Andrew Bynum

Starter
Just thought I'd post this from an ESPN article.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-24-7/Lakers-on-the-Razor-s-Edge.html

*snip*

With his big upside and reasonable contract, Bynum is the piece that could get the Lakers real help for Kobe Bryant. The word is that Bynum could star in a package that might net the likes of Kevin Garnett, Jason Kidd, Mike Bibby, or Jermaine O'Neal. But, in part because of his potential, and in part because of organizational pride in making such a great pick, the Lakers are proving extremely reluctant to move him. Again, Kurt from Forum Blue & Gold:

It likely will take Bynum to get any of these guys done and I'm not sure Laker brass is willing to trade him for anyone. They wouldn't put him in the Kidd deal during the season, and I'm not sure that changes with Chris Mihm back next year. This was Jim Buss' guy, his pick, and I'm not sure he's available (or, maybe it would take KG).

*snip*

One Last Thing to Worry About
This whole story is about the Lakers' need to find success before Kobe Bryant slows down. But there may be a harder deadline approaching. Bryant holds the right to terminate his contract in 2009. Just checked the calendar. That's two years, Mr. Buss. Kobe Bryant wants a title. Your move.

======

Andrew Bynum ($2.1 million and a big body), Jordan Farmar ($1 million) and Kwame Brown ($9 million expiring after next season) for Mike Bibby ($13.5 million) anyone?

If the Lakers can't get any of the other big name players mentioned, maybe there's a slim chance. OK, wishful thinking on my part.

Not in a million zillion years would the Lakers do that. We would, obviously, instantly. But the blog guy here is if anything misinformed about just how much the Lakers like Bynum...not to mention Farmar. Maybe for KG, maybe. (and yes that probably means they vastly overrate him, nonetheless, he's almost untouchable).

I agree that this deal benefits the Kings all the way, no doubt. Thus the wishful thinking comment on my part, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Haha, no harm in throwing out some wishful thinking in the offseason.

But the fact that the Lakers wouldnt give up Bynum for Kidd doesnt exactly leave me very optimistic they'd do it for Bibby.

Bynum is soooooooo overhyped and it's because he is a Laker.

Regardless, it would never happen for Bibby. Jim Buss is so in love with Bynum I doubt the lakers would give him up for anyone. Odom and/or Kwame goes before Bynum does.

I know the Lakers are high on Bynum but after their pathetic end to the season I wouldn't be surprised to see them move Bynum at all. Kobe is clearly frustrated and they need more talent around him. Dealing Bynum can get them something pretty decent in return. They do need a PG, but I'm not sure they would deal Bynum in order to get Bibby.

I don't think he's overhyped. He is a seriously athletic seven footer with a developing post game, and he's only 19. He's athletic enough to keep enough with fast teams but kills them on the interior with his size and strength. He's raw right now and doesn't have much defensive savvy, but give him another couple of years and I think you're looking at a taller Al Jefferson.

And there's no way the Kings are getting him for Bibby.

you think?

Well I'm feeling generous today.... So I'll throw in KT, as well (for free, just as a sweetener <<<sourest sweetener ever, though ;) >>>

AND, with more grandiose generosity....
they can have Pot-head,

Just talk to me.... I'll be glad to throw in several more valuable flexible trading pieces!

While I think Bibby would DEFINITELY help the Lakers out, especially with their PG woes, I think the Lakers are STUPID for not dealing for J-Kidd when they had the chance, just to hold onto Bynum. There's no way J-Kidd gets moved now. Bynum will be a decent center in the league, but there's no way in hell he'll become some SUPERSTAR center in the future. It's just not going to happen. I think the ceiling for Bynum will be slightly higher than Chris Kaman.

Slightly higher than Chris Kaman?? Are you kidding me?? What are you basing this criteria on? Chris Kaman isn't anywhere near Bynum's level athletically, and the guy is only 19 years old! Bynum could very well become a superstar, did I mention he's 19??

He's got nice athleticism, but it's certainly not elite athleticism. I see him becoming a solid center marginal all-star, but not a perennial all-star.

The list of seven footers who are more athletic than Bynum is really really short. There are defintiely guys who are around 6'10" who are more athletic, but full seven footers? Especially when you factor in strength, he's up there.

Most guys who are big are either athletic or strong, but not both, so they're either good shotblockers (Camby) or good post defenders (Collins) but not both. Bynum has the potential to be both.

He's not nearly as skilled as Chris Kaman either. I just don't think the kid will put it ALL together. I think he'll be slightly better than Kaman when all is said and done.

I wouldn't say he has better athleticism than Haywood or Eddy Curry and Curry was much more advanced offensively at the stage Bynum is at. He doesn't have the elite athleticism as some of the perennial all-stars/greats at center have had and he doesn't have the fundamentals or offensive maturity of that of a Tim Duncan to make up for it. Compare him to Oden and he's way behind. I'm not doubting that Bynum could be a 20/10/2 guy, but it's definitely not a sure thing. Not by a long shot.

Bynum is already better than Chris Kaman. This is crazy.

Per 48 (since Kaman played 29 mpg, Bynum 21):

Bynum: 17.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.42 blocks
Kaman: 16.6 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.56 blocks

Kaman was a bit hurt this year though, right?

Yeah, but if you compare Bynum's season this year to Kaman's year last year he still fares pretty well, especially when you factor in age:

Per 48:
Bynum '06/'07: 17.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.42 blocks, PER 15.44

Kaman '05/'06: 17.5 points, 14.1 rebounds, 2.02 blocks, PER 15.01

Per 48 comparisons are the absolute DUMBEST ways to compare players...players that play few minutes and put in a couple stats are put on the same playing field as someone who gets 40 minutes a game? It's absurd and inaccruate.

Smills91, Bynum played 22 minutes a game, Kaman played 29 minutes a game. It's pretty similar, but enough to skew Kaman's season averages slightly ahead of Bynum because he got more time. There was more competition in the Lakers' frontcourt for time, so it's not like Bynum didn't get as much time because he's not good.

There's a right way and a wrong way to use per48 numbers, but this is one of the right ways.

This is why teams reach to draft big men. They just aren't traded very often unless they are busts like Jerome James. Neither Bynum or Kaman are going to be actively shopped and if they are their team will expect you to be taken to the cleaners to get them.

honestly i'd be down for a bibby for brown/vlad/farmar... i dont care for vlad but still... and/or do a 3 team deal that send brown to orlando for darko... and vlad anywhere... for anyone...
