Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Had considered George several ties, and even created a new potential Grades Theme, if there ever is a season, in honor of him. But once I went Jeff Healey instead knew there would not be room.

Sorry for the delay, been held up and of about 7 different minds what to do with this pick anyway. Was very close to opting for mediocrity in search of modern rock band padding, then was going to throw a little love at a young artist who I actually discovered because of this draft and who I think is really impressive as a songwriter. But that began to look faintly ridiculous given that this far FAR more accomplished woman was still setting there, so screw concerns about list balance or whatever:

Stevie Nicks
Sort of the cherry on top of my collection of female singers and rockers. One of the all time great and unique female rock voices to be sure. Obviously this only covers her still quite extensive post-Fleetwood Mac career, spanning I think 8 albums, numerous complilations and duets, live shows etc.

Just liked this version even though she's technically with Fleetwood Mac on this one:

This was such a hard decision - there were a couple of artists (and great albums) I had to let go, but in the end I couldn’t skip on one of my all-time favorite albums coupled with an absolutely amazing guitarist. Plus, this draft has gone altogether too obscure in the late rounds and I want to pick somebody people actually know, even if not well: Extreme

Yeah, everybody thinks of them as the band that did More Than Words (not that there’s anything wrong with that - it wasn’t quite the sappy song it sounded like) but in general the rock was hard, the songwriting was great, and Nuno Bettencourt’s guitar was plain unbeatable. III Sides To Every Story is one of my favorite albums ever, and I don’t think it has even lost anything almost 20 years after release. They first hit the big time with Play With Me, which you may know better as the ripping guitar solo that Beethoven inexplicably played on the keyboard during the mall scene of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Years active: 1985-1996, 2007-present
Catalog: 5 studio albums, 1 live album (~7h),
Landmark songs: Play With Me, More Than Words, Hole Hearted, Rest in Peace, Politicalamity

Song cycle I keep coming back to:
That’s right, song cycle. Everything Under the Sun is a three-part, 20+ minute opus, blending an orchestra and piano with Extreme’s guitar-driven aesthetic and some really nice polyphony pulling it together at the end. Seriously, if you’ve got the time you won’t be disappointed.

Proof of guitar chops:
As best as I can tell, this clip of Nuno solos comes from 2009. Apparently Nuno had not forgotten how to play 1990’s Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee (5:45-7:17, if you only give the solos 90 seconds, skip to that) which he nails live. And the rest of it is pretty stellar. He pulled all of this out in one show.

I had a couple different ways I wanted to go with pick 30 and honestly my 2 selections can't be more different from each other. The deciding factor in going with this next band is that their music holds more meaning for me than the other. This band's music was a consistent staple for me from 2005 - 2009. Any memory I had from those 4 years usually had this band's music as a part of it.

He sent it to me so I will do it:

For SacKings7:

Well, not much of a writeup for this one since Dime Dropper’s last writeup works perfectly even though these 2 guys hate each other. Just replace “The Documentary” with “The Hunger for More”, and “Game” with:

Lloyd Banks

This guy is my favorite rapper, and The Hunger for More is my favorite hip hop album. I don't listen to too much hip hop anymore, but when I do it's usually Banks or 2Pac or Eminem. He is the punchline king, and I'll gladly debate that with examples with anyone that opposes

I just get a chuckle of VH1's bands reunited when Nuno insisted he had far too much better stuff going on to be bothered with an Extreme reunion show, which apparently is being Rihanna's stage guitarist and shredding anonymously through the background of her songs.

Thought Extreme should have gone waay higher, but better late than never. Their later work is pretty darn good, even if it didn't have all of the hits that the first two albums had.
Pornograffiti has some nice funk to it:

But my favorite is:

My next pick is another artist who should not have been left hanging at this stage of the draft. Although he had been dabbling recently in directing movies, I still prefer his music more than his movies(though I admit, I like his remake of Halloween).

For my final pick, I select:

I had a thought of picking the band at first because of this song, but I realized I can have the same song with his 'Greatest Hits' album, and his music catalouge towers over WZ's.

Have to spoiler this vid though. As this is a live vid and I have not had time to review it(am at work at the moment), I am not sure of it's 'friendliness'.

For my final pick, I will select one of my favorite, but, ultimately obscure bands:

Bikeride

Bikeride is from OC and made some incredible indie/psychedelic pop albums... until the main man, Tony Carbone, a school teacher, died of cancer... such a great group... wish they could have been around longer.

a little 7 minute documentary about the group...

Just wanted to say this was a lot of fun. What a great excuse to go back and really comb through my music collection. Watching everyone pick was fascinating. Got to see some great lists come together, and got introduced to some cool new stuff thanks to you fine folks. Special thanks to Brick for putting this together.

I’m surprised the following bands, to name a few weren’t drafted..

* = was on my radar

Big Star
Deftones
Dinosaur Jr.
Dio
Dokken
Foreigner
Gang of Four
Grateful Dead *
Kansas *
Kraftwerk
Melvins
Motorhead
Neutral Milk Hotel
New York Dolls
Slayer *
Steely Dan
Styx *
Suicidal Tendencies *
System of a Down
The Replacements
Thin Lizzy
Whitesnake

Had we kept going, Slayer and The Grateful Dead would have probably been my next two picks. Shame that two such legendary bands went undrafted.

And then there’s a whole slew of underrated/overlooked bands like

King’s X
Gentle Giant
Nevermore
Camel
Porcupine Tree
Opeth
Return to Forever

And that’s not even getting into genres outside of rock! I could have went to 100 and still felt like I was leaving too many out.

Pretty good list going there. From your list, Thin Lizzy surprises me the most as not having been picked, although Dio would have been about round 8 for me.
Speaking of Thin Lizzy:
Maybe not one of their better known songs, but it's a favorite of mine.

I would add Diamond Head to the list:

And what about Twisted Sister? Especially now that the holiday season is upon us:

I would have sworn up and down that the Deftones were drafted before Cake was. I don't think I like them enough to have made room for them (I do own Under the Fur and White Pony) but wow, I totally thought they were taken.

Neutral Milk Hotel was on my short list simply for In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. If the draft went 31 or 32 rounds, I would have ended up taking them.

Pretty good list Rook. I actually considered Dokken instead of Tesla, and then again when I picked Priest. Dio I got my fix with the Sabbath pick. Slayer got some consideration. I don't know why I thought Motorhead was picked. Thin Lizzy should have been picked as well.

New York Dolls I love, but really a one album band for me. I was leaning towards Thunders since allmusic gave him the Heartbreakers album with the rest of his solo stuff but was happy to see him picked by someone else.

Suicidal Tendencies I like but mainly for their first record and I already was way heavy on punk and hardcore. The metal stuff was way hit and miss for me and Join the Army was dreadful. Even during my wannabe skater days I couldn't not laugh through Possessed to Skate.

Replacements... it was the Mats or Husker Du and I like HD better.

Deftones, I always hated them but shocked they weren't picked, I remember my brother playing a show with them at the Cattle Club when everybody (us and them) was still in high school.

Some metal stuff I really like that I just couldn't pick:
Forbidden
Death Angel
Testament
Sacred Reich

Punk bands I left off are probably too many to list but the biggies were FEAR, the Minutemen, the Buzzcocks, the Circle Jerks and Stiff Little Fingers. To a lesser extent the Dead Boys, the Rezillos and MC5. Others: Throwrag, Teenage Bottlerocket, the Queers, Screaching Weasel, the Vindictives... I could have done all punk to be honest and been extremely happy.

The Bangles didn't get picked did they, I would have picked them for the GoGos if I knew I wasn't already picking LtC with my last pick. I mentioned them on Facebook and found new members to the cult even though there are none here.

Here are the ones I had considered at some point that hadn't been taken and were still sitting at the bottom of my list:

Tony! Toni! Tone!
Lupe Fiasco
Smokey Robinson
Chrisette Michele
Lily Allen
Run DMC
Diana Krall
Norah Jones
Elvis Costello
John Mayer
Justin Timberlake
Blackstreet
Grateful Dead
Parliament & Funkadelic
Jerry Lee Lewis
Sam Cooke

I'll wait for Bricklayer to finish updating the selections but I'm pretty sure we can start submitting rankings right away.

Elvis Costello was drafted (early if I recall right)?
I went with Eddie Cochran over Jerry Lee Lewis.
Run DMC would have been my rap/hip hop pick if I made one.

I'm surprised Nick Drake and Nick Cave didn't get drafted, I expected King Crimson to go too.
My next ten picks would have probably been:
-New York Dolls
-The Exploding Hearts
-Reatards
-The Birthday Party
-Devo
-Richard Hell & The Voidoids
-Reigning Sound
-Butthole Surfers
-Jacobites
-The United States Of America

Great draft everybody!
