Argh, that show gets annoying once the hideously bad folks get weeded out in the beginning.
My wife watches it. I only enjoy some of the first shows because even I can sing better than they do, and it's like watching COPS - a train wreck in the making.
It will probably be the highlight of winter TV given the writer's strike. Unfortunately the strike also means they will probably find some way to grind out extra episodes to make up for lack of programming. I think the show works best when they focus on the talent and not all the extra crap - bad singers, backstories, host antics, etc. Of course people tune in just for those things so any extra episodes will consist entirely of that fluff.
Yeah, but that is all they do. And frankly I am not all that interested in listening to all that garbage over and over. I want to be entertained. Watching people sing in that show isn't entertaining to me. Watching some of the introductory idiots that get up there, for a little while, can be.
The fact that it can be more of a popularity contest than a true competition is also a big negative. Good singers get voted off, lousy ones stay. Kinda like the NBA All-Star voting. The nature of it turns me off.

I hope that American Idol will be better than it was last year. Although I liked Melinda Doolittle from last year, I didn't really see a whole lot of talent.

I know one significant change they've already announced is they're cutting back on the "hero worship" of the superstars that check in for a week to "help" the kids. They received a lot of complaints about it becoming too much about a bunch of recording artists and nowhere near enough about the hopefuls themselves.

I know some may not agree with this, but my hope beyond hope was/is that one who is known as "The King of Pop" would show up. That has not happened yet.

No problem, obviously. My wife watches it religiously. Some of the singers are truly awesome singers and performers. Problem is there is way too much other stuff for me to even consider watching on a regular basis.
Hence (one of) the reason(s) we have multiple Dish tuners and TV's hooked up. Last year (before we moved) we only had one and I missed many a Kings game because of it.
So I made sure to log onto CNN and let her know that I already knew who stayed and went before the show aired in CA. Not that I told her "who", just that I knew.

You should try watching "Don't forget the Lyrics" --it also has that kind of entertainment value.
There are occasionally some really knock me off my feet singers, but it's generally either the "i'm pretty sure I can sing better" or average type.
Well that's good. A lot of that hero worship seems manufactured to begin with - its obvious that all the contestants have different tastes and to see them all fawning over artists that half of them probably don't even like is tiresome. I'd be fine if they did away with the celebrity guests entirely.
Did you or anyone else watch The Next Great American Band, I know I haven't been around as much so maybe I just missed the thread on it. I thought it sucked because they forced the AI format onto a show featuring mostly working artists with complete catalogs of original material. But it also reminded me that the AI formula has gotten really stale, I'd love it if we could break away from the theme nights once and for all and let each of the singers perform in the element that best suits them. The producers seem to believe that every time they get a major act to associate itself with the show it brings new credibility to the show. In reality I think it takes credibility away from the performers, or at least shifts the focus of the show away from the contestants and onto the star of the week and the AI entity as a whole. That has been my biggest gripe since about the 3rd or 4th season. I still think the first season with its laughable production budget was their finest hour. The removal of "hero worship" is a good first step towards getting things back on track.
Warhawk - I thought the idiots were a lot more fun to watch when the show first started. Nowadays those idiots know well enough that they can't sing and are just trying to get on tv any way they can - dress obnoxiously, sing badly and then yell at/flip off Simon. It was more fun when they sincerely thought they had talent only to have their dreams crushed. I don't know if that's because I'm a cold hearted evil bastard or because the three years I spent in LA made me detest famewhoring on a whole new level, but I suspect its a little of both.
