Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

My next pick:

R.E.M.

R.E.M. in the 80's was the ultimate in alternative rock music... no one could touch them... then, in the 90's they exploded. They have put out albums that span genre after genre... to me, they are like the U.S. version of the Clash...
Great pick, but I hate you now.

I need some Jazz and swing on my island too, to that end I'm taking Cab Calloway.

One of the great entertainers, Cab Calloway was a household name by 1932, and never really declined in fame. A talented jazz singer and a superior scatter, Calloway's gyrations and showmanship on-stage at the Cotton Club sometimes overshadowed the quality of his always excellent bands.

Great pick.

He works rotoscoped, too:

For my next pick, i'm selecting my first and (maybe) only Rap artist in this draft:

Yeah, definitely one of the biggest left and I've looked at him repeatedly, but ultimately decided that I probably wasn't going to take a token hip hop guy unless I seriously started running low of artists I like more. I do have a smattering of hip hop songs in my repertoire, but no great concentrations, and while Eminem might have more of them than anybody else, he's still nowehere near one of my favorite artists.

I had him ranked lower on my list too but I just realized that I may lose him(which would hurt since he is the only rapper that I truly like) and I figured that my other picks are safe for now.

I can understand why people prefer Cream, but I was raised on his solo stuff. It's just so iconic to me. Clapton defined how rock music should sound for me growing up.

Hmm almost let these guys slide another round but I can't risk losing them:

Hey William, maybe you should give Siamese Dream another try:

Spoilers just to save space.
I think as far as an album goes, it's pretty good throughout.

Seeing Eminem and Jay-Z already go, I knew I had to select my favorite rapper of all time here.

Dr. Dre

Pioneer of West Coast Rap which is my favorite kind of Hip Hop. Just one clip of one of his songs brings back loads of memories for me. Also one of the best producers in music today as well.

"Nuthin But a G Thang" is still one of the best songs ever IMO.

All videos are clean version for the sake of the message board..

I don't really care that much for any of them but Dre is far ahead of the other two you mentioned in my book. I have two artists in that category I really enjoy but I'm likely to pass as I keep adding artists to my list.

Won't hurt to give it another try, it's been ages since the last time I listened to them.

I agree. Another good reason why I'm not in this draft.

A childhood favorite of mine :) Now I might be able to wait on them but they really are one of my all time favorites.

The Jackson 5

I can listen to song after song and they won't get old. I also now have the complete Michael Jackson library :D

Mayonaise (why they called it that I'll never know) is probably my favorite song by them. Love that tune

It's about time to get some blues on my island, and there's no reason not to go straight to the best of the best: B.B. King

What is there to say about B.B. King? He's an absolute legend, and should already have been taken. I'm fixing that. And now I have about a billion (note: exaggeration) blues guitar solos on my island, along with that classic gravelly voice.

Years active: 1949-present
Catalog: 46 studio albums, 16 live albums, 138 singles
Landmark songs: 3 O'Clock Blues, Sweet Little Angel, Every Day I Have the Blues, Ain't Nobody Home, The Thrill Is Gone

I do believe that by the "duet" rules I get joint custody of this little ditty with U2 as well:

Last 4 picks range fromThe Decemberists, to Beethoven, to Van Halen, to B.B. King -- to say I'm having a hard time getting a read on where you're headed next would be an understatement. :p

Good pick. I would have considered him were he still around later. He has a ton of albums so you're getting a lot of material.

Hey, I'm not even sure where I'm going next! (But I do have a couple of guesses!)

The Cars

Masters of the pop hook, and at the forefront of the New Wave/punk revolution against the worst excesses of classic rock, I wasn't sure how to assess the risk of these guys being taken and decided to make the pick while the picking was good. They were a huge band back in the day and cranked out a decade's worth of hits, and their music is just as fun today as when it first came out.

Another band taken... no stolen, from my personal list. Nice pick.
