Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

With this draft being pretty unpredictable already, I can't let a crucial component of my CD collection pass, just in case it doesn't come back to me. Maybe he's not a great "value pick" here, but I just can't tell and I can't take the risk. So I select "Weird Al" Yankovic.

What can I say? I need some funny on my island. From his humble roots recording parodies on the accordion (and yes, I think I may end up being the only drafter with any accordion on their entire island...), Weird Al has come a long way musically, to the point where his parodies are nearly indistinguishable from the original. In addition, Weird Al's music spans basically every possible genre, a mix that will be nice to have on my island. He's also developed a pretty nifty knack for making music videos (like this one - link) that elevate his songs - sadly I'll be forced to recollect those while I listen to the music, but the parodies will still stand on their own.

Years active: 1979-present
Catalog: 14 studio albums (10h8m, counting Peter and the Wolf/The Carnival of the Animals - Part Two with Wendy Carlos)
Landmark songs: Eat It, Yoda, Like a Surgeon, Amish Paradise, White & Nerdy
Song I keep coming back to:

It's a value pick in my book. I love Weird Al. i never would have thought to draft him though, so good call.

I am glad this picture identifies the subject because the headband had me thinking Mike Reno from Loverboy.

My favorite Weird Al is actually an original.
Not sure its a value pick in Rd 2 when he'd probably be around in the teens, but he's a great way to nab a lot of genres in one selection. I had briefly considered adding him to my list.

If I were stuck on a desert island for the rest of my life, I guess there wouldn't be more fitting of a band than this to keep me company..

The Beach Boys

Always a favorite of mine growing up and I still love them just as much even though there are of course some newer members. All of their songs hold such personal memories for me. Actually just saw them in concert in Lincoln in July. Still put on a great show! My husband loves them just as much as I do!

Damn, was hoping they'd slip as they were virtually untouched in previous drafts (Pet Sounds was the only draft pick I recall besides mine). Beach Boys were my first taste of grown up music. My brother and I lost a summer strumming our tennis racquets on the porch and lip synching as Al and Mike. Ok, we were kids, we didn't know that crazy guy on the piano was the real genius.

Also our first concert, at Harrah's Tahoe. We were invited on stage but declined. Soon after Brian left for good and the nastiness between Mike and Brian and Al began as all tried to carry on the legacy on their own. So glad we got to see them at mostly their best (Dennis had already passed).

For various reasons I was going to have to wait until round 5 or 6 so I am glad they found a home with someone that loves them in an early round where they deserve.

Yep, One More Minute is a great song, probably contains my favorite double entendre ever.

Yeah, it just takes one other person to ruin your draft, though. Let me put it this way - I just went back over the entire movie draft, and there were only four movies (seven if I could have been guaranteed the entire LOTR series - I didn't want an incomplete trilogy) taken that I definitely would have grabbed in the entire draft. That's 300 picks outside of my own, so the probability that another drafter was going to take something I wanted very badly was about 2%. Here, there have only been 24 picks so far, and already 5 picks are off my board that I would have taken by now, and at least 4 more that I definitely would have taken eventually. So I'm not here to "play it safe" with the high-exposure stuff. I'll take the risk that you guys don't know that great Moroccan bagpipe quintet I'm saving for the late rounds, but everybody knows who Weird Al is, and it only takes one big fan out of 19. :)

I hear what you're sayin. And there are a few unknowns, especially since it was easy to "make up" a miss in the past music drafts. I've lost two which is high for me but then again they are very well known artists and I expected to lose some from my top 5 but once we get past the 5th round I expect pretty smooth sailing. I think.

While losing out on Cash hurt I did get my favorite solo performer so I may as well scoop up my favorite band, or at least the "stock" answer to that question for most of my adult life. So with my second selection, I choose The Clash.

It's funny because in the wake of Elvis the Clash's catalog is not so "deep", yet it spans 6 records and only the 6th and final record is considered an absolute turd and donkey. As a bonus their 3rd album was a double-LP and also one of the best albums in history, with IMHO the best album cover in history

and they followed that up with a TRIPLE-LP. Their debut album was also drastically different in its US and UK incarnations so that is almost like a double-LP as well, and then they had numerous career retrospectives, anthologies and B-Side releases that extend their legacy even further.

While at their core they were considered a punk band, stylistically speaking they were only "punk" during their debut album and its slick overproduced follow up. By the time London Calling rolled around they were doing lots of dub, reggae, rockabilly as well as a few pure pop tracks, and (although I am no fan of this word I am not sure of another word to describe it) the epic "The Card Cheat". With Sandanista! they would experiment with rap and world music and Combat Rock would mix in some electronic elements and music over poetry. Their last record, Cut the Crap, involved some lineup changes and is generally disregarded by all fans.

One cool thing about the band is that in addition to the wide variety of styles they explored, 3 of the band members have taken over lead vocal duties on tracks which really adds to the depth of their catalog.

On a personal level they hugely influenced my own personal style and expanded my musical boundaries beyond what I was listening to at the time.

Here are perhaps two of my favorite songs, the aforementioned "Card Cheat" and "Lost in the Supermarket".

Other favorites (with links):
Janie Jones, Career Opportunities, White Riot, London's Burning (punk)
Police and Thieves, Guns of Brixton, Pressure Drop (reggae, dub)
Brand New Cadillac (rockabilly)
Magnificent Seven (rap)
1-2 Crush on You (bubblegum pop)

Big Singles:
Should I Stay or Should I Go, Rock the Casbah, Train in Vain, London Calling

Oh yeah, shortly after Joe Strummer passed in 2002 I got my dog Strummer.
EGADS!!! This was my next pick!!!! Well played... well played... Also, I am working on a high quality version of "Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg", do you have this one? (If not, let me know via PM) It is Mick's original take on Combat Rock with different versions of a lot of the tracks and extra tracks... it floats around as a bootleg on the internet...

I'm about to leave for school so I have to make this quick... I'm so torn with this pick because I have 3 different ways I want to go with it. But honestly I could never go eternity without this band.

Fleetwood Mac

Included is easily one of my top 10 songs ever by any artist...

Amazing drumming!

Some others I love:

I was thinking about them but ended up deciding they didn't quite make the cut. Stevie Nicks is one of my favorite artists and i love quite a few songs she did with the band. Overall though, they have a lot of mediocre material as well as a lot of pre Nicks era stuff that I'm just not familiar with. I do know the Peter Green era, and like it, but not enough to add value in a draft for me. Sweet pick from a volume standpoint though, they have a ton of material.

Often overlooked/forgotten about today but monsters in their own day. I hadn't even considered them, but they've got at least a dozen great songs I can hum along to.

Fleetwood Mac is more my wife's style but I think the main reason they were off my radar is that I have a hard time distinguishing when they kinda ended and when Stevie Nicks took off as a solo artist. But when I get my bearings straight they do have a very nice catalog. I think my favorite song of theirs was actually recorded under the name "Earl Vince and the Valiants" even though it was Fleetwood Mack on the B-Side to the "Man of the World" single.

My son likes me to sing Landslide to him and if I mess up a word he very sternly corrects me!

On my phone so I'll do writeup later. I pick

Tom Petty

I had a bit of a tough time deciding here, I had about 10 different artists I wanted to pick, but ultimately I had to go with pure value. I probably haven't heard EVERYTHING Petty has done, but I've yet to hear something that I didn't like. And Tom Petty is one of those artists that, at least for me, you can listen to again and again and for some reason you don't get sick of hearing the songs. Anyway, hopefully this thing gets back to me with minimal damage done, although I'm expecting to be hit pretty hard.

Like the Stones, Tom probably doesn't require these videos but here goes:

He gets both. That was the "Joan Jett and the Blackhearts / Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band / artist & band I'm not telling you about until I pick them" rule.

My pick here was going to be Johnny if he was left. He's not so I will have to go with my secondary choice here...I will be taking Kenny Rogers for the little bit of country on my island. 7905_kenny-rogers.jpg

Tom Petty or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers?
Indeed, this was exactly who I was thinking of when I made up the "&" rule. There was no break there. It was really just Tom Petty and his band. The Heartbreakers were not a separate entity.

And its too bad too, although I knew there was a risk as we passed through the Classic Rock set a second time. I would have loved to get these guys Rnd 4 maybe. So many good songs.

I knew you had your eye on them too. I'm warning you now that Ken won't be around forever so best to pick him in the next round.

Whew, I had to cross ten names off my list in just 2 rounds! Good thing I chose to take Metallica when I had the chance, my island would not be complete without them.

Now, for my second pick, I had them listed for my 4th/5th round pick, but I moved them up coz i'm worried that they may not come back to me:

aerosmith_promophoto.jpg

Favorite Song: Dream On
Favorite Album: Get a Grip
# of Platinum Records: 2
# of Multi-Platinum Records: 9
# of Gold Records: 3
One of the greatest if not the greatest American rock and roll band ever. Aerosmith has been tested by time and still remains relevant. They are my favorite Rock and Roll band.

With my second round pick I'll go with

Otis Redding

My favorite voice of all time, and one hell of a performer.

I can see that I was correct to take Cash by the reaction, and by Pdx' little digs and animosity towards me (maybe I'm being paranoid).

Like the Redding pick. Might be the obvious choice, but 'Sitting on the dock of the bay' is one of my favourite of his.

My second round pick:

Simon and Garfunkel

This was slated as my First round pick, but I got lucky with the #1 pick... I have this band's complete discography on CD and most of it on LP. So many great tracks: Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Bleeker Street, Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer, America, Kathy's Song, I am a Rock, Cecilia, Scarborogh Faire, Homeward Bound, the list just goes on forever. Art Garfunkel's voice is one of those voices... a once in a generation talent. Paul Simon's songwriting is at it's absolute finest with Simon and Garfunkel... In my opinion, the greatest folk-rock artist of all-time; others were more political or more prolific, but no one could write and perform a song like Simon and Garfunkel.

For my third pick, I select:

The Beastie Boys

My favorite hip-hop/rap artist of all-time by a long shot. I have the majority of their albums... my favorite is Paul's Boutique... so many great lines, so many awesome songs... so many funny, funny videos. This band's sound morphed in the 90's with a more alt-rock feel, but, interestingly, their sound returned to the old school style... just awesome. Also, how many of us can finish this sentence. "I'm Mike D and I'm..."

I was curious why the Paul Simon picker didn't go for S&G, to me that's the better pick. Beastie Boys I still don't get after all these years. I know I'm mostly alone on that one so probably a good pick.
