Kings sign Desmond Mason (merged)

#63
On KHTK, Grant said Desmond's contract wasn't guaranteed unless he makes the team. Maybe they want him for camp and the preseason to see if he still has anything. Still don't really understand this move, tho.

Grant also said he talked to Sean May at the practice facility today for about 10 minutes. Says he's in fantastic shape and you'd hardly recognize the guy. Hopefully that's true. Nice to have quite a few guys in early and working out already.

I guess I was wrong about the reasoning why we did not pursue Pavlocic.

And gee, sure is nice to see Geoff, for the 100th time in his career, make a move to directly squish our team's youth. There is not a Hedo (Jim Jackson), Gerald Wallace (Peeler), Kevin Martin (Bonzi), Hawes (Mikki), or Donte (Noc) that he doesn't delight in throwing a washed up vet in front of as an obstacle. Now its Donte/Omri. Just don't get it.

I will of course rescind this sentiment if we immediately make a move using either Noc, Cisco or Kevin. Otherwise...duh.
exactly.....

so yeah...why isn't there a blank stare emoticon. cuz that's what i'd like to emote.

also...could this be the first time in kingfans history where every poster in a thread has been in complete agreement?

that's gotta be worth something.

thanks desmond!
No, read back. I like the signing lol

Well if Sean May is honest on his twitter, he has been working his butt off all summer. Seems to be lifting and running constantly.

I can't add much to this signing. It doesn't make a lot of sense unless there's another deal in the works. I won't loose any sleep over it. The money amounts to little, so the risk is null. Just don't see the point, but hey, is something to talk about..;)

Well i dont get it trade? Westphal connection? not enough 6'7" players? 9 year guy that has a possibility of taking minutes from younger guys? Guy that provides veteran leadership at league minimum salary????? I wish I knew what Geoff is planning to do but no one knows now. So i figure i will drink some beer and just wonder.......

B A F F L E D!!!!!

GO KINGS...

If Desmond does in fact meet the requirements to make the team I hope he can actually do something different from the guys we already have. All the players that we have that play the same spots and are younger.......

GO KINGS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heh, I think this post pretty much sums up every KF.com poster's frustration. Let's hope for the best! (cough trade cough)

Westphal probably lobbied to get DM on his squad. He hustles, plays defense and is a veteran of the league. Plus there is not really a backup 2 guard on the Kings squad. DM is one more body to come in and defend the Kobe's of the league. Defending big 2's and small 3's is where the Kings miss John Salmons the most.

The current group is most likely our 09/10 squad unless a contender loses a 1 or a 3 for the season and comes shopping for Beno, Noc or Garcia.

A legitimate backup at the 2 spot.

But now we have

C - Hawes
PF - Thompson, May, Brockman, Thomas
SF - Nocioni, Greene, Casspi
SG - Martin, Garcia, Mason,
PG - Evans, Udrih, Rodriguez

A clear hole at the C position and an excess in the PF position.
Then you have Garcia who can switch to SF, Evans who may also play some at SG. And we get a probable excess in SF position.

Could this mean a Thomas+Greene(9M) or a Thomas+Nocioni(16M) for a legit big is closing in? I hope so....

I will hold my comment on this signing until January, when hopefully I won't be saying:

"I told you guys, Petrie has been trying to sabotage the Maloofs' business for several years now, or maybe we should just accept the fact that our GM really stinks and just got lucky before when he assembled that Webber/Divac team". :D

My thoughts:

Greene and Omri are seen as extremely raw. Petrie (or Westphal or both) feel that if one of Noc or Cisco gets injured during the season, we'll have practically no depth at the position due to our young players not being ready.

I'm not psyched on Greene as a prospect, unless he really is working on that D or actually starts hitting those 3s he jacks. He just doesnt seem ready. And as a low 1st round pick, we shouldnt really expect Omri to get many minutes at all, unless he really starts beastin it when he hits the floor.

Mikki and Miller taking minutes from Hawes and JT, I can understand the gripes. But thats because Hawes and JT were showing flashes of being legit players. Until Greene or Omri show those flashes my view towards adding a vet swingman to the stable is...Whatever.

Maybe...Our lineup has the potential to be pretty tall.

Roster wise it would seem to be the case though. We got a bajillion guys around 6'7, and what, two players over 6'10?

The non-guaranteed status makes more sense, but it still ties up cap space and IMO sends a bad message.

With that said, welcome to the team Desmond! It's not you, it's the situation you've walked into. I can't believe there was no contending team looking at signing him. Strange.

Martin, Garcia, Nocioni, Thomas, Udrih, and Rodriguez aren't enough for you?

9 seasons is a little more then kmarts 5... 638 games vs 309...

Nocioni, Udrich and Martin have all been in for 5 years, Cisco 4 rodriguez 3..

I was just saying the MORE DEFENSIVE vets the better.

Omri is ready. Greene has a low IQ and JT & Hawesome are the leaders of this team. No championship will be won THESE days without a real post threat. hopefully atleast one of them developes enough in 5 years.

This makes me feel a little bit better, but I am still firmly in the "WTF" category with every other poster here.

sidenote: mark this as one of those cold days in he** that everyone here agrees on an issue.
