A Team In Search Of… “It”

A Team In Search Of… “It”

If anyone knows where “it” is, please let the Kings know.

Now.

Phone, email, write a letter – drive over there if you have to. Take a bus. Just don’t waste any more time.

Whatever “it” is, this is a group that sorely needs it. Call it heart, toughness, chemistry, consistency – or as Rick Adelman referred to “it” as fire – makes no difference. Without “it”, this team is headed for an early playoff exit. Assuming they still get there.

That special something is missing: “it”… where could it be?

The three new guys were supposed to provide a puckish attitude. Somebody forgot to tell the T’Wolves. They never got the memo. They pushed the Kings around so easily it was as if they were plowing through a marshmallow factory.

“We were way too soft,” Corliss Williamson groused. “And that’s not supposed to happen, especially on our home court.”

Amen, brother. Marshpillows.

When you shoot 38.4% for the game, you can’t afford to give up easy baskets. While this team has never been known for defense, maybe it’s time they started thinking about some. Could be a trend.

And what’s happened to the shooters? Peja Stojakovic and Mike Bibby only took 3 shots apiece in the 4th quarter, although for Bibby that might have been a good thing, since he finished just 7-21.

When things don’t go your way, it’s best to whine and coax out a few technicals. Helps to cover up the deficiencies. But certainly not the look of a team with “it”.

Up and down. Up and down.

The ride doesn’t get any more unpredictable than this. One night – say, the Philly game, for instance – the Kings look like they’ve got it all figured out. The collective light bulbs come on. Then suddenly, they morph into a high school team, embarrassed by the likes of a Golden State.

Okay, cheap shot. The Warriors are a young and vastly improved team, playing good basketball. And if the Kings aren’t careful, they won’t be retaining their claim as the cream of the Northern California crop. Imagine that.

There was a time when the Kings had plenty of “it”. Back in the day. Occasionally they still find themselves with “it”. But they just can’t seem to hang on – might be too greasy a commodity this year.

Maybe the guys are waiting for Brad Miller or Bobby Jackson to show up healthy and pass some “it” around the locker room. Everybody gets a full spritz and all is right with the world again. Just like those teams we vaguely remember.

So they await the arrival of the Sonics, who might still be licking wounds from their recent loss to the Warriors – and perfectly ripe. A team to be “had”, so to speak. A springboard into the post-season.

But unless the Kings can acquire “it”, a favorable outcome shouldn’t be expected.

IT lives in the sewwers and eats children... not sure the Kings need IT on their team.
Hahaha!!! :D

Nice article though. Kings do need to get more consistency or the summer will be long.

It=Desire

This group of guys (especially starting 5) just doesn't have it anymore:(
It reminds me of when C-Webb went down vs. Dallas in the playoffs a couple years ago. We were still the better team but we seemed to pack it in beacause we weren't good enough to win it all. What happened to personal pride and competitiveness? Sure we lost to L.A. in WCF but Mike created a name for himself. You don't have to win a championship to have a succesful year. Only one team can go all the way! Nobody is expecting these guys to win it all but it would be nice if they acted like they were trying! Our guys just don't seem to care and that's SAD! Just had to get this off my chest!

I hope the "it" magically shows up at the start of the playoffs. We've had a string of great regular seasons and our highlight of the playoffs is getting to the WCF once.

If the guys are coasting because they think the regular season is meaningless and they can turn it on in the playoffs and they actually do it, I'll be on board...if this is really all they've got....um, it could be a problem.

In reality we have been missing IT since the middle of last year. During that time we have been too inconsistant.

wrong.

IT is not what everybody thinks IT is. its not some sort of awesome display of behind the back passes, fast breaking dunks, or hail mary three pointers. just because the kings as a team have not been as cohesive as they were a coupla years ago doesnt mean they havent been a team worthy to be placed among the elite, and in contention. when webber was still a part of the team, IT was present. i'm gonna call "IT" the swagger for right now, cuz that's what we had. despite the inconsistencies this season, the kings swagger was definitely present while webb was still here. ya could see it in webber's eyes. and it was contagious. ya could see it in bibby's eyes, and in miller's, and in mobley's, and on down the line. and now that webb's gone, its up to bibby and peja to regain that swagger, and instill it in their teammates. people can say what they want about the king being "soft" or weak defensively, but the key to the kings success these 6 seasons past has been their collective swagger, their attitude of putting the team first while fighting thru the injuries. they dont look like a team right now, and thats why they are so wildly inconsistent.

How is it wrong since IT is not defined. What makes your definition of IT valid and others wrong. I hate when people try to come off with a superior attitude. People have different opinoins on what IT is and that does not make it right or wrong.

gotta say I agree with you 100%. I read the original post, and thought to myself that we didn't just lose "IT", we traded "IT" with Webb. Like Webb or not, he was a big piece of what made this team work. He was the difference between the Kings being a mediocre team and a team that had the potential to be great. Not just because of the way he plays, but the effect he had on this team, and the way he believed in this team and made them believe in themselves. We're a different team now, and we're missing an identity. We will find it, but I don't know if it will happen this season.

^I don't know if this "IT" have anything to do with Webb. But I thought we were always finding an identity ever since this season started (before any trade happen)...we still haven't found it and the trade & injuries makes it much tougher.

Oh geez.

Nobody was coming "off with a superior attitude." People agree and disagree with each other all the time. It's kind of why message boards exist. Padrino thinks your interpretation is wrong, someone else might think his is wrong.

IMHO it's getting way too sensitive around here...

Gotta agree. Maybe tonight they'll start to get some of that swagger back.

GO KINGS!!!!!

George Carlin used to perform a whole routine on "it".

I just hope the Kings can get with it. But if they don't, then it is what it is.
