Upon its release in June 1970, Starr's "War" became a runaway hit, and held the #1 position on the Billboard Pop Singles chart for three weeks, in August and September 1970. It replaced "Make It With You" by Bread, and was replaced by another Motown single, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Diana Ross.

Did you know the original title of "War and Peace" was "War what is it good for?"

Thank you for the clarification.

The Joker - Steve Miller Band (70s)

The top comment on the youtube video is from a user named haj890 who says "Steve Miller is one of the most underrated musicians of all time." Hyperbole, yes, but I like the sentiment. Went back and forth on this pick but I couldn't imagine having a group of songs from the 70s without this one. Says Allmusic of Miller's 1973 album of the same name: "The Joker isn't mind-expanding, it's party music, filled with good vibes, never laying a heavy trip, always keeping things light, relaxed and easygoing." Sounds like a good addition to the island rotation to me.

More, from allmusic and wikipedia.

AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I truly thought that one was safe for a while, especially since most of you weren't even born when it was popular!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

I knew I'd have to worry about KG4 in this draft, but now I know I'm going to have to dig deeper to secure some of my favorite songs from back then. I hate you...but I applaud your parents for their excellent taste in music.

Groove is in the Heart: Deee-Lite (90's)

Just a funky, eclectic dance song thats fun to listen to. Plus it features one of my favorite rappers; QTip. I can vividly remember going to the Davis Graduate (is that place still around?) as a 17 year old HS senior and this song set the place off, and that was 6 years after its release.

Tremendous pick... Deee-lite had everything a club band could ever want yet only one big single; this is an absolutely fun song to hear... I mean with lines like "I'm gonna go to Horton hears a who-who... sing it baby!" how can you not openly or secretly love this song?

I think it is about time for a change of pace....

PSYCH!!

More 90's... more Seattle... two Cornells and two Vedders in three songs - now that is a bargain!

Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden - 90's

My 12 and 13-year old students know and love this song. It's pretty popular in general, and classic rock seems to be experiencing a pretty big revival with kids.

Back in the 70s this song got more air time than almost anything else I can recall for a while... And if you've never heard it (which I guess might be possible), it's not one of your regular everyday 70s rock tunes. But it is a song whose lyrics I still remember, and I can even remember where I was and who I was with the first time I heard it. A lankmark song IMHO that is often overlooked...

Aqualung - Jethro Tull - 70s

Well those drifters days are past me now, I've got so much more to think about
Deadlines and commitments, what to leave in, what to leave out
I think this is one song I can't leave out. I would have thought it was a '70s song, but sure enough it was released in April of 1980. My selection: Bob Seger's Against The Wind.

Let's see... what direction to go...

I think I will stick with the 70's to pick up a gospel/folk song... but not just any gospel/folk song... I am selecting what is one of the greatest songs of all-time. A true classic. Recorded and performed by top artists time and time again; heck, even Elvis sang a version of this tune. Won four grammys as a song and five grammy's for the album. I select:

Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel from 1970.

Nice one. The marching band played that one often in college so I came to know it well.
