job. When Edney failed to rise to the challenge, the handwriting was on the wall. At the end of his second year, his contract was up, and he was gone in search of greener pastures.

College and Pre Kings:
Edney was another in the long line of UCLA players that made it to the NBA. He played on the same team with Ed O'Bannon. A team that went on to win the National title in his senior year (1995). In 1992 he was named the most valuable freshman on his team. He made a step up his sophmore year by being named the MVP on the team. That same year he was also named to the 1st team all Pac 10 conference team. A title he earned again his senior year. He was also named 1st team all Pac 10 conference defensive team three years in a row. Historically, he's probably best remembered for hitting the winning shot against Missouri in the NCAA tournament. With UCLA down one point 78 to 77 and 4.8 seconds left on the clock, Edney took the in bounds pass in full stride and dribbled the full length of the court, through 4 defenders and banked in the winning shot over a 6'9"defender as the buzzer went off. Missouri, a very good defensive team, not wanting to foul, played off the in bounds pass instead of pressing or trapping. They didn't take into account Edney's blazing speed.

Post Kings Career:
Upon leaving the Kings, Edney played one year with the Boston Celtics (1997-1998). He then headed to europe to play for Zalgiris Kaunas, who he led to the 1998-1999 euroleague title. The following year (1999-2000) he played for Benetton Treviso (Italy), who lost in the Italian League finals. He signed with the Indiana Pacers for the 2000-2001 season, which would be final adventure in the NBA. From 2001 to 2009 he bounced around europe playing for such teams as, Benetton Treviso, Lottomatica Roma, Olympiacos and Climamio Bologna. He played his last professional season with Cajasol Sevilla in 2009.

Post Basketball Career:
On August 2nd, 2010, the head coach of UCLA, Ben Howland, announced that Tyus Edney had been appointed as the Director of Men's Basketball Operations. Edney is married to his wife Shewan, and they have a daughter, Kennedi, who is a world class gymnast.

I just want to commend everyone for their hard work on this ongoing project. It's an awesome idea and I'm glad KF's best are on it. I've been working on a local high school football historical database for 6 months now, so I know, first hand, how much research, fact checking, and hours of over all work go into something such as this. Can't wait to see the finished product.
