Just had a discussion today on whether the Cars are great or should be considered a guilty pleasure. I didn't even know why it was a discussion. I guess their later stuff doesn't quite hold up but that first album is brilliant.

The lyrics are super gay. I just kind of like the groove/vibe of it.
Honestly I could just never get past the giant douche of a singer.

I go back to my X pick and Billy Zoom's prescience about tattoos. Crazytown was one of those turning points when it wasn't just cool bands that had em anymore.

I tend not to pay much attention to a band's image. I like G&R too so I can tolerate douchey singers, lol.

I don't either, but there was a time, now quite a long ago, that you could at least kind of sort of tell that you might like a band by album art or the look of the band. Still a hit or miss process, but music was a lot more self discovery then too. Now it's all been coopted by bands that produce bland, safe, pre-packaged BS.

*for the record I think I'll pick a current act at some point.

I agree that I could probably guess who i'd like based just on how they look and probably be right about 60% of the time. I just meant that a particular look in itself doesn't annoy me or make me shy away from a band. I guess that comes from listening to so much glam metal growing up. Once you get used to bands looking like this, nothing else really phases you.

Crazytown guy just had two many red lights flashing all at one time for me. And his stints on whatever celebrity rehab/sex rehab reality shows seem to prove that I probably wasn't too far off the mark.

I'm actually quite OK with the fact that I have no idea what you're talking about. The subsequent discussion suggests I'm not missing anything except for maybe a few episodes of TMZ.
Really the first thing that came to mind was crazy town as an expression, then milliseconds later it sprung into mind that that crazy town itself was the name of a band that really sucked, fronted by Anthony Kiedis and Lance Bass's lovechild.

Do yourself a favor and don't look at how many views the video has on Youtube

I don't really care that much for any of them but Dre is far ahead of the other two you mentioned in my book. I have two artists in that category I really enjoy but I'm likely to pass as I keep adding artists to my list.

Dre is a very good pick but your statement is very debatable.

Nonetheless, there are still other rappers out there who are better than anyone taken so far.

I do too but that one takes it too far!
I agree.

Doesn't help that it was a devious bugger by so egregiously sampling a good song. Every time it came on the radio there were those few seconds of happiness when you thought they were playing RHCP's "Pretty Little Ditty," but then Shifty Shellshock (no, seriously, Shifty Shellshock) would start talking up m'lady and your earlier enthusiasm was completely deflated.

And now for something completely different. I have my my grunge, alternative, rasta, folk, and classic rock...

Now to add one of the classiest, classic voices in music history. I'm truly surprised that he has survived the draft this long! With an extensive catalog rivaling even Elvis and the Beatles in scope and influence. Without further ado, with my 7th round choice, I select:

Frank Sinatra

It's funny how now that I have a little more time to think about things I talk myself out of some picks and into others. This time, time has led me to:

Santana

Similar to Genesis, I like and am familiar with Santana because of 1990s work, but they wouldn't be getting picked here if they didn't have a long history of making music that adds more than just the most popular stuff to my island.

I stated I had an opinion, that alone is not debatable. But frankly I don't really think my opinion is either. :)

re: Santana and Frank, kind of funny they were picked back to back - one was briefly my uncle and the other lived next door to one of my real uncles. I can't say I really would pick either but I respect what they did.

Pick momentarily.

My next pick is The Misfits.

The progenitors of horror punk that launched the career of Glenn Danzig and inspired countless other imitators. The Danzig period from 77-83 is the heart of the discography, they would disband, have all their albums go out of print only to become something of a phenomenon after Metallica covered them which lead to countless reissues and their eventual reformation with Michael Graves taking over vocal duties. I know people that swear that the Graves era is actually better (or even good) but I will have none of that. However I will be able to sample it if the Elvis On Stage albums ever grow stale.

Favorite Songs:
Also: Teenagers from Mars, Astro Zombies, I Turned Into a Martian, Last Caress, Children in Heat, Halloween

Great pick, love them even though they weren't going to make my list. Now that I know you're into horror punk I might have to change my drafting plans.
I'm trying to keep people on their toes before I start drafting artists 4 people reading these boards know about. Assuming I don't get tempted by low hanging fruit, of which there is quite a bit of lurking out there right now.

Interesting pick. They're one of the few punk bands I really like. Probably mostly because they're one of the few who had a singer that could actually sing. I haven't listened to them in ages though.

Relax dude, I know your opinion isn't debatable :) But it's a stretch (to say the least) to say that Dre has a) achieved more than either and b) has a better catalogue of songs than either. Dre had his day without a doubt, and he's a solid producer, but his legacy will be nowhere near that of the others. Just IMO of course :)

But I didn't make point a or b. That's your own criteria for making picks, not mine.

I do really like Glenn's voice but I don't really focus much on the vocal proficiencies of punk, its more about what has to be said. And I do think the lyrical imagery they conjure up is fascinating, though at times it does descend to shocking to be shocking. Aside from certain hardcore bands where it is all shouts though I am curious which big acts you think can and can't sing. After this is over, of course :)

Also, there is a disparity that exists within the artists/bands drafted so far that I have promised not to point out, but I don't know how much longer I can go without calling attention to it. Y'all are killing me on this one.

Killing me.

In going along with my unconscious "one big name, one indie band" pattern, here's the next (stretching that term in relativity) big name. Number two in most books, number one in mine.

Portishead

I saw a saviour
a saviour come my way
I thought I'd see it
at the cold light of day
but now I realise that I’m
Only for me

My First Album of Theirs: Dummy
Favourite Album: Third
Why I Started Listening: Thanks to my roommate, I once had a, rather extensive, Trip Hop phase. During that phase I also, again via my roommate, discovered Portishead and whilst I've cooled a bit on most other Trip Hop stuff, Portishead is still a favourite of mine.
