Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Alright baby! Have to photoshop up something new here -- this one is getting worn out from over use. :p

[yt= The Game Winner]X6MGueF-IlM[/yt]

Casspi ( B- ) -- while Reke was of course the story again tonight, Casspi had a role to play before it was over as well. Wouldn't have known that was going to be the case early as Omri came out in this one just like he had played n Golden State, which is to say flat as a board. Just nothing early again, bricked an open three off a Reke kick out of the double. Ran a terrible break. He had grabbed a few defensive rebounds, but the offense was not there. But as has sometimes happened this year you could really feel the coaching staff consciously trying to turn things for him. At the end of the first half we had him step up to take a technical FT -- obviously not who you would normally have take it -- and he hit it. And we came out of half wiht him more involved, including quickly splashing in a three as we came back in the early third. Went hustling in for an o-baord and drew the foul, later rattled in another jumper. Added a good strong take in mid 4th, and more d-board work. Still looked like he was setting himself up to be the goat when he badly missed back to back shots down the stretch that almost killed us, first a driving layup at the 3:30 mark, then an airballed post
move from the right block. But again you could feel the coaching at work behind this game, as despite the struuggles, despite another poor 3pt shooting night, we came out of the timeout at the 1:11 mark with the play drawn for Omri for a three from the left corner, and he drained the huge shot to tie us back up. Afterword this was the quote from Wetphal:
“He does seem to have that ability – I can’t think of anybody I’d rather have shoot a three-point shot that matters for us than Omri. He’s less than 36 games into the season and I think a lot of people on our team believe that he will make most of those clutch shots. So I just think that the guys on this team believe in him, the coaches believe in him and he believes in himself – (tonight) he showed why there is that belief
Reke is unquestionably our closer, but Casspi is the guy we trust to hit the big three. Not bad status for a pair of rookies. Overall not one of Omri's better games, but hit the big shot when we needed it.

Thompson ( F ) -- ok, and so we interrupt a generally feel good set of grades to announce a meltdown. Jason...Jason just never showed up tonight. Certainly his head didn't. Whatever slump demons he has been dealing with, they all came home to roost in this one. And the thing is, the coaches just got tired of it basically and benched him. Brock was keeping it simple and doing what Jason should be able to do. Spencer of all people now had the confidence and played a major role for us in winning this one. So Jason bouncing around screwing up and hanging his head over it just became a distraction we did not need on the night. Started with a high turnover on the spin, came up with a good take, then got his next shot blocked, and was out quickly to sit on the bench and think about it as Hawes came in. Started off the third poorly again, missing a hook and then fouling. Gave us a cou0ple of some good d-boards, but it was not long before we figured we could do better with Spencer/Brock again. Back in to start 4th and quickly turned it over leading to a breakaway, then shuffled his feet on a post move as he was not strong enough against Nene's physical defense. Then picked up a foul. Brockman was back in for him at 6:00 mark and thought maybe that would be it, but the coaches again made themslves evident and surprisingly JT was back in for the final two minutes. A subtext to all of these close games and wins and losses is jsut how important Westphal has deemed it that it is the kids doing this. You don't see all vet lineups out there trying to experience in a win, he puts as many of our key kids as he can in the game at the end, and if it costs us a game here or there, that's ok as he is trying to accelerate the growth of the young players. Fortunately while Jaosn had a miserable game, and looked like he was in misery all night while having it, he did not cost us the game. Even had a minor role in saving it as he and Nene got tangled up on what should have been denver's final possession to try to win it, the offensive foul was called on Nene, and we got the ball back for Reke to play the hero. Not enough to bump this grade though as this had to be some sort of nadir for JT. Not only playing terribly, shooting terribly, turning it over, but losing the confidence of the coaching staff in the process and watching much of the game from the bench.

Brockman ( B+ ) -- got the start likely because of his work against Nene last time we faced the Nuggets, and quickly justified it and then some. Quickly got an o-board, aggressive take and second effort. Did the work you expected on the galss and banging bodies early, but offensively unable to ever overcome his stubbiness and finished up 2-9 wiht numerous shots blocked and altered inside. Unable to use his size inside over Smith on a switch. In the early second again had back to back defeats inside, the second swatted out of bounds by Birdman. Took a bad jumper from 18 feet -- his only real ill conceived shot of the night. Continued working the glass into the third, adn effectively benched JT with his play (or maybe Hawes did, but either way that was the pairing). Got overpowered to the rim and fouled Martin for the +1, but often guarded Nene and impeded if not stopped him. Came up with an offensive board and follow of a Hawes miss for his only second ahlf points. May legitmately have tired in this one -- think he had 8rebs at half, and possibly all 12 of his by the end of the third. Not a factor in the 4th, but a definite factor oin the game doing a very nice job as a physical/boarding roleplayer. Grow him 4 inches and make him a shotblocker as well, and in fact that is all we would need from that position. Do the dirt work, clean up the messes, stay out of the way of the stars.

Udrih ( C ) -- Basically played one quarter out of four tonight for us. Did nothing, I mean NOTHING before half again. Just nothing. It was the second half vs. Golden State redux. 0pts 1 ast at half. But then came out in the third and exploded out of the gate with a jumper, a three, set up Casspi for a three, and he, and we, was back. Missed the technical foul FT at the 4:53 mark of the third, but then hit another jumper and added two FTs to close the third. And then promptly disappeared again, including some shoddy defense on Billups and Smith, until adding two clutch FTs just before Tyreke's game winner. A bit siimilar to Casspi int hat the struggle continued from the other night, but both guys came through in the clutch to make contributions.

in progress...

Evans ( A- ) -- and so yet another clutch shot (after two clutch FTs) for superrook. I am not sure why I even bother holding my breath at this point. Had a few good patches early, but actually started this one fairly slow. Had a turnover on a silly crossover dribble attempt, then a good +1 on the one man break. Balls were just not crawling over the rim, and despite nu merous kickout passes, guys just weren't kncking down shots created by Reke's presence. Fell asleep and tunred it over in the open court to Smith. Scored the last 4 points of the half however on a dive and then a step back jumper, and still finished wiht 10. Hit the tying jumper in the early third, and finding his range followed with back to back jumpers a couple of minutes later. Got into it with Affalo, picking up a double technical (he and Affalo each getting one, not Reke with 2 of them) and was actually showing a bit of anger for almost the first time. Really started muscling inside in response, and just rammed the ball down Denver's throat -- I am thinking the punk a rook/make him mad tactic may be something the Nuggets will scratch out of the paybook after this one. Did eventually airball a three that was just going too far, but J.R. Smith responded to it by what was immediately destined to be a Sportcenter staple -- wasn't watching the ball in flight, just maybe saw it brush the net and hit the floor and assumed it was a clean swish, not an airball. So he picks up the rebound and calmly steps back over the endline to inbound it. If he wasn't already well known as maybe the biggest moron in the league, that play would have confirmed it beyond any shadow of a doubt. Then crunchtime came, and reke made up for the Golden State struggles in spades. Big three to get us within 2 at the 5:45 mark of the 4th. Held the ball for a long time, but then delivered a big explosive drive +1 to give us a three point lead at the 4:00 mark. Delivered a nice pass on the high pick and roll to Hawes at the 1:20 mark. Then drew the foul at the 29 second mark on the drive and hit both FTs again -- I think he's missed exactly 1 clutch FT all season. Then following Mr. Big Shot coming up with a big shot -- a 25 foot three with Reke and JT both chasing him well beyond the 3pt line, the game was tied, and you knew what was coming -- Westphal's 1-4 Flat play once again. Clear everybody out, let Reke go to work, and this time the Nuggets somehow ended up with Kenyon Martin on him. Goodbye. Drove hard down the left side, stopped and spun before the big man could recover, and fell away for the game winner over the top (replay at top of this thread). This is an All Star caliber guard, right here this season, as a rook. Don't believe me?

Bench

Hawes ( A- ) -- the numbers here aren't going to truly blow you away, but for the second night in a row Spencer showed how he can be useful even while still playing a finessey game, and was a major reason we pulled this one out. Was at least working in the post, got a turnover with too many moves, but then a solid move fighting through an attempted ball strip. Got victimized by a flop I think by Graham, then Martin jumped into him for a foul the other way and Spencer barked at the ref. But did not go away, lose his head like JT, or back down, instead responding with an o-board and finish, then a good pass to Udoka out of a timeout in the mid 2nd for the layup. A great one handed tip slam of a Reke miss in the post. Was just as effective after half, dropping in a good post move after retunring in the third. Went right at Birdman in the early 4th, using his body to shield the block. Played strong down the stretch -- canned a big three to tie the game at the 4:30 mark, and that was three he had actually earned with all the inside work. Missed the open side jumper at the 2:15 mark but came back with the nice hoop off the high pick and roll with Reke. Hit Casspi for an assist to put us up three. Got called for goaltending on Martin, but it was a nice attempt at a recovery block. Not much on the glass, caught him giving up the body too much on defense, but really you had to be pretty satisfied with this Spencer -- an aggressive offensive player using his size.

Udoka ( B ) -- played a major role in the first half, as Ime Udoka was agian maybe our most effective offesnive player before the break. Knocked down a wing three off of Reke penetration, then a drive again off of Reke penetration -- that maybe being the key, Ime is a classic roleplayer and knows how to play off of stars and find those open seams. Knocked down nearly everything he put up before the break, and I think was tied for our lead in scoring at half -- of course that stat just underscores how lackluster our first half was. Was not a factor after the break however, either offensively, where his only score came on a nice drive and reverse layup using the rim to shield himself from Birdman, or defensively where he was not able to cool either Billups or Smith in the later third and early 4th.

Rodriguez ( C ) -- good steal in the early 2nd to stop a Denver break, but then immediately tried a no look pass into the corner and threw it right back away. Able to get to the rim for ahoop, had a pair of FTs. But no impact in first half minutes.

Nocioni ( D- ) -- grown so so erratic, you can almost see that contract becoming more untradeable by the day. Missed his first jumper, and a Brockman/Noc/Udoka/Beno/Sergio mini-team to start the 2nd was a disater, leading Westphal to call a timeout and fix it...by inserting Kenny Thomas in place of Noc. That was the big move. Had his solitary bright point when he hit a three in the early 4th to cut the lead back to 3. But then forced a post move out of a timeout, turned it over, and was on the bench before he could chase us entirely out of the game.
down

Thomas ( INC ) -- in as Westphal's answer to our mini-lineup disater in the early 2nd -- yes, Kenny was in for his "size". Scored over Birddman after everybody else was intimidated by him. Then a nice touch pass to brockman in the interior. Had a ball poked away by Birdman for a turnover. Solid enough little stint hihglighted by that nifty little pass. Did not return after half.

Notes: had 6 TOs in first 6 horribly sloppy minutes. There was a technical foul on Westphal late in the 2nd. We came out on fire after half, opening the third on a 15-2 run. When things started getting rough in the mid third it was nice to stop being worried about being intimidated by those kind of tactics, and it is all becuas eof our three rookies, all of whom were on the floor at that time. Timeout at the 1:11 mark was a good idea to slow it down, make sure we got a good shot, and then the play call for the corner three for Omri if course worked brilliantly. Westphal is a COY candidate, but one thing that I think has to change here -- he's got to settle on a starting lineup. It seems every single night it's a different starting 5, and that makes it hard to develop cohesion and teamwork with new units out there all the time.

Great WIN!

As I side note, was this the most heavily tattooed team league versus the least tattooed team in the league tonight? I seriously think it might have been.

I think You've struck on Jason's problem. He just needs some tattoo's. :)

Tyreke was number 2 on NBA Fastbreak's Top 3 plays of the night. They also ended their show by showing JR Smith taking the ball out after Reke's airball. Called it brainfreeze. lol.

I'm voting "Only Hawes" because much as I like Brockman and hopes he stays on the Kings, I don't see him as a starter, more a super-sub, unless Peaches (my favorite nickname) can play power forward.

As for Spencer and Jason, I don't think both will be here in three years, so for choosing between the two, I lean towards Spencer, as he has more potential, is younger, plays the harder position to fill, and I think is a better player now. He would have to have an excellent defensive forward paired with him, however. Excellent poll! Can't wait for the grades.

I voted the same way for the same reasons.

jr smith "inbounds" wtf moment of the game?

LOL....did you see the game?

jr took a rebound (that he thought had gone in,,,it hadn't) and promptly stepped out of bounds with it as if to do an inbounds play. Such an idiot or as they said, "brain-freeze" turnover.

I just want to point out the unlikelyhood of ANYBODY from this past draft making that last shot. Tyreke is an extremely effective aberration of the pg position.

And it's incredible that Reke has at least 3 definitive game winners in the final 48 seconds (last two possessions of the game in theory) this season already as a rookie and the second youngest player in the league. I honestly wonder where that ranks among all Sac. There were players on our elite team who may have never reached that number. This kid is incredible.

Meh. Not impressive to me. He didn't do it with a "numb" elbow, a hangnail, a booboo on his thumb, or half the media attention of Kobe. LAAAME. Tyreke obviously sucks.
