A new week and other news, rumors, etc.

The Sacramento agreement is binding and will be the only deal on the table once the BOG votes the move down. This way the NBA doesn't have to actually "reject" the Hansen offer and use that binding agreement they have from Hansen on an expansion team, which is why I assume there have been delays. The Hansen agreement has to be changed in numerous areas to accommodate expansion rather than the Kings.

The NBA probably wants to announce both at once, then Stern walks out as the best Commish the NBA has ever seen. KJ walks out as the best Mayor Sac has ever had, and Hansen walks out as the savior of Seattle, and the Seattle fans say "they didn't want the Kings anyway". Works for everyone and all involved are saviors of their respected areas.

I really like this Gary. :)

and that's what im afraid of

I don't think it's worth being afraid of. One of the keys is how broke they are and desperate for cash. As distasteful as it may be for them to sell to sac if the league has made it clear they aren't moving, they will sell and sooner than later

Though the league can and most likely will put strong pressure on the maloofs to accept a deal with sac if Seattle is rejected, what you describe is not the official process. There is no automatic acceptance of the sac deal. Still most likely ends up with us in that case but the maloofs could still be there usual selves and make it a hassle

The Maloofs will NOT be a factor. David Stern has said so quite plainly several times. Of all the things we Kings fans have to worry about, this simply isn't one of them. The Maloofs have a binding agreement with Seattle. They also have a BINDING (according to Stern) back-up offer from Sacramento. If the first agreement is withdrawn, which is what definitely will happen in the event the relocation is voted down, then the back-up offer becomes binding. That's why the Maloofs pushed for it to be finalized.

The Brothers Maloof do not want this to drag out any longer. They want their money and the only way they get it in a prompt manner is by playing nice with the NBA.

From what I understood the Maloofs have a binding agreement with Sacramento as the "backup offer" where they get the same amount of money as if they would with the Hansen deal. I assume once the BOG rejects the move that Seattle's deal is voided (since it was contingent on the move happening) and Sacramento's is the only one left, and since it's "binding" supposedly the Maloofs will have to take it. If I am missing something please correct me, because that's what I have been thinking was going on.

I don't think the delay is to get expansion lined up for Seattle. I think it is what the NBA has said it is, to allow for any undotted "i"s and uncrossed "t"s to be dotted and crossed on the Sacramento side. I think the expansion question really isn't going to be addressed in detail immediately. I hope it is, but I doubt they do that before they get this situation sorted out first.

I think they realize that the Maloofs have been lousy owners and are giving Sacramento every chance to make sure there is no technicality to reject the counteroffer. I think they are doing this to send a message to owners that they will not look too kindly on trying to ship a team out of a town that has supported it so well (not giving them a chance to bid, trying to move to behind the city's back, etc.). They know we have only had a few months to put all this together (team purchase, arena deal, etc.).

I think that by handling the Kings situation first they will then be free to dig into expansion later. I think they will throw Seattle a bone and say that it is being considered, but I don't think they will have a formal "offer" of an expansion team to give to Seattle at this time. Maybe next year? Expansion would be a serious item to address on such short notice and not one to be taken lightly.

It's binding in the sense that should the Seattle group be rejected, the sac group couldn't say let's start negotiations at $250M. According to the latest info, the maloofs haven't accepted the sac groups offer as a backup but if it offers the same net value, they will accept it regardless of if they like it. There just isn't anything in the league rules that makes it an automatic approval if Seattle is denied.

Like vf21 said above, it's in all likelihood a non issue as if the value is equal the maloofs will sell to sac. Just want to make sure we aren't spreading misinformation like some of the pathetic Seattle fans.

Glad this is almost over. While the upcoming meeting is only going to result in recommendations on how to vote on the relocation deal, one should figure that rumors will shortly hit the circuit on which way certain individuals should end up voting. I am both nervous and excited for the next few weeks of NBA action taking place off of the hardwood floors...

I want to congraulate the people of Sacramento on their tough battle to keep the Kings. But sources inside say Kings are staying just not official until Monday. Seattle will get an expansion team. Both ways are good for the League. But I am happy for everyone and especially CD and Mike and all the good people fighting on this board. Congrats! You won!

[h=2]NBA Relocation/Finance Committee to meet Monday on fate of Kings[/h]Posted by Bob Condotta

An NBA spokesperson said this morning that the league’s Relocation/Finance Committee will meet Monday via teleconference, at which time it is expected to make its recommendation on the fate of the Sacramento Kings.
League by-laws require a grace period of seven business days from the time of the recommendation to the final, binding vote by the NBA’s Board of Governors. So that means the earliest the vote could happen is May 8 (but they don’t have to vote that day — by-laws say the vote has to happen no earlier than 7 and no later than 30 days after a recommendation).
Here is our story for the Thursday paper laying out the process ahead (though written before the news of this morning that a date had been set for the next committee meeting).
The members of the Relocation/Finance committee are: Peter Holt, Spurs (chairman of the Board of Governors), Clay Bennett (Thunder), James Dolan (Knicks), Herb Simon (Pacers), Larry Tanenbaum (Raptors), Glen Taylor (Timberwolves), Jeanie Buss (Lakers), Robert Sarver(Suns), Greg Miller (Jazz), Wyc Grousbeck (Celtics), Ted Leonsis (Wizards) and Micky Arison(Heat).

Haven't won anything yet. While the indications are that things are leaning our way, I am NOT going to be assuming anything at this point. And the board does not necessarily have to vote the way the committee recommends. And we don't know what the committee has recommended yet. So let's not start lighting up any cigars until something official happens. I don't want to look like those Seattle trolls we all hate. And by trolls, I mean the 5% or so of Sonics fans that have been real jerks through this process instead of being respectful and honest. There is still a ways to go even if we think we know how this might turn out.

The word down here is that the deal is done. I guess i will just start smoking my cigar and when your ready, you just open your packet and start puffing. Like CD said get ready to celebrate. But I will keep it low key until official word.

Yes. This and nothing more or less. Totally agreed. Perfecto! Good analysis. It keeps us grounded in truth. Nice note. It is supported by the info coming from the NBA/Stern and not sources, connections, etc. Fact based and logical.

If we could keep focused on this, we would not be going nuts following every rumor and half truth and then expanding on those rumors and half truths. For those wanting advice on how to keep sane (a legal term, BTW) through this process, keep focused on this. There is nothing more than the NBA being sure that the property in Sacramento can be acquired and that the money "pledged" at this point of the 30 or so potential owners is real. This is time consuming as to the vetting of the potential owners. For example, 20+ people promised $1 mil or more. Now time has to be spent so that these pledges can be confirmed as reality.

Now to drift into more I will say that there WILL be a winner or loser in this as I don't believe for a second that there is a "wink, wink" deal with Seattle that they will get an expansion team. If the NBA considers expansion, they will look to Seattle as a point of logic but remember, Seattle just lost a team for good reason. Has the city changed so much in a few short years? The Seattle fans lost a great team because of lack of governmental support and we all know what that is like. Unless that governmental attitude has changed, they aren't a shoe in for anything in the future.

Do you have a specific source? Just wondering because I'm going insane...

If I'm not mistaken, it's the same architect, Ellerbe Becket, as Barclays Center. The renderings look as though they took the Barclays Center concept and made a few tweaks.

I thought the same thing. And picked a good one to build on because the sight lines there are the best in the league.

And yes Ellerbe Beckett was acquired by AECOM a few years ago.

Should I smoke one of those $20 cigars I have in the humi for a special occasion or do I drive up to Canada for a Cuban?

Well to me, you go for the best! If you got a passport head north. If not come down to Sacramento (It will be lively there) I mean im excited even though it is not official yet. Since I am a half cup full type guy, I will be partying quietly until the official result. Then I wil drive up to sacramento and really party with the people. Im sure Carmichael Dave will have a place he will be at and I will come up when he announces where he will be at.

Interior seems similar to Barclay Center, except for the ceiling and side windows which seem like the arena in Indy, and the exterior wall of glass and shape seems similar to Sprint Center in KC. All designed by Beckett. It's like we're getting his greatest hits package.

I hate the wait.. I like the names on the committee and I like our chances. Again all these little delays seem to be signs of the NBA giving Sac the best chance possible to get their ducks lined up.

Gavin Maloof tells me he & brothers will not be allowed to listen in on NBA relocation/finance committee conference call for recommendation.

Awww.... hahahahahaha

Funny, but not surprising. There's zero upside to giving the Maloofs access to the decision making process. And since when it is concluded, the recommendation made and the sale finalized (to either the Seattle or Sacramento group) then they will be EX-owners so there's absolutely no reason for them to have any info on how and why the decision was made by the committee and BOG.

Bankers Life Fieldhouse here in Indianapolis has been the template for most of Beckett's new arena designs. The Barclay & Sprint Centers along with the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte were taken from the template here in Indy. Looking at the renderings, I can see many elements of both our Beckett venues (Bankers Life & Lucas Oil Stadium). I know the windows are a call to BLF here, but there are other things in the renderings that point directly to Lucas Oil Stadium.

I don't think that the wait has to do with Sacramento. I have a feeling that the wait has to do with Seattle working with the league to get that agreement modified for an expansion team rather than the Kings. I assume they are going to report the news at the same time because they don't want anything negative to come out if the Sac news came first and there wasn't anything concrete with Seattle. So I figure that they are just waiting until both are done and they'll announce them both at the same time. I feel that they wanted to get this reported before the "recommendation date" so that they don't even have to announce that at all.

Maybe, maybe not. The NBA can't/wont make expansion an official topic until after the new TV deal is done. I am not sure of any legal ramifications but they may well not be able or willing to discuss any official or unofficial plans or offers for expansion. This could end oddly with questions hanging: eg Seattle pulls offer Sac gets team and vague comments of "good luck next time" come from the NBA. Meanwhile rumors of expansion whirl and Hansen works on his arena deal.
