"Kings trying to lure AK from Russia" Jones Tweet

I absolutely would not mind overpaying for AK. I'm tired of the revolving door at SF, and he could really nail that position down. He's 31, so while he won't be around forever, we could get decent value out of a 4-year contract. He's also a great veteran presence to help bring along our youth movement.

He's the type of player that every team needs to hit that next level- he won't blow you away with stats, but he's very Matrix-like in that he does a little bit of everything and will do all the small things to help a team win.

Nail down the position? He's averaged 63 games played over the past 3 seasons, with injury issues for most of his career. I hardly call that bringing in a solid player to nail down a position. Talent is irrelevant if it's in a suit on the bench.

That's what also makes sense about this move. In the event that he does get hurt, we have Salmons who can play behind him at a high level. Also, because we do have Salmons, we don't have to play AK 40 minutes a night, so there's a chance that we can reduce his minutes to reduce wear-and-tear.

So...what's the point of overpaying for this veteran talent if the plan is to limit his time and split minutes with Salmons anyway?

Well since there is only 66 games this season, that is perfect!

I reallyy would like this move. Ak fills a lot of holes and gives us that shot blocking player we need. his numbers have remained pretty steady through his career. To be honest I never want salmons to suit up for us. We really need to start off the season on a high note to drum up excitement. The last thing I want to see is him hogging up minutes and hurting the team.

Because playing in 80% of the games means the postion is left open?

Ak47 is the perfect fit guy for us here. He can be the defensive catalyst we need. He has the length to give the shotblocking we won't have if Hayes/JT/Cousins and Hickson are the frontline, and he is a much better passer than people realize. This is the guy who along with Hayes' more vocal leadership could become a Christie like figure for us. Do all the little things and inspire everybody else to follow suit.

This guy didnt get the name AK47 for nothing. He's worth every damn dollar we hopefully will be paying him. He needs a fresh start in a city that will embrace him like nothing else. Once this hopefully happens, I will be a firm RE-BELIEVER in one Geoff Petrie for building an exciting/competitive team from the ashes just 2 short years ago. Who's with me dammit...lets do this!! ;)

I might be happier with the chance if this was a playoff team adding a vet to make a push, but this is a team that is still at the bottom of the barrel record wise, and are trying to claw their way to the playoffs. These types of signings, IMO, doesn't fit that plan.

How else are we going to get there in the first place?

I've mentioend before as well that time is shorter than people think it is. Tyreke Evans' contract is up after next season. Cousins the year after that. We are beyond the "waste a year developing" stage. If we don't get our act together and pretty quickly we will be in real danger, as even a cursory review of all the renewed Chris Paul/Dwight Howard drama queening should tell you. Its time to start winning, or at least to look like we could.

And...how do you suppose you go from 'the bottom of the barrell' to a playoff team?? By the draft, FA signings, and trades...and AK would be a HUGE part of that! Our lineup would be pretty damn good if we got him...with:

C: DMC
PF: Hickson
SF: AK47
SG: Thornton
PG: Evans

Tell me that isnt a pretty damn good starting 5?? I'd say .500 at the least...but with the addition of Hayes off the bench, and Jimmer from the draft, to go along with JT...Garcia and Donte...and don't discount Petrie signing/trading to get other solid players to round out our rotation before the start of the season...THAT isn't a 'bottom of the barrell' team if you ask me.

Jason Jones @mr_jasonjones 31 mins
Westphal said he'd be surprised if his starting 5 wasn't Evans, Thornton, Salmons, Hayes and Cousins.
YIKES

Luckily I know Westphal will change the lineup ten times before the season starts.

Good ole' Westphal...with his delusional starting 5 as always...why the hell would he start Hayes over Hickson?? I'd start JT over Hayes...Chuck will be best utilized from the bench, thank you. And yes, his starting 5 will change at LEAST 10 times before opening night.

By developing our talent more, especially considering the building blocks of the team being the most inexperienced. Cousins is still very raw, and only has a year under his belt. Evans essentially has a year and a half, due to injuries. The team is going to attempt to develop Jimmer as well. Even with AK, they are still a year or possibly two from getting to the playoffs, so I think this type of signing is early. I don't see AK helping this team to the playoffs this year (chances are higher with a short season, though).

I think the time would be if this team won 40-45 games last season, or close to .500 basketball, being a few spots away from the 8th. That's the time to strike.

Because Hayes can somewhat hide Cousins defensive deficiencies?

How? Hayes isn't a good team defender, isn't a shot blocker, etc. He is a assignment defender, good to bother and limit an opposing frontline player with his athleticism and lower body strength. Cousins will still get abused by his man, which is why Dally was valuable because at least he could rotate and effect shots at the rim.

Hayes can't hide others defensive deficiencies because he's not a shotblocker. That starting five has little to no passing and nothing to protect the rim on defense. Not unless we're all flopping for victory.

My worry with AK is more a worry with Salmons. I feel AK deserves to start over Salmons, but we know John won't think that. So you have to bring AK off the bench. Will he sign here to be a 6th man on a bad team?

Yeah, we've been through the Salmons issue, and know he's not happy unless he's starting and getting touches.

Why do you guys feel salmons has that much say? I can understand if you guys said that the Maloofs wouldn't wanna pay someone his salary to sit on the bench but it makes no sense to worry about what he thinks. F him.
