It's just going to be an endless cycle of teams trading future seconds for current seconds because they traded all their seconds for a half season rental of an eighth man.

Yeah but the real question is how far away are they and do they have enough internal improvement to make the jump? Tough call when your best young pieces are kind of ready now and in that 22-25 range. I personally felt it mandatory for Monte to find another player that can get you 20 per game. Now there's no question how mandatory that might be with these super teams having assembled. The games without Fox should have sounded the alarms in the Kings FO.

It's just reality, the Kings aren't guaranteed space this summer without sacrifice, and the Huerter trade hampered their ability to offer picks. Still a good deal no matter how you put it though. If it were me, I'm still all in on attaching that 1st to Holmes on draft night and seeing if you can cut some of that Holmes deal. The complete thud Monte heard from other GM's when bringing up Holmes' name probably means even that might not be doable. Monte learned a lesson unless last deadline he heard the same thud. If so oh well but if he thought of Holmes was solid backup, no, other teams around you will tell you about value. No team is paying MLE+ money on a backup C.

I can't ever fully shake the memory of the 2014 Oakland A's who had a massive lead by the midpoint of the season, 6 All-Stars, and an insane run differential of like +150 or something. They went all-in trading Cespedes for a half season rental of ace pitcher Jon Lester and completely nosedived down the standings and eventually lost the WIld Card game. The big lesson in that fiasco is that team chemistry actually counts for a lot.

I think this version of the Kings just isn't at the point where they can afford to burn all of their assets and go all-in. We've got some great players who fit well together and we probably need to see them in the playoffs at least once before fully committing to the next move, whatever that turns out to be.

The Kings already have the most players with 30+ games.

Vanderbilt is pretty close to a 5 position defender though. Look, if guard defense were all that important the Kings wouldn't be in the 3rd slot, haha. The NBA is an arms race and the one with the most arms is probably going to win. The Celtics made a crucial game 7 mistake to go all D and it cost them a ring. Firepower it is. Lets hope chemistry still matters though because the Lakers look entirely different today than yesterday.

Yep. The Raptors let their core develop for a good half a decade before they decided to go all in on Kawhi Leonard. There's something to be said for letting things develop naturally.
 
I was hoping for another wing or center that could help defensively. There may still be someone on the buyout market. And maybe Holmes plays better now that he knows nobody wants him.

I’m not mad. We didn’t have many assets that would be that attractive. I was hoping we’d get lucky.
 
Baring a late season revival, the Kings need to just eat the $ and buyout Holmes with the stretch provision. The roster needs some new blood at the backup 5, someone capable of bringing big energy.

I get what you are saying, but we have assets on this roster we don't utilize that could've got us players we could've. We could've easily landed Thybulle and Bamba given what they were traded for. Neither guy is a major asset and wouldn't require us to burn major assets in return. They would've fit well here and filled roles we needed them to. To make no moves at all is just odd.

I'm not saying all in, but their were a few trades we absolutely could have been in on that cost next to nothing and help this szn

Those other teams need to want to trade with us though. It's not an either or scenario. Maybe Charlotte didn't want the picks we'd have been able to throw in and the Sixers didn't want a deal if McDaniels wasn't involved. There are moving parts beyond just switching the team names on trade packages.
 
Well, it would have been nice to pick up Hartenstein or Plumlee or even Bamba, but I'm guessing Monte McNair just didn't like the price he'd have to pay to join in on silly season. Hopefully he can grab a bargain big on the buyout market, which is sure to get flooded with the kind of bench talent that was literally just going for multiple second-rounders. Regardless, McNair didn't do anything stupid, and considering the amount of lols and wuts in this thread over the price that eighth, ninth, and tenth guys were drawing, I'd say I'm ultimately happy that our GM kept his powder dry, disappointing though it is that the Kings weren't able to bolster their depth.
 
It's funny to me that the Kings used to be living in the shanty town and couldn't/didn't make any moves at the deadline, now they are living in a nice suburb yet we are still jealous of that couple pieces of water-soaked biscuits that the bad teams in a shanty town with no lake view (ha!) are getting.

EVERY NIGHT. That's the goal. A player getting 6-10 points on Monday, 7-15 on Tuesday, 20-30 on Thursday, is system ball and far to sparsed out unless you have a literally All star level of depth. The Kings need another player to create outside of their system as Fox does. Fox so far is the only player on the roster that shows that aptitude although TD/Monk can at times get the job done. I brought it up before. The Kings are super unselfish but that shot distribution chart is a bit scary. Historically teams with that type of balance usually have to be ELITE defensively to go anywhere. The mid 2000's Pistons are the comp

I'm only worried about the Suns being the next Warriors, and the Lakers next year to an extent.

Kyrie is going to leave the Mavs a smoldering husk just like the last two franchises he was with. It's a move that reeks of desperation and I'd rather do nothing at the deadline than do what they did.

Portland got actively worse and Minny is still the same group of idiots and Memphis can't stop running their mouths and causing trouble to the tune of a nosedive and all good vibes with that group being ruined.

As far as I'm concerned, the only superteam made this deadline was the Suns.

When they said "buyout" I was thinking stretch provision. Is that still a thing? If it is, it has to be on the table. Yeah, a buyout just saves Vivek money.
