Amick: De’Aaron Fox requests trade

It's not cutting your nose off to spite your face if there is legitimate competition for your asset. Even Siakam was already 30 when the Pacers acquired him, knowing they'd have to spend a bunch of money to re-sign a third-tier star without assurance that he was their "one-player-away" from reaching the Finals. Fox is just entering his prime, having turned 27 in December. There's a reason half the league has already called the Kings to inquire about his availability. 25 ppg scorers with a talent for bending defenses at the rim and a finishing ability like few others in the league is not something you sell for less than its value. You certainly don't take a crummy deal today that you can also get in the off-season when other interested franchises will come to the table knowing they can beat that crummy deal. Rental or not for some future trade partner, Fox is the kind of talent at this stage of his career that quite a few teams would surely think of as their "one-player-away". Kings fans need to shake off the hangover of Vlade "better deal yesterday" Divac. Monte absolutely should not be moving De'Aaron Fox for pennies on the dollar.

I was talking about Riley's punishment method where you get a player to loosen up by making his life miserable in the meantime. LIke they're doing with Butler. And the Suns are doing with Beal for that matter.

What's crummy though? Like I said, taking a decent deal should be the goal if there aren't any great deals. If a team is willing to gamble, great, but with half the league calling there's already a robust market it would seem.

Guessing that maybe Kings told folks internally and they asked Klutch/Fox if that would be enough for Fox to commit to an extension, they said no, and Kings backed out and so maybe Utah offered for Fox?

The backing out part here would be we wouldn't send an unprotected 27 FRP out unless Fox commits to extend.

I agree with that decision if it happened. We wouldn't be chasing Collins if not to save Fox. Team just changed coaches and is chugging along nicely, get to the offseason and make a real deal. But Fox's will-he-or-won't-he contract situation is forcing us to pushing half our chips in on a pair of 7s.

I don't have any inside info, but given that Jimmy is the one with the track record of being a complete disruption when he wants out I find it hard to believe that the Heat are the ones that raised the temperature in the room. I think the Heat are just being forced to react.

Beal is a very different matter. Clearly having Durant/Booker/Beal on the court at the same time wasn't working. So something had to give. And I think the Suns are more committed to Booker & Durant, but Beal's no trade clause complicates things, in addition to his albatross of a contract and his drop in production.

I don't think either of those situations is anything like what is currently going on with Fox.

Right now this is my preference:

Trade Fox for 3 firsts and that swap back, Sochan and salary (trying to be conservative but wanting more.

I ride out the season with Monk and Ellis as starters and Carter getting big minutes. See what those guys do with a balanced offense/defense approach.

Sochan rebounds, defends, passes, plays gritty and is only 21. Nice wing flyer, if he shoots he is a super stud.

worse case scenerio we end in the top 12 and we have our pick this year. Now you have a ton of draft picks to swing a big trade in the offseason.

What I think will happen:

Lavine, 2 picks and the swap back. Maybe one young player and a couple seconds.

I would rather trade Ingram and a couple picks for Fox. Yes we might lose Ingram but he feels a need of a wing who can space the floor.

Sure they are, and anyone who knows Pat Riley knows exactly how he's going to react. He's going to poke you around publicly and then bring matches and gas to the BBQ.

I didn't say this was going on with Fox, I'm saying that it's a method teams, as mentioned above sometimes go with. If you don't think that the Suns are passive aggressively trying to get Beal to eventually beg to waive that clause then I definitely disagree.

we don’t and have not had the forwards we needed and Monte had plenty of opportunities to do so. Instead he repeatedly (3 times) drafted guys at Fox’s position.

Like IMMEDIATELY. Man, all this Fox stuff has the "Ham and eggers" in the local media struggling with their position in the pecking order.

Really? The upcoming unrestricted free agent who averages, like, 60 games a season because of injury, doesn't really space the floor all that well, and has underachieved more frequently than Fox ever has? You are that desperate for the Kings to acquire a wing that you ship the team's best asset out for a guy like that? I'll take the Pelicans picks, but Ingram is as depreciated an asset as you can find in the NBA. That's some awful armchair GM'ing.

Ingram isn't really a floor spacer. He shot 36% from three last season on decent volume, but really he's VERY similar to DeRozan on offense. He likes to get the ball, size up the floor and go to work in the midrange. The offense definitely doesn't need two of those players.

Less than 25% of Ingram's attempts came from long range last season. Here's his shot chart:

I think they asked Fox to commit to an extension if they moved their 27 FRP for Collins and he said no. So deal fell through and Utah probably said well how about Collins, Kessler, Sexton, Flip and a bunch of picks for Fox? Basically the reverse Ainge deal.

Something like that, the intention there would be that is your base offer and you tell Paul to go beat it elsewhere where Fox wants to go. And you can bet Klutch is doing that but they also went public so they could make our FO look bad and drive down the asking price.

My imagination of what could have happened here.

Yeah, you ask for the moon, and yeah, even some of their young talent is in a rough spot contractually. I like Vassell but I'm not sure about paying someone 25 million per on a long term deal right out of the gate like that. Keldon fills a position of need, probably improves statistically with more time, and has a very affordable and short deal. The Kings could then potentially set themselves up for a seamless re-tooling in a few years.

If Sochan didn't leech value from the rest of the package sure, but if it came down to another pick vs. Sochan Monte might want to take the pick. If Sochan didn't have his contract up at the same time as Murray it would make things easier. Sochan could very easily be just as much a rental as Fox is for another team.

They'll obviously need a DDR replacement in a couple seasons, but I'm assuming you're talking about re-tooling around Domas, Monk, and Murray and possibly Ellis and/or Carter. If so, I can squint and see the logic. But I don't see a full rebuild being something Vivek would accept, so the Kings are locked into trying to also win now.

If Sochan didn't have his contract up at the same time as Murray it would make things easier. Sochan could very easily be just as much a rental as Fox is for another team.

I think if you can trade this extra pick with Huerter and Lyles for a better than Sochan right now guy you do. I am not sure I wouldn't take Sochan today as defensive reinforcement up front over a pick 3-4 years from now though.
