3 Point Shooting Since Webber Trade.

I noticed on this last road trip it was as if the kings were falling in love with the 3 point shot.

dallas 24 att 9 made 37%
philly 19 att 6 made 31%
washington 22 att 10 made 45%
charlotte 16 att 4 made 25%
orlando 20 att 6 made 30%
miami 12 att 2 made 16%

I know that the kings have been falling behind in games, but they are really jacking up the 3's especially mike and cat.

todays game they only shot 11 and made 6 57%

I like the way the players did not just jack up 3's in todays game they were almost all taken in the flow of the game instead.

The kings are a good 3 point shooting team when it comes off of a pass, not as good when they take it themselves.

Also I think having a couple of extra players who are willing to go into the lane will hopefully increase the good 3 point shots.

Ok, so 113 in the first 6 games = 19/gm

On the year 998 in 60 games, so 16.5/gm or so.

There is a bit of a jump there, but not really a surprise, especially with Brad out recently and the bulk of your offense being carried by a trio of perimeter players, no?

Great point, especially Peja. He seems to do better with the quick release 3 when the team has done a good job of getting him open. What's interesting is this is the one point that I think the announcers made that didn't seem like utter mindless junk. Sometimes the announcers crack me up! For example, one of them made the point very early on that the pistons may be attacking the basket. Let's see ... I mean lets think about this ... our star center is injured and our backup is useless (so out of shape its not even funny) ... boy I wonder how they drew the conclusion that the Pistons may want to attack the basket!? :)

Of course the Piston's efforts proved futile ... oh yea gotta love them kings!!!!

When they get to play with the full compliment of front court players (which didn't happen at all on the road trip) the attempts will go back down to 16 or so per game, maybe even lower.

Exactly. Peja is an awesome weapon when the team sets him up. When Peja is on the Kings are at their most potent, but Peja is only really on when the team is passing, and more importantly, passing to him. That was one of the big problems with Webber leaving Peja out of the offense. Peja would have made a lot more of those outside shots than Webber did.

Practically everyone shoots the three better when set up. That's why FG% on players like Kobe or AI are deceiving, as these people are volume shooters who draw the defenses' attention. No one is going to be surprised if a shot comes their way if they have the ball. But if the ball is kicked out or swung around to an open player on the perimeter, it may come as a surprise. That's just fact, there's hardly any getting around of it.

The notion that Webber was intentionally leaving Peja out of the offense is still pretty unsubstantiated to me. The last game I saw them play together before the trade I saw Webber constantly feeding Peja. I think some of the reason Peja wasn't getting the ball is that he a) wasn't moving as much and b) was shooting a pretty sub-par percentage this year...which continued today even without Webber not passing him the ball or c) since cuttino joined the team, he has been forcing a TON of shots..and taking a lot of shots away from Peja.

And Peja wouldn't get the same type of shots because he can't play the high-post. More Peja shots would probably amount to a lot more one-on-one fade-away three pointers like we saw a lot of today. I like Peja, I think he is a very good player, but he needs to realize that he is not much of a one-on-one player. His shots need to come off the spot-up or off of a screen (or a cut to the basket which I haven't seen nearly as much of this year) or maybe off of one dribble to create some space.

As for the increase in 3pointers, that trend will probably continue. Between Bibby, Mobley and Peja we have three people who need to get their attempts from three in every game. With not much of a post game to speak of, I would expect to see these numbers to continue or even increase as the season wears on. In fact, this is one of the ways we can probably still compete (as in comepete with the best teams in the league). The three pointer is a great equalizer if you can hit them at a reasonable percentage.
