And it was the best of all possible results for us tonight. We won. In a close, exciting game. On the backs of our kids. With our ROY superstar in the making showing off for ESPN. In front of a good crowd. I've tagged several games this season as important ones for this franchise. I tagged Reke's first big game against CP3, because it was so critical he not be abust after we took him over Rubio. I tagged the explosion against Deron, because right there, 6 games into his career, I just knew what I was looking at -- something unprecedented in the Kings era in Sacramento. We drafted a superstar. And tonight it came together in critical fashion. Like that Kings team 11 years ago now (11!) that exploded onto the national scene, refilled an arena, regenerated a passion (people forget thast Arco had cleared out the season before that team arrived too). Like that team this one plays with passion, has the steady veteran coach, has found a superstar, and is getting people talking about it. And it was just so critical we put on a good show here. The fans who went had to have fun. ESPN won't forget and may give us more games. Just a critical outcome. Makes me happier than a rained on rooster or something.

And in a vote that I would be willing to bet was almost entirely split along male/female lines, my plan to celebrate with a pretty girls theme has been approved by the majority, while I have been tut tutted as a misogynist by the rest. So I have decided to do the theme anyway, but sensitive misogynist that I am, I will put the lovely ladies under Spoiler tags.

Time to kick this puppy...

Casspi ( A- ) -- got the surprise start (well surprise to me -- I was watching the ESPN feed and they flipped over just seconds before tipoff without explantion. Took me several trips down the floor before I realized how come Hawes looked so small out there). Made the absolute most of it. Started off doing a nice job of cutting inside on offense, finishing and drawing fouls. Splashed in a three as well. But on the other end but was having trouble on defense against whoever he was guarding, and given that the Wizards start two former All Stars at SF + PF that is maybe not a surprise. But made a great hustle save on a scramble play diving out of bounds to flic the ball back in on what would eventually end up as a Donte reverse slam. Came up with a big game tying three in the late third courtesy of Sergio on which JT picked up a loose ball foul. And his passion inspired a back in the good ole days roar from the crowd. Followed with an aggressive take to the left of the hoop. Added a nice lean in runner in the late 4th to staunch the bleeding as we started to slip and then batted the ball ahead to Reke on the break for a slam. Got away with an offensive foul with the off arm on a flying finsih on the break. Missed any chance of losing the "-" to his A as he missed back to back open threes down the stretch set up perfectly by Reke (in fact was only 2-8 on the night, well belwo his ridiculous 49% seaosn average). He hits those, it ices the game for us, he finishes with 28, and I call this an A. He missses them (and wisely declines to shoot a third a few seconds later), and I still call it an A-. First start for the kid, and he did himself proud and inspired the team and the crowd with his passion. For his reward I grant him this:

Omri's countrywoman, SI model Bar Rafaeli. Seemed only appropriate.

Nocioni ( B ) -- this was a tough tough grade, because Noc did a hell of a lot right for us out there, and hit some huge timely shots. It was a major bounce back game. And yet this grade just had to be depressed because as nice of a bounce as he gave us on offense, he got scorched on defense as our smallball was a defensive disaster. Just could not handle Jamison at all as Jamison showed why he's a former All Star 4/3, and Noc is a roleplaying 3/4. Jamison had something like 20 points in the first 15 minutes of this one, and really the only thing that slowed him was a minor shoulder injury of some sort. Took a while for Noc to heat up his own offense and respond. Forced a 1 on 3 fast break move in the early second that just had me shaking my head, but then came back and splashed in an open three courtesy of Reke. And really came on strong for a key stretch fo the second half. Had a big sequence in the late third, blocking a fast break attempt on one end, then racing the other way to can a three and get fouled for the 4pt play on the other. Closed the third by faking a three (actually probably shuffling his feet a bit although it was not called), and agressively taking it to the rack. Canned a big three in the mid 4th too as we opened up just enough cushon to hold on to this one. Just a lot of big and timely plays for us on offense, and I wish I could ignore the defensive woes and give him a better grade. But as is, still a solid grade. He was important to the win.

And if Omri got Bar, it seemed only fair that Noc should get one of his countrywomen -- model Nicole Neumann. Kind of makes you wonder why you would ever bother coming north.

Thompson ( B+ ) -- JTs stock in this one, and his subsequent grade, was up and down more than the Dow. Started off the game working Jamison (I think it was Jamison) down nicely to set up a post move, was taking good smooth jump shots and looked good on offense -- about as in control as I've seen our hyper PF. But there was a game long problem at the other end, because Jason, as has been mentioned before, is just not very strong. He's listed at the same height as Dwight Howard, but he has never, at any point in his career, shown any ability to hold off a big center. And Brendan Haywood is a BIG center. Was just non-existent on both mand and help defense and overpowered by Haywood on the glass. In the first half he fought back by smoothly stroking those jumpers and putting up strong first half numbers wiht 14pts 6rebs, but in the third he was just getting killed by Haywood and had no answer on the other end. Got bad enough that we eventually, for the first time in the game, inserted Spencer...possibly for defensive toughness! That was kind of the nadir of Jason's grade. Because when he came back in the 4th it was with a new defensive focus + new energy. Immediately he grabbed a d-board, then came up with 2 momentum shifting blocked shots. Then went soft on us again with a soft foul on Haywood leading to a 3pt play as Washington struck back and closed again. But came up with a huge o-board and finish at the 1:45 mark to help us hold them off. This grade is a lot like Noc's. Did a lot of things right, 17pts 13rebs 2blks is a beautiful statline. But also got overpowered inside for much of the night and may have made an even more ineffective defensive center than Spencer. Gave him the extra "+" I did not give Noc for the key 3pt play in the final two minutes.

Well JT is just a boring old American, so just a "boring" old American lass named Rachel Nichols for him. Least I think she's American...my attention seems to be oddly diverted at the moment. Well at least I know Slim will enjoy her, regardless of her nationality.

Greene ( B- ) -- these last two nights one of the interesting developments has been the emergence, seemingly out of nowhere, of Ime Udoka as a major minutes bench guy again. It was unexpected, I'm thinking shows a renewed focus for us on defense as we try to improve our weakness there, and has put major stress on the minutes of several of our normal rotation guys. Donte is one of those guys (Sergio the other). The effect tonight was that Donte played a lot of first half minutes, and had a strong stretch in the secodn quarter where he ws making some great plays, but then after a wild start to the third, found himself sitting for nearly the entire second half until the final seconds. Picked up two quick fouls in this one, but he pickd them up because he was one of the few Kings trying to play defense in the early going, so I did not mind. Started off the second quarter with back to back very aggressive drives against Blatche -- fugly, wild, but good moves that got him a hoop and 2 FTs. One of the really promising things wiht Donte in this early part of his second season is how much better he's gotten at reado things. He is a wlking mismatch nightmare, and he uses it. When you put a small guard on him, Donte has been going straight to the post to punish him. The Wiz put 6'11" Andray Blatche on him, and instantly he takes him outside and blows by him on the drive. Just smart bball. Who would have ever thunk I'd use that phrase about Donte? Threw down a highlight reel reverse dunk off a scramble play near the end of the half. Just a good stretch of ball there giving us bgi time energy. But started off the second half missing a three and turning it over, and wiht our lead rapidly disintegrating, he was replaced by the steady vet Udoka. Did not get back on the floor until the final 15 seconds for the defensive stand by Reke that sealed this one for us.

Donte...Dante...Dante's Inferno! Bectha did not know Donte as Italian did you? Well...neither does he. But it does give me all the pretense I need to post a pic of Italian beauty Letizia Filippi here.

Evans ( A ) -- well what to say here? Maybe just keep it short and sweet and leave it at "any questions?" The league adjusted to Brandon Jennings, and his numbers fell off. Tyreke Evans adjusted to the league, and now the league had better be afraid. Very afraid -- in December he's averaging 23.0pts on 51.9% shooting 5.2rebs 5.6ast 1.8stls and just getting stronger. Started off this one putting on a show on the drive and attacking Arenas, and while he did get baited into a couple of missed jumpers there was just no way Arenas could guard him, inside or out. Got Arenas into duel mode, and just beat him up like a school kid in the post -- and Arenas is a big PG too. Not big enough (queue evil laugh). Got a little wild for spell in the mid 2nd, getting a couple of shots blocked and losing control of a behind the back dribble for a turnover. Had one crazy sequence where it was something like get his shot blocked, get the reb, turnover on the pass, then steal it back and get the assist. Through it all though was also running the team, hitting the glass, and just playing a complete game. Had all 6 of his assists before the break and something like an 11pt 4reb 6ast line as he threatened the trple double. Slowed a bit in the third when the Wizards put defensive specialist DeShawn Stevensen on him...until Reke decided he had had enough of that and blew by Stevensen on three straight poissessions. Back in to start the 4th and immediatley bulled his way to the hoop twice in a row for scores. Forced back to back jumpers in the mid-4th after the Wizards tried their 4th defender on the night on him, 6'8" SF Dominic McGwire. After missing a layup as well backed off though and started distributing again. Got the flying dunk on the break courtesy of a Casspi bat ahead. Then stepped up and hit the clutch jumper at the 2:45 mark. Missed on a drive to the right, and threatened to have a taint thrown on a huge night when he got called for a dead ball foul on Arenas on an inbounds play at the 25 second mark giving the Wizards 1FT and the ball. Cut our lead to 1 and could have been a disaser. But then on the ensuing play as the Wizards tried to win it, made the play that everybody is talking about. Showed he can dominate on both sides of the ball as he made the great poke steal as Arenas tried to make his move, got fouled and cool as ice with the crowd going wild stepped up to the line and calmly hit the 2 clutch FTs. Game over. Superstar born on national TV. Good times.

Ever wonder why Andy Roddick never was able to compete with the Federer/Nadal duo? Its because he was distracted. Brooklyn Decker = his gf.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench
Thomas ( INC ) -- only got the short first half stint. Did a few things to help, grabbing one long rebound and actually making some solid passes leading to assists, but the one thing he could not do was stop Jamison either, and of course had no offensive punch himself so we went looking for answers elsewhere.

Did you know that KT was Taiwanese? What do you know, so is hottie model/actress Qi Shu

Udoka ( B- ) -- got long stretches in this one presumably for defense, but then you notice we gave up another 109pts and you can see how that worked out. Was a tough scrappy veteran presence all over the court however, and helped during his minutes. Started off with a good burrowing post move in there against Young, then a good little pop on the break. When he guarded Butler he was effective (so have many people been this year as Caron has been one of the odd disappointments for the Wiz). When he guarded Arenas, less so. Scrapped n the glass and had a number of little offensive moments, including even hitting a 24 second beater on our final offensive play of the first half to bail us out. but ironically failed at the very things you want a vet in there for. Made a bad inbounds pass near the end fo the half that led to a 24 sec turnover. Was blown by by Arenas in crunchtime for the layup. And made a terrible terrible turnover on the inbound play at the 22 second mark leading to a steal and breakaway dunk that suddenly had the Wiz poised to steal this one -- tried to get it to Beno, but the pass was soft (Beno didn't exactly shield his guy either), and he just threw away our cushion. As has been mentioned several times this season, is just not hitting his threes. TYhat was laway spart of his roleplayer game, but it was another 0-3 tonight, and he's at 3-18 on the year. I liked the scrap he brought to the tabel tonight, but that last play alone earned him the "-" here.

Udrih ( C ) -- been a while since we have seen beno struggle with his shooting like he did tonight -- since the ugly loss in Memphis before Thanksgiving really. But it was a little more than that -- like the second half in Portland the ngiht before he just looked out of rhythm, forcing things he should not have and not terribly comfortable. In the early going not surprisingly had trouble defensively staying in front of Arenas, and gave very little on offense back the other way, getting his only score on a nice Reke bounce pass ahead on the break. Got his fast break layup blocked in the late third, leading to a wild sequence we won. Forced a spinning drive late in the third, missed it, scrapped for the o-board again. Grabbed a tough board on the d-glass as well, and his contribution tonight may not have been wiht his offense bur rather wiht hsi scrappy play. Yes you hear that right. Beno Udrih -- valued as a scrapper. Hit only 1 of 2 FTs at the 17 second mark holding the door wide open for the Wizards to steal this one.

Well, could not come up with any famous Slovenian beatuies off hand, so Beno has just become French. And who wouldn't for this beauty -- maybe if more American news anchors looked like Melissa Theuriau Americans would actually tune into the news instead of Survivor 217 and could point out Slovenia on a map...or France for that matter (or alarmingly in some studies, the U.S. itself).

Brockman ( INC ) -- not surprisingly did not have the mobility to stop Jamison either as we gave him the very brief first half tryout.

Moon Bloodgood

Rodriguez ( INC ) -- finally got into the game in the late 3rd, and somewhat predictably forced a three perhaps trying to make up for lost time. Made a couple of ncie passes, then screwed up yet another end of quarter play throwing a bad pass to Hawes and turning the ball over. He has just screwed up those sitations again and again this season (as have we), and I don't know why -- he's our best ballhandler and creater. Anyway, tough situation for Sergio as as far as I could tell he has done nothing to lose his minutes. But iwht us trying to get size and defense out of Udoka, and with our increasing confidence in Reke as the top dog ballhandler, Sergio has been getting squeezed.

Spanish model Carolina Barcellona

Hawes ( B- ) -- and here was a shocker on the night, although given the terrible performance in Portland maybe not so much. Spencer not only did not start, he didn't play a minute in the first half and did not get in until the late 3rd quarter. And I know Coach of course tried to pass it off as a matchup thing, but all I have to say to that is that if he had put up 20-10 in Portland, he wouldn't have been a spectactor in this one. As mentioned did however finally get in with Jason struggling big time against Haywood's power, and immediately he grabbed a d-board and helped key a break for us. Then went over and aggressively challenged a Boynkins drive -- unusual for him, and maybe the message was getting through -- you're big, use it! Got overpowered by Blatche to start the 4th just to show that it really still was Spencer our there, but countered with a show and galloping power dunk past Blatche a few seconds later. Also had a good tap back offensive rebound. Was helping, but then turned his back on Arenas on a botched defensive rotation as he got shielded off by Haywood, and then traveled on an attempted post move. Jason was resummoned, and that was that. Given the circumstances not at all a bad performance. Looked more aggressive than normal, and gave us a little boost there. Also bought some time for Jason to suck it up for the stretch run after the pummeling he had received in the third.

Gina Holden -- She's Canadien, and Spencer is from Washington, so that's close enough.

Notes: no Sergio or Hawes before half certainly was a surprise, but we rolled right along. Westphal called a quick timeout to start the 3rd after we came out sluggish. Another good one as it seemed to jar us into gear agiain.

It's definitely starting, folks. Grab your seats now, fasten your seat belts and hold on tight. This Kings team is gonna start taking our breath away on a nightly basis. And we're still rebuilding. Dear God Naismith, I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!

Brickie - I'd like to recommend an A for Westphal tonight. He deserves it. :D

For those of you that are oblivious to the fact that there's a superstar in the making up in Sacramento, you can tune in to ESPN tonight at 7:30 and witness Tyreke Evans' greatness yourself ;)

What a blast tonight! My record so far this years on attended games...6 for 6. I was sweating there at the end, but my team kept my win streak alive. Oh yeah! It was definitely a good time tonight. And, I had the pleasure of meeting Capt Factorial tonight. :)

You and I must have different working definitions of the word "pleasure."

In the excitement, I think people may have overlooked the incredible performance by Beno Udrih tonight. I'm watching the game for the second time - to savor every moment - and Udrih was as good a player coming in and doing everything asked of him as you could ever dream of.

If you can, watch the game again. Knowing the result doesn't hamper the excitement...and it's a lot easier on your nerves.

Cool... I watched the CSNC broadcast but i really wanted to see the ESPN broadcast to see what they had to say. Now i have the chance!
I did not get to see the entire game cause of dinner plans, but saw the whole first half and interupted dinner to see the final 2 minutes of the game. From what I say, the announcers were very effusive in their praise of our players. And they seemed to love the potential of our young players. Specifically remember them going into long descriptions about just how good Reke, Casspi and Green were/could become. I am guessing they did the same for JT at least, but do not remember seeing it. They also praised Beno's improvement this year.

First time I've really had a chance to watch Reke in anything other than a highlights replay online....

Jeebus.

He literally kicks *** and chews bubblegum during games. I forced my friend, a Lakers fan, to watch tonight. He now believes my theory that Tyreke is either a cyborg or a genetically modified superhuman sent back in time to save the Kings. Once the "shooting upgrade" is beamed into Reke's forehead from the year 2100 its over.

That was also the most quiet 26/6/6 I've seen. Not even in a passive way either, he had that latent "I'll take over if I need to" superstar aura about him. And despite all that, he still has so many things he can improve in. His absolute worst case scenario potential wise is allstar.

Also....All the league will hate Omri in a couple seasons. Besides us Kings fans. He's like Peja but with rabies. And I mean that in a good way.

Just watched the replay on espn360!! Damn what a game! Nail biter down the stretch but I almost could not have asked for more in a nationally televised game as the performance was very good overall (yes we still badly need an interior defender), and the announcers said so many positive things about our young team, and especially went on and on and on about Tyreke. In a way it was good that it ended up being close, and then that fantastic devensive play at the end by Tyreke on none other the Gilbert Arenas and then forcing Arenas to foul and therefore fouling out! Great win, and, you must admit, great national exposure with intelligent, unbiased announcers (thank the lord that Walton has run out of breath). And I also must acknowledge Omri! Great game man!! Wooohooo!! Rookies playing their hearts out and playing great!! In a way, it's the perfect way to get over that Portland fourth quarter **** show. Also, I give props to Westphal for not playing Hawes in the first half, then giving him a chance, then he steps up with a couple big plays, then a couple terrible plays, then he gets pulled immediately... you could never say PW was not on top of the Hawes situation. In my opinion, he played it perfectly tonight.

All in all, great win by the Kings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):)
