With 79 games to go Kings have started the season 0-3 as expected. Starting the season on the road was too much for this team to expect a win. We deserved the one in NO but didn't know how to close it out. Now it is time for Kings to have their home opener. And yes, you guessed it right - we are the last NBA team to have a home opener. The Grizzlies will be in town which is a doable opponent to get a win. Hopefully our young team will feed of the crowd and manage to win one.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
6 out of next 7 games are at home and none of the 6 opponents is unbeatable. We will lose in Utah but Memphis, Atlanta, GS, Houston, OKC and Chicago - we have got to win some - meaning multiple. November seems to be the easiest month schedule wise and personally - I would skip January all together. Have no clue when we could win a road game but it will happen because we do have the theory of big numbers going for us and there are plenty of teams that are not much better than us.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It took only 3 games for our new shiny hope for the future to pick up his first hopefully minor injury. Anyone shocked - not really. If You are - welcome to the Kings basketball where the injuries happen. One can be ironic, sarcastic , one can try to use humot but regardless of how you wrap it up - it still sux big time. I was trying to think of what possible good can come out of this and I failed figuring it out. Well, unless you are related to Mason and Udrih who will unfortunately get more playing time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
3 games into the season I am still trying to figure out the purpose of signing Desmond Mason. He can't shoot, can't score, can't defend and he is clearly a quick fix because if he has any kind of Kings future - we just won't have any. In a situation where we won't win may games anyways - makes no sense whether we play, Mason, Casspi, Greene. If we want to have veteran presence - we can let Udrih play. Won't make any difference. I am not a GM and I am not qualified for that job. I am just trying to figure out the thinking process which leads to a conclusion in which Desmond Mason is solution to any kind of a problem. He have to stop signing the TDM winners if that is their only reference.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd game into the season Spencer Hawes decided that he is a basketball player after all and a tall one too. I don't know whether he is pissed because a shorter ans fatter dude got his starting job or whether he just needs time to adjust but tonight his attitude was good and he played really well right until the point where he decided to shoot another three which he of course missed. I still think despite "wussing out" very often - he should start.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Kevin finally made a FG% where we want it to be. In the first 2 games he made Alan Iverson look like a "poor" volume shooter. Other than that - Kevin gave us nothing. He is a solid player in this league. His disadvantage is that he is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He would gave been great for us in the glory years but he came too late. When we become good again - he will be "old." I figure - the best thing we can get out of Kevin Martin is a "Chris Webber' type of a player in a trade down the road. I wouldn't mind.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn't look like Kings will play any defense this season. 3 games are too small of a sample for an analysis but so far in average opponents are shooting better than 50%. If you add the fact that we haven't scored 100 pts in a game yet - clearly we won't winning games. A game -here and there but games - will be difficult. Sure we will improve as the season goes along but so will everyone else up to the point where GMs realize what kind of draft prospects are out there and then you will see about 10 teams starting to tank hard. We don't need to do that because we are talented enough to lose fair and square and because we won't get the 1st pick unless we declare ahead of time to draft Pervis Ellison of 2010. I say - we try to win as many as possible and see what happenes. We won't win many anyways. And if you really like to dream big you imagine Kings 201 with Wall/Evans in the back court with improved Hawes and Thompson. You sign a good SF as a free agent and make Kevin 6th man. Sweet dreams.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kings couldn't deal with the Spurs because it was back to back for us and because they are a much much better team than us. We defended poorly but we hung around for a while until Spurs went on a big run in the 2nd quarter where the game was decided. Both teams got something out of it. We got to play a really good team and Surs were able to rest starters because they had tougher games in the preseason than the one tonight.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
AWARD TIME

TDM went to George Hill and 10 years from now we will sign him to a mid level "something"
LW-VC went to the last teason TDM winner Roger Mason. It was a pretty bad night there for everyone named Mason anyways.
JHA went to Nocioni who shot and missed almost everything he touched tonight. If he continues - he will reach the trade value of one Kenny "triple double" Thomas.
SAR-Metuselah award went to Theo Ratliff despite having more blocks than all Kings team combined. Didn't he play together with Mutombo when they were in their primes ?
WTF moment of the game - let's just sat Manu Flopibili might get an offer to play a villain in the next Batman movie. We already know he can act.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Home opener against the Grizzlies who will play the night before in Denver - is a perfect opportunity for us to win a game. We should take advantage of that, push tempo and blow them out. Hopefully neither team will play defense which will favor us. We have couple days off which will hopefully help Evans recover and we will have a "sold out" crowd behind the team.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Martin - there is nothing wrong with getting a rebound or an assist. Should try it more often.
Evans - get well soon
Mason -
May - would be a decent backup
Thompson - might lead the league in fouls

Noc - get traded soon
Beno - get traded sooner
Casspi - start
Green - backup Casspi
Hawes - start
Brockman - back up Hawes and Thompson
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Grizzlies are actually pretty decent and will continue to be that way until lakers decide that they need another of their players for jung and Grizzlies say - why the hell not! Randolph - if he plays well - will cause us all kind of trouble. Iverson isn't playing and neither is Thabeet. Maybe we can do a trade with them. I am sure they can use Kenny Thomas. TDM goes to Conley, LW-VC will go to Gasol. Kings will win this one.

I would think if this is a young team that is going to lose a lot of games anyway, why not put the players out there that need seasoning and give them an opportunity to get better. Mason makes no sense to me either. They should start Casspi and maybe bring Greene off the bench. What do you have to lose?? I just dont get it. Well, hopefully they can play better at home than on the road. The NBA schedulers didn't do the Kings any favors again this year...

Nice write up, piksi. Looks like you agree with me on how the starting line-up should look. Hopefully, Tyreke will be okay to play.

PG...Evans
SG...Martin
SF...Casspi
PF...Thompson
C....Hawes

Do it, Westphal. It's our best chance.

Note: I know this is nothing new. Many of you are waiting for this line-up.

Hope Evans is OK - like to see him play in person in the opener.
In the Bee today: (Evans) "was limited to 24 minutes because of foul trouble and a right-ankle sprain in the fourth quarter that he said wouldn't keep him out of Monday's home opener against Memphis."

Good news.

I am probably a few that would not want this lineup. I would rather have Brockman in for Hawes and have Hawes come off the bench.

I hate to think that the real reason Hawes isnt starting is because we have no one over 6'9 on the bench .. but Im starting to think thats the problem. Its upsetting to say the least ..

I watched Memphis play Toronto on Friday. Randolph and Gasol looked real good on offense so May, Thompson and Hawes will have their hands full with them.

Last night Thabeet had 6 rebs, 4 blocks, and 6 fouls in 12 minutes.

Against JT and Tyreke's suspect finishing skills (but lord love em for trying) he'll probably foul out again but get 10 blocks...In 12 minutes.

I would like to see as our starting lineup....
PG: Beno
SF: Evans
SG: Kevin
PF: Jason
C: Hawes

Anyone agree that Beno should be pg instead of Evans?

have a bad feeling about this one... especially after knowing Iverson will also play. But we should really start Casspi tonight 'cause Rudy Gay hates playing defense and is getting light up by everyone. Nocioni better step up also

I would LOVE Beno to be the starting pg. I just love watching him play defense against other pg's. They light him up so easily, so well.

That is plain dumb. Just dumb. Beno starting? WTF. Beno should not even be CONSIDERED as a starter. Beno gets TORCHED by opposing guards.

Interesting comment by Grant on Sportsline radio show today about a possible or even not unexpected Kings starting lineup as things continue to evolve under Coach W:

C - Thompson
PF - Brockman

(w/Hawes first big man off bench)

SF - Nocioni or Casspi
SG - Martin
PG - Evans

I guarantee you that Westphal knows what he is doing. He knows this team is not set up to win in the present. So not only does he have to play mindgames with certain players (Hawes) he also knows that his success won't be gauged in W's and L's for the first half of this season. So he can afford to tinker and develop, something his 3 predecessors were too afraid to do with their job security on the line.

Hopefully, the starting lineup for tonight's game might be

C - Thompson
PF - Brockman
SF - Nocioni or Casspi
SG - Martin
PG - Evans

Off to the game.

While I respect your opinion you can have one without being insulting. I was aiming for some discussion on why Beno may be a better pg at the start of the season. I do not envision him as a final piece to this team; but, while Evans adjusts, I would like Beno to handle the ball for about 24 mins.

I am going to disagree with you on this to. Tyreke is a "final piece" for this team, so putting Beno out there hurts Tyreke's development. Also, even at this point, Tyreke is a better player. Beno had his chance, and blew it.
