Ellis Can't Play with Curry?

#1
If you think Stephen Jackson was bad, just read Monta Ellis’ comment about playing with Stephen Curry.

[. . .] They both seem to want out. Jackson went public last month with that wish. Ellis perhaps did the same by mocking an Ellis-Curry backcourt.

Jackson and Ellis eventually will leave town — the NBA is America's least loyal sport in terms of rotating rosters and coaches. Until then, there's no doubt they will play hard when asked, and they indeed can play great (just not consistently).

But they're talking like All-Stars when the Warriors haven't had one since 1997.

It's not Ellis' place to say he can't share a backcourt with Curry. Coach Don Nelson thinks they can, and he will see that one way or another soon enough.

The clip-and-save portion of Ellis' thoughts on him and Curry:

Question: "Do you envision yourself playing together in the backcourt?"

Ellis: "I can't. I can't answer that. Us together? No."

Q: "Why not?

Ellis: "Huh?"

Q: "Why not?"

Ellis: "Can't."

Q: Why?

Ellis: "Just can't."

Q: "Too small? Too similar?"

Ellis: "Just can't."

Q: (Do) you understand they say you can?

Ellis: "They say we can, but we can't."

Q: You wouldn't want to give it a shot?

Ellis: "I just want to win. That's not going to win that way."
"You can't put two small guys out there and try to play the 1 (point guard) and the 2 (shooting guard) when you've got big 2 guards (to match up with) in the league," Ellis said. "You just can't do it. Yes we're going to move up and down fast. But eventually the game is going to slow down."

Sounds reasonable "... coming from a coach, not a player who was in the franchise's doghouse a year ago for savaging his ankle in a still-mysterious off-court accident.

Is anybody still interested in trading Martin for Ellis? I hope not.

The only reason he’s saying that is because he’s pissed at the Warriors organization for drafting Curry when Ellis said he didn’t want the Warriors to draft another point guard.

well,
1) Ellis has proven to be a real pain for them; but
2) this is part of the Nellie effect here, guys are looking to dive overboard left and right; and
3) he's right. Absolutely right. Maybe you don't say it (hence the Ellis is a pain bit), but then again how much stupidity do you have to put up with as a player while just smiling and saying its all good? Playing two tiny 180lb defenseless guards together is insanity. Its not even smallball insanity -- ignoring that smallball is and has always been a failure in the win column, not even the great smallball advocates have EVER won with two mini-guards out there. Who were Don Nelson's SGs? Sidney Moncrief, Mitch Richmond, Latrell Sprewell, Sarunas Marciullonis, Michael Finley. Who were Mike D'Antoni's SGs in Phoenix? Joe Johnson, Raja Bell. Even the smallball gurus play full size backcourts.

He might be right in his assumption about two small guys playing 1 and 2…but he seems like he’s trying to find a way to pee people off. Then again I didn’t hear him talk or see the interview but it just seems like he’s been pissed at the Warriors ever since they decide to punish him for his scooter incident and he’s using this situation (and I really feel bad for Curry) to make a bigger problem for everybody.

I wonder how the season will start for the Warriors...1st Stephen Jackson wants out and then Ellis comes out and says that he can't play with Curry.

Maybe Ellis is scared that Curry will out shine him.

Either way, the Golden State Warriors are a train wreck and I'm loving every minute of it!

So Beno for Ellis..?:)
No Ellis...If Curry is a problem, I'll take him.

According to Jpdabrams's twitter page

Monta Ellis may ask out of the #Warriors too soon, via some1 in his camp. Still bitterness on both sides from the mo-ped fiasco.

This just seems unprofessional. The guy had an accident right after the team signs him to a nice contract and then he screws himself up, and he still remains upset because the Warriors org. has the nerve to punish him.

I’m no fan of the Warriors organization but this guy screws up and he’s pissed at other people  It's not even like he owned up to his mistake, he tried to go around it.

looks like the raiders finally got some competition!

as an aside.. what a douchebag... keep your mouth shut and play the game. don't criticize before you play one minute of meaningless basketball.

Monta is right on the money. The way he went about answering the questions was wrong but he's right. They are not going to win with an undersized backcourt. Neither are really "true" pgs but rather scoring ones. They both need the ball to be really effective.
The only reason Coach Nelly still has a job is because of that play-off series where they upset the Mavs. Other than that one season, that team has been mediocre.

The problem with the warriors right now is clearly Nelly. Yes, he was responsible for the thrilling season/playoffs they had a couple years ago, but right now he's clearly just there for the coaching wins record and the money. Their team will not complete this year (and maybe next) regardless of how well he coaches, so he seems to just be messing around.

The team is a complete mess right now....probably the worst run organization in the league over the last couple years. They were crazy to give nelson a contract extension, and even crazier to give Jackson more money. I've historically defended Ellis because he seemed like a nice humble kid when they first drafted him out of high school, but he's clearly matured into one of the biggest jerks in the league. Without Randolph (and maybe Curry) the team would be a complete disaster this year.

Breaking news:

According to a reliable source on a popular Kings fan forum, talks may be underway between the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings to exchange problematic point guard Beno Udrih for "I can't work with Curry" two-guard Monte Ellis.

If the trade is made, it could be the first time a team had both the Most-Improved Player and runner-up Most Improved Player on their roster at the same time.

Sources would not speculate further and Don Nelson, when reached for comment, made some gutteral noises and rather rude hand gestures.

^ I heard about this too! This is a huge win for the Warriors. They get rid of a player that doesnt want to be there and they acquire a reliable defensive stalwart point guard in Udrih. Beno brings them championship experience and a defensive identity from playing for the Spurs. The Kings lose a top tier defensive player and acquire a locker room distraction. Why Petrie....WHYYY! Petrie is showing me he CLEARLY has no plan!

Is this a confirmed source? I posit that it is pure speculation. In fact, I posted this thought on a Warriors board, and a representative from the Warriors said, "sounds good. Serves us right."
Take it for what it's worth.

The only logical answer is to double Beno's salary. Like a sign and trade. Then we could do do trade. If he makes twice as much, that will make him twice as good, right?
Damn. Now see, THOSE are the sorts of things your GM is supposed to think about ahead of time! As long as you are going to offer a long term inflated contract to someone, REALLY inflate it so that they can be swapped 1 for 1 for somebody else's disgruntled star. :p

Do we also need to get Beno on a moped? Or is that taking this too far?

Just another example of poor vision by Petrie. A true visionary would have forseen this coming..
