Two sources told ESPN.com the Maloofs have informed their fellow owners that if their deal to sell and relocate the Kings to Seattle is not approved by league owners next week, they will not sell the team to a Sacramento-based group that promises to keep the Kings in Sacramento.

Instead, the cash-strapped Maloofs have made a "backup" agreement with the Hansen-Ballmer group to sell them 20 percent of the team for $125 million to allow the Maloofs to continue to operate the franchise.

okay.

Fine by me, if they build a new arena and of course nobody will ever let the Maloofs attend a game without a security escort. The NBA needs to be VERY CLEAR to the Maloofs that they will NEVER move this franchise from Sacramento.

Personally, I believe that the report is a lie. Why? Because why own a team that you can't go to the games? Nobody wants the Maloofs to step foot in Sacramento let alone in STA.

Also, If this is the case then the NBA needs to enact the "best for the NBA rule". Obviously the Maloofs along with their new buttboy Hansen have gone nuts.

I don't see how this would make any difference. The sale would still have to be approved by the NBA as well as them still wanted to relocate. None of this changes the fact that Sacramento has done everything right according to the NBA to keep their team in Sacramento. This is just them trying to find another back-handed way to sell the team and move them out of town. The BOG should have no problem seeing this.

If the vibe of the Hansen/Ballmer group and the Maloofs trying to strong arm the NBA wasn't apparent before, this completely solidifies it

It's in the best interest of the league to get these clowns (Including Hansen) out of the NBA for good. I am sure the other owners will see it this way. They are constantly doing everything the wrong way.

Hanson really wants an expansion team now and is willing to pay the Maloofs to go along with him.
Actually the opposite. Hansen has declared war on the NBA with the Maloofs and is trying to strong arm the league into moving the Kings. the KNOW the league will never approve the minority sale either. The sad commentary is it looks like the Maloofs have bought into Hansen's promises of a bigger pay day and are willing to endure legal siege warfare while running the team further into the ground. The league may have to get historically ugly with the BM and Hansen on this.

On a side note I almost wish I had the cocaine concession up in Seattle, because this guys are clearly NOT sleeping and are on some serious drugs.

Both the Magoofs and Hansen are slimy people. No wonder they get along so well. They think they can buy anything, but they can't buy a soul!

Truly, they want to slime up the NBA with their actions.

Do they really think the other owners are as desperate for $4 million in relocation money as the slime Magoofs would be? The Hansen group may be ultra rich, but so are the majority of NBA owners, except for the lowly Magoofs.

I hope the NBA blocks this obvious attempt to steal a team from Sacramento and also blocks the minority share attempt. There is no reason the BOG would need to approve a sale to Hansen for minority share, when it is obvious they are trying to sabotage the Sacramento efforts.

Block the Magoofs from getting any relief and force them to sell, smoke them out. The NBA needs to invoke the "Best interest of the NBA" clause now, before the Magoofs really ruin the NBA reputation.

I can't believe there were people on a Kings board as late as a few weeks ago defending anything about the Maloofs, these screw balls have zero empathy at all for the Kings fan base and only wish to screw them over.. Bad people... These votes will go our way.. but it will be another saga getting this franchise out of the slimes hands

Wonder if NBA still regards Hansen/Ballmer as a "prototype ownership group"? Hansen is actually giving NBA reason to vote AGAINST THE SALE... since he's proving to be such a loose cannon with no grasp of the bigger picture - no willingness to "play ball" with the league. If I was a fellow NBA owner I'd just as soon NOT have Chris Hansen in my league.

Lets hope the NBA firms up and resoundingly rejects all of this crap next week!

Dead on. Nothing changes. I'm just mad this thing keeps dragging on...

That report also solidifies the morality of Hansen/Ballmer, as if it needed to be... They are creeps who want to come here and sabotaging the market to relocate the team, as is the perception of Clay Bennett... The most worrisome about this is that it is causing the relocation committee to reconvene

Funny...none of this changes the fact that the NBA doesn't WANT this team in Seattle, they want them in Sac. Hopefully the BoG is smart enough to refuse a pathetic collection of bribes and threats...

I admit, this below part of the recent espn news article bothers me. It's just the sudden meeting they are talking about to reconsider the offer......Dam* I dislike the Maloofs!

"The group trying to move the Sacramento Kings to Seattle is continuing to be relentless in its pursuit. That includes the current owners of the team, the Maloof family.
And the NBA could be listening.
Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer, the deep-pocketed Seattle-based investors trying to acquire the team, have struck a new deal with the Maloofs that may create more drama in Sacramento and the league office.
That new "backup" plan comes on the heels of Hansen's announcement on Friday that he had upped his offer to buy the Maloofs' 65 percent of the Kings to $409 million (from $358 million) for a total valuation of $625 million.
Sources said that new proposal also included a $115 million offer to owners as a relocation fee, which would amount to about $4 million per team. By comparison, in 2008 when the Oklahoma City Thunder moved from Seattle, they paid a $30 million fee to the other owners.
To consider these incredible new figures, the NBA relocation committee is planning to re-evaluate the Hansen-Ballmer offer and has scheduled another meeting ahead of next Tuesday's full owners' meeting in Dallas, sources said."

This is true. Just like Major League Baseball did not want a super rich "loose canon" like Mark Cuban to join their fraternity when the Cubs and Dodgers were on sale, hopefully the NBA would not want a loose canon like the Hansen group into the NBA.

Can you imagine this type of loose canon owner screwing every other team with total disregard for the salary cap and structure of the NBA. The league owners worked so hard in the last collective bargaining negotiation to try and even the playing field for all teams, including the small market teams, and for this owner to want to come screw every other team up.

No way I would want that if I was an NBA owner. The only ones who would benefit from these kinds of owners are Magoofs and Hansen and the Seattle fans, all other teams would suffer.

The league will definitely deny the 20% minority share sale to HBN. I fully expect the league to enact the best interests of the league clause and strong arm the Maloofs out of the league for good. David Stern and the BOG aren't about to be made a fool of by the worst owners in the league and a wealthy outsider. This is an obvious move for the Maloofs to make. The league will still have to force them out for the same amount of money as the original HBN offer. However, the Maloofs are absolutely torching their reputation. This also makes me question HBN's endgame. HBN's pride seems to be more important than having a team in Seattle.

I'm almost certain the best interest of the league clause is on its way.

Just trying to play devils advocate here.

But cant Maloofs then sue? If I am the Maloofs, they just got 75 million more now which is almost 20 more percent of what they are getting before today.

Or is the bottom line, its too late?

If Seattle didn't think that Sacramento could come up with the $$$, why did they increase their offer?

If Seattle thinks that the "new" $625 million valuation would sway the BOG, why change tacks again and try to enact this backup plan?

If Seattle was so upset at Bennett for doing basically this same thing, why are they trying it now?

Again, this is the death rattle of Seattle's attempt to steal our team. They are grasping at straws. They will NOT win. In KJ we trust. Sacramento is following the NBA procedures to the "T" and will be victorious.

Keep the faith.

the amount of bad karma these guys are willing to load on themselves is astounding. can anybody imagine doing business with the Maloofs these days? like, at all? nevermind all other professional sports leagues on this planet, but this kind of posturing has to be hurtful for any kind of business.

First off, the seller's would not be receiving an additional $75M. It would be 65% of $75M, which amounts to $48.75M. Of that amount, the Maloof family would only receive $39.75M after deducting Hernreich's 12%.

Secondly, as I've already pointed out, the Maloof family would have no legit argument that they lost money in the deal. This additional "volunteered" money is only now on the table because the Sacramento group decided to fight to keep the team and the NBA decided to allow them to do so. If the Sacramento group sat on their hands and made no attempt to try to keep the team and if the NBA decided to ignore their efforts and rubber stamp the original deal, the seller's would have never been offered this additional money.

So, considering all of that, what would their case be against the Sacramento group and/or the NBA?

Oh yes, this IS about positioning for a law suite. The threat here is that if the sale and move are not approved, then the Maloofs will sell to H/B and keep he team. And no doubt THAT sale will be refused. Now the anti-trust suite begins, and the BM are free to take 'earnest money' from H/B in the mean time. This virtually dares the league to take the team away by using the "Best interest" clause which may be thin in court, begging another law suite since it has never been challenged before. I will not go out on a limb here about possible out comes but I will say the process WILL be ugly.

This doesn't frighten me at all. The NBA isn't going to be strong armed by a couple outsiders and the Maloofs tool bag. After everything the league has done to facilitate the local SAC ownership group keeping its team they're not going to allow these extreme last second moves to change the outcome. To do so would project an image of weakness for the NBA and they're not going to allow that to happen. The BOG is reconvening In order to reaffirm that they will enact the "best interests of the league" clause. It's comin.
