Kings Fans Bee Ad

#1
Below is our advertisement that will be published in this Sunday's edition of the Sacramento Bee.

I worked very closely with the folks behind Here We Stay.

Originally the idea was to get a positive word out and show some pictures of fans having a good time at a SACRAMENTO KINGS game or from the rally at City Hall.

I found a picture of the golden 6th Man Fan sign online and used that as an example and we kind of went from there. Problem was we needed an original picture that was taken by us. So after the Here We Build rally, the Here We Stay folks said they would drive to ARCO Arena (it will always be ARCO to us) and take some pictures.

I was on my way home and decided to turn around at 15th Street or 16th Street to take pictures myself just in case they were unable to do so before it got dark.

When I arrived at the sign, there was the Here We Stay folks taking pictures.

Underneath the sign there was some words below it. When we read it, three words stuck out to us and we decided that those three words would be used as our positive theme. Those words were: PASSION, COMMITMENT and LOYALTY.

When it came to our message, less means more. I hope you all approve of this collaboration and our voice as one.

Do you want blunt feed back or is this something that a group of people I don't know decided was a good use of my money.

I'll give my feedback anyway as I think what I am disappointed with is correctable. The picture is great although what the 6 means may not be common knowledge. That's not a big deal. I was hoping it would be more of a plea to get the Kings to stay in the Sacramento area than an ad for a game. I wouldn't be critical if I didn't think the words could be changed as the most difficult part is the layout and that's fine. Who exactly are the Here We Stay people? And yes I know when the deadline is.

Join your friends to show your support.
Keep the Kings in this area.
The best fans in the NBA
and the Sacramento area deserves them.
and
We'll mow the Maloof's lawns if they stay.

instead of "deserve" maybe substitute "have earned"

Can leave out "Sacramento area" and simply leave "Sacramento" if need be but it means something to me as a non-Sacramento citizen.

Unless Jiffy Lube squawks, the sponsors ads needn't take up so much room. As I said below or above or wherever I said it, it needs a bigger message and can fit with what has been done. It's just words, size of fonts and the size of the sponsors ads that can be chaged. Your typical ad would have the sponsors names in smaller fonts than the message and simply words and not logos.

No offense but I feel the same way. I will trust your judgement as I'm assuming that this particular ad is a done deal, Mike. Again, thanks for putting it together for us!

Disappointed, and that's all I'll say for now, because I do respect the work that went into it. But it looks its only purpose is to get people to go to the game, which is already close to selling out, and has been advertised freely at sactownroyalty for weeks. Doesn't contain any message or plea from fans. I honestly feel like we paid for an ad for the HereWeStay group, who to the best of my knowledge, want nothing, and have never wanted to have anything to do with us at kingsfans, and that comes from my own personal interaction with a few of the shmucks running sactownroy.

I've been banned from the site responsible for HereWeStay, over a disagreement. Don't feel to good about contributing to what feels like "their ad", when I'm not welcome on their site.

I think background pictures of some of the greats in the Sac era would have been a great addition. Maybe Webb, Vlade, and Mitch? Maybe something about having great memories, and lets unite as fans so we have more great memories in the future. Something which can capture the excitement the Kings have given all of us over the years, and that we don't want it to come to an end. I would also mention the Maloofs by name, and make it clear our message is directed at them. After all, that is who we are pleaing to.

Mike, just being honest here. I do very much appreciate all the work you have done.

Can remove "area" although 75% of season ticket holders do NOT live in Sacramento.

Blah, blah about when and where. The why was missing.

Probably doesn't fit.

The "Here We Stay" hardly needs to be so prominent as it seems self indulgent. The three words are actually used twice in the ad. I don't believe PBP needs to be mentioned at all which leaves space for a message. If people on "Apprentice" can do things in a short time, we can.

See above as how the sponsors can be entered to save room for the longer message.

Ditto on the focus for the Here We Stay game -- it just seems to dilute any personal plea to the Maloofs (like when they had the billboard to keep Webber in Sac, it was very personal) and seems to say "Come join us for this one game." I like the Passion, Commitment, Loyalty though.

I was hoping to see pictures or even just words from Sacramento fans from the gut. Something that shows our personal connection we have and how much effort Mike, KF and HWS group has put in.
just a minor disappointment.

Thanks for the work Mike, I still believe.

since i didnt donate, i probably dont have much say about the ad, but based on the original post in the thread asking for donation, i also thought the ad was going to be a plea to the maloofs similar to the webber billboard or at least an ad that showed how much we love the kings. when i saw that this thread was here to see the ad, i was curious to see it. to tell you the truth i was disappointed because it looks more like an ad for the game instead of what i thought it was going to be. overall i still thank you for all the work you have done...not only in dealing with the ad but everything

Now it's time to place a one page color ad in the Sacramento Bee to show our support, dedication, passion and love for our Sacramento Kings and the Maloofs

This is from the original post in the ad thread. I feel the ad basically re-printed the words(or similar words) instead of showing how we feel. Also left out the Maloofs altogether, which I think is a big mistake. Think I mentioned that above. But we have to plea to them, direct our message at them, and include their names. Maybe even first names, Joe and Gavin. George if you really want to. But it comes across as a plea to fans to go to the game, instead of a plea to the Maloofs to stay.

I probably would start the ad with "Joe and Gavin.....many of us eat, sleep, and breath Kings basketball, its what we live for", or something along those lines.

Wrong font on my part, etc. Make the purple background a larger space. Make the white space small and the sponsors written in font and not logos. This is not my best skill. The info on the game could be put in the extra purple space at the bottom. It CAN be done if the "Here We Stay" people accept constructive criticism. Added drama on the last sentence.

It could even be "Join your 6th Fan friends" to make more sense of the 6. I would add a paragraph after "Keep the Kings in this area. It adds a little drama to the next thought.

Mike, as others have said in this thread, I do appreciate everything you have done and organized

But, I didn't pitch in $100 for an advertisement to a game.

Also, I feel like putting jiffylube, here we stay, and here we build as the people it's sponsored by is ridiculous.

The reason we couldn't get a full page ad is because we couldn't get enough money for a $5K ad. Now, the guys with deeper pockets than ordinary citizens on kingsfans.com are plastered on the ad when they contributed nothing to the ad.

You worked closely with "Here we Stay" to basically advertise for them with our money?

The money was to be used for an ad "to show our support, dedication, passion and love for our Sacramento Kings and the Maloofs."
You clearly stated that we had billboards, we already sold out the feb 28th game, we had a rally and NOW it was time for a personal ad.

Everyone who contributed money threw out suggestions, but yet you collaborated with "here we stay" (though I respect everything that they have done) who contributed no money when we could have used it to make a bigger ad.

I don't mean to come off rude or aggressive, but I live in L.A., so I have no means to actually go to these rallies, or go to games to support them every day, which is why I contributed to send a personal message to the Maloofs, which is what this was originally about.

I appreciate the feedback and I have Glenn working with me on this. I have zero skills in graphic design and I informed the Bee that we're making a slight change. Glenn and I will keep you all posted. Thanks!

I agree with this completely (but I only contributed $50). It wasn't to advertise Maloof ticket sales. I hope it can be re-written.

I'm redoing it with Mike's blessing and both of our crossed fingers. I have more than zero skill BUT I already can't even make a message without, oh, crap it's going to be a long one.

Anyone familiar with something like Photoshop. What I use is probably a clone and I can't even create a letter without it being fancy and haveing a separate color inside it. How do I just type a single letter with no frills. Seems obvious, huh?

I think everyone has already expressed all of my opinions. For whatever it is worth, I vote for appealing to Joe and Gavin.

I like the design, and really don't even need the sponsors at the bottom. How about just making it a short note?

Joe and Gavin,

Passion.
Commitment.
Loyalty.

We're still here, are you?

EDIT: I don't pretend to have any photoshop skills, and did this in about 5 min using, don't laugh, paint....and I don't want try to be another cook in the kitchen so feel free to disregard me...:) Oh and Mike, I know you wanted to have something like "We can work it out"...how about that at the bottom?

Did anyone other than directly on this board help pay for the ad? Maybe just have it say something like "from Kings fans everywhere" or along those lines.

#25
So something like...

Dear Maloofs,

Passion.
Commitment.
Loyality.

(then something here about what the team means to us, in like 2-3 sentences)

We're still here.
(or maybe we're still fighting?)

Are you?

Sincerely,
The best fans in the world.

Love the proposed maloof message. The key to this kind of newspaper ad is to keep it short and sweet with a nice emotional appeal. Nice job everyone.

#27
FWIW, I don't like the Are You? part. It sounds condescending. They are not going to be guilted into staying. It needs to show that the fans are committed to support this team and it needs to be directed at the Maloofs.

I’m no great writer but if it were up to me, I’d go with something like this...

Dear Joe, Gavin, and the Maloof family

We’ve been through a lot in the last decade. But one thing hasn’t changed. We still love our Sacramento Kings and will do anything to keep them. We implore you to please not give up on us. There’s still hope and we have faith that our good Mayor, Kevin Johnson, in addition to Comcast, ICON, etc. will be able to make it financially viable for you to Keep The Kings in Sacramento if you’ll give them the chance.

Passion.
Commitment.
Loyality.

Sincerely,
The best fans in the world.

I also love the part about "We can work it out" instead of "we're still here, are you?" That Beatles song really sticks out in my mind and it does sound much more positive.
