Kings May File for Relocation Before Deadline

That makes sense unfortunately. Wouldn't want to kill fan attendance.

The harsh cruelty would be if we busted our butt trying to get them to stay like by going to games on Feb 28 and they were already packing. I'd feel pretty foolish to be sucked in. They already could have filed although I will stick to my moderately supported idea that they will stay at least another year.
Hate to break the news, but fan attendance is totally irrelevant at this point. Selling out every game is moot if this latch ditch effort from ICON doesn't pan out.

Or we'll get something like this by the Maloof's;

March 1, 2011 Press Release: "After a lot of deep soul searching and thorough planning ahead we've decided to file a request to move the Kings franchise to Anaheim, CA. We expect the NBA will approve our request and allow us to begin play at the Honda Center for the 2011-12 season. As this is only an intent to move, we have the right to withdraw our request if circumstances warrant, but as of this date we do not expect such a change. We would like to thank Kings fans in Sacramento for all the many years of support and we will miss your enthusiasm. Best of luck. The Maloof Family."

Everytime a player gets traded what do they say? They all say the same, "it's a business." Well, Maloof's, no matter if you like it or not are running a business, not a charity!

Someone over at Sac Town Royalty said during the sports segment that Jim Crandell doesn't believe the Kings will move.

I missed the segment. Did anyone see it? What were his reasons?

I didn't hear that but Ed Crane did a commentary on 1530 yesterday basically saying that he believes the Maloofs aren't going anywhere and it's all just a well orchestrated smokescreen to put pressure on the city council. I sure hope he's right!

Yes sir! I'll be at the In-N-Out, which is one exit further away, for a preshow dinner. I'll be wearing my Sac State sweater.

Obviously they can't move without us knowing, but they can certainly file without us knowing.

Like Glenn, I am hoping they will hold off one more year. The Taylor/ICON group is probably our last best chance and its not going to happen without public funding as part of the deal. All I know is where were the important people when we could have used them? Everybody has just been dawdling along for 14 years. I just hope it isn't too little, too late.
I have a hard time seeing them holding off even if a new arena gets done. I mean we are second to last in attendance! Sure that would change if we started winning. But it is virtually guranteed to change immediately, no matter what, if they move, and the team will keep improving if they do. They might not even be able to afford to pay a full slate of good players if they don't move. The business is BLEEDING money. Even if they get a new arena deal, it'll take two years to plan/build it. And then you're back to needing to start winning just to stop the money bleed. Or, you could move now, perhaps get back in the black pronto, and all the while your team continues to get better.

I'm almost rooting for them to move just so that it'll help the plight of the team! I guess you could say I root for the name on the front of the jersey, the home jerseys that is.

Then again I moved away from sac 16 years ago, so my perspective is different.

As the Honda Center was built around the same time as ARCO, I wonder if they have money lined up to build a new arena in Anaheim. Perhaps the community is more receptive but I see no guarantees. I wouldn't want to be a Maloof at this time.

Nope - they said they would be in the black this year with the current salary structure. And given that the new CBA is almost guaranteed to give more $$$ to the small market teams (based on radio interviews, etc., recently) I think the Kings are in a position to keep making $$$ if the team shows improvement.

The community certainly isn't stonewalled, as it appears Sacramento is. And with Moreno and Samueli in cahoots with the Maloofs, I wouldn't be surprised if they could get a deal done on a renovation of the arena.

There is definitely precedent for that. George Shinn did it to try to force Charlotte to come up with a new arena by putting a gun to their heads. He applied to move to Memphis at the same time Heisley did it with the Vancouver Grizzlies. This forced Shinn back to Charlotte for another year, and when they still balked at dealing with the arena, he moved the Hornets to New Orleans. Afterwards, Charlotte had to build a new arena anyway, and they were fortunate that Stern granted them a new team after only two years. Vancouver is still waiting, as will be Seattle, many years later.

I don't think so. The county was bankrupt in 1994. Taxes are out the wazoo. I do not see public money coming for a new anything in So.Cal. Just look at the football situation and Staples. The HC is a sufficient arena - for now. The new Sprint Center in KC is the best unoccupied state-of-the-art arena out there now, but it is in KC. All that said, the Samuelis mean business when it comes to their Ducks in the OC. If there are two majors in a building, it might make it easier for a new venue to come on line when the time comes, public/private or combo.

It's not like the Ducks are selling out games.

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/...k&page=nhl/teams/145/attendance.aspx?team=145

It's around 17.8k for total seats. They are averaging 14.6k for the season after 15.2 last year.

So how many leave the Ducks if they Kings move there? It's not like everyone can afford (money and time) both especially when the seasons overlap.

The arena, its so called footprint, is the smallest in the league. Big production numbers like Cirque de Soleil need a lot of storage room and we don't have it and it can't be created. Renovation has been studied.

I know it's taken so many years and so many half baked proposals for a new arena. The funny thing I think we finally got all the right players on the board between the city and the arena planners. The city council finally looks to have the right number of members that aren't afraid to vote for some public participation. They have the right team of designers and builders as well. And if this process is given the next 90 days, I think it could happen. The problem was they kept trying to do the improbable with the wrong people. The NBA wasted so much effort on a plan to do this without public support, it was always going to fail. There needed to be some receptive people on the council that would entertain contributing public money to this. Once they saw what kind of crazy schemes it took, I think it sunk in a bit. Some key turnover in members happened and the climate is now as good as I think it will get.

Will the Maloofs even listen to thinking like this? Or is there a rush to get moving for a 2011-12 season that 99.9% of the world knows is not going to get started on time. At this point 90 days is everything to Sacramento and nothing to the Maloofs.

It's a fickle market here. The Ducks are on the decline, but they have a good org and will be back. (A much better org than the L.A. Kings). Anyway, as you can imagine, this place is filled with transplants (myself included) who don't care about any local teams, including USuCk. ;) All that said, NHL and NBA fans don't often overlap. I much prefer the NHL and I do attend Duck games. I'll be able to hit a few in the next few weeks, for example. I suspect what the Maloofs are banking on is OCers making the trip to Anaheim versus not going up to L.A., which is a big PITA.

Nothing really new. But the comments from the readers were interesting. Sounds like we up here aren't the only ones who see some major holes in the "perfect market" of Orange County. They are still counting on fans who grew up loving the Lakers to support them. It's really a no win situation because if they stink it up like they have the last few years, they will get laughed at or ignored. If they come together and win a championship, it will still be "scoreboard" time and the Laker fans will still say they have the banners. They will be in corporate heaven, but never in the drivers seat.

I know the Maloofs has been trying to get an arena for 10+ years, but the timing seems a bit odd, a bit rushed even, for the Maloofs to move this summer. A good business man always weight all his options before making a decision, and I just don't think all the options have presented themselves yet. Not when the ICON-Taylor group is still working on a solution. The last thing the Maloofs want is to leave Sacramento shortly before someone figured out a way to build an awesome arena there.

As for the reason: needing to move to a bigger city to attract FAs. I checked out the list of FAs in 2011 and I have to say that Tony Parker, Zach Randolph, and Tyshaun Prince are not guys you need to relocate a team for.

But then again, what do I know. The Maloofs doesn't seem like such savy business people when they lost hundreds of millions in equity. Some of the coaching decisions they made is less than stellar. Perhaps being patient up until they became impatient and leave is exactly how they approach things. I don't know. I suppose whatever happens, happens.

Well...yes, that is pretty good logic that all of us in here can see, but as we know(and they have said it themselves in the past)'We're gamblers...' So I think logic isn't in play here, even with the Maloofs hurting financially as they are.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the more I think about it, the more I believe the Kings will NOT be moving this summer. They may still file the paper or ask for an extension, and they may still move away down the line, but this summer just seems rushed considering all the moving pieces that's still out there.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more I believe that OC is a bad choice if they do move.

But then again, it's not up to me. The Maloofs are self-acknowledged gamblers like you said, so perhaps they're ready to roll the dice. Oh well, we'll see.

If they file they move. Very few will get season tickets or go to games if they file. I think they want the extension to hold off season ticket holders asking for their money back on the remaining games.

OTOH, it could be and probably is that they do not want lame-duck status in Sacramento. It's also possible that they do not want this to drag on during the lockout. Quick and clean break. Hopefully, I am wrong on that.

For what its worth, KCAL (local LA station) did a report on tonight's news and interviewed various sports fans in sports bars in Anaheim around the Honda Center and EVERY SINGLE fan they interviewed said they want a basketball team in OC. A couple of them explicitly said if OC gets their own team, they will stop being laker fans and become Kings fans. One guy said its just too much of a drive to get to Staples Center for games and it would be perfect to have a team in the OC.

You do realize they interview maaaannnyyy more people than they show and they only show the ones that fit their agenda, which would be to get a team in OC.

Jim Crandell just got done explaining that both options are still on the table for the Maloofs and that their definitely isn't a done deal yet... however Crandells bets are on that the Kings stay. Crandell says that his source is a Kings official that he "trusts"...
