Alonzo Mourning

Just a quick thought on the impending free agency of 'Zo (according to hoopshype.com this is the last year of his contract with Miami)

Is there any reason why the Kings wouldnt' place a cursory call into Mourning to gauge his interest in coming to the team? Obviously, past his prime and wouldn't play more than 20 minutes a night (which is what he averaged this year) but with what he does provide it could seriously help the kings in the playoffs. When you think about our most glaring weakness, it's the lack of any sort of shot blocker in the middle. How many of those Parker/Ginobili layups in Game 5 would have been blocked/altered had we had Zo back there?

I realize this is probably a pipe dream (since it looks like he'll wrap up in Miami with a contender in a place he loves) but will we at least make the call? I'd be willing to offer him a contract in the 3 year/16 million dollar range (approximate MLE) if I were the owner.

Any thoughts are welcome.

I'd make the call. In fact, I'd be starting to preprogram my phone to make a whole BUNCH of calls come July 1.

I'd think you'd almost have to make the call.

you figure he wouldn't get anything close to his last contract (4 years/22 mllion) since he is older now......I don't know, I couldn't realistically see him getting more than the MLE.

It will be interesting to see something!

Sure you have to call unless your team is stacked at the 5... That being siad Zo will have a lot of offers many of which may be over and above the value of a 20 min a night guy. At this stage Zo is MOST likely to be concerned with either a LONG contract that will cary him past his viablity or playing for a team that is championship material. don't see the Spurs making an offer and doubt Detroit will either whick leavesthe second ier teams Dallas and Miami, more liekly and ultimalty we can expect some interst form the also rans like Clevland, LA2 and Sac... be interesting to see how this goes.

Another perennial malcontent on the Kings? No thanks. Also, there would be a 100% chance of him trying to strong arm Artest and become the locker room leader, a role he is not suited for.

Of course you want him if you can get him. But you really can't -- all indications have been that he is planning on finishing his career in Miami.

There is NO doubt you would seriously look at someone like Mourning but whether we can sign him or not is another thing.

As Brick said, all indications have been that he wants to finish his career in Miami.

Someone like Mourning would be a sensational signing for us. He would instantly strengthen our front court.

How old is Mourning exactly. If he is like 36+ i would vote against signing him simply because he is too old. He is a great shotblocker and a plus being in Sac means that he gets to see Vince Carter only two times in the season instead of 4. I wouldnt mind but chances are he will stay in Miami

Too old? I'd take Matumbo and he is like 52 and he's still a great shotblocker!
Actually, Matumbo doesn't even know how old he is. Nobody knows exactly when he was born. My sister told me that. Is that right And1?

I think it's almost a given that he stays in Miami.

That being said, I think you have to make the call if you're the kings. His salary this year in Miami was just 1.6 million. I would honestly be willing to give him a 3 year/15 million contract to bring him in. (of course, it's easier for me to spend the maloof's money than my own!!!)

That's true. It remember watchign some special half time feature about him, where he is from, and how they don't celebrate birthdays or something weird re: bdays. That being said.. NO on Mourning, and YES on Mutumbo.
