Kenny Thomas trade speculation thread...

#1
With KT's expiring contract, it's bound to come up again and it already has a few times. So here's a place to discuss potential deals.

#2
Utah:

Nocinoni + Kenny for AK-47

Gives Utah salary relief and gives the Kings an upgrade at small forward and that shot blocker we all want.

#3
NYK:

Kenny Thomas + Greene for Eddy Curry + ? (pick?)

NYK gets rid of Curry and frees up some cash for the offseason plus they get a cheap prospect
SAC gets a big, meaty backup center and a draft pick?

New Jersey:

Not sure this makes any sense on NJ's side unless they hate Harris, but

Devin Harris for K9 works financially.

EDIT: Maybe the motivation to get rid of some "bad" contracts would motivate them:

Harris + Najera + Yi for Garcia + K9

Charlotte

Wallace + Vlad Rad for K9 + Nocioni

Kings have to swallow V Rad and get an upgrade at SF. Bobcats get a solid SF and cap space.

Watch the Kings Waive/Buy Out Kenny Thomas at the deadline. I'm not familiar with the rules on that, but who wouldn't be surprised if the "King of All Movable Pieces" doesn't get traded?

I wish...

I think we would need to throw in a point guard because the Bobcats are facing the possibility of Felton leaving them. Which isn't that bad because they have Augustine. Either way... I want Wallace on the team!

It will be exciting to see what we really do with this contract... It would have been a complete waste of the last few years if we dont move him somehow.

We'll see what teams are sellers this year ..

That would not surprise me. What if Kenny Thomas played well this coming season and the Kings resigned him to a 6 mil 5 year contract! haha!

Well if you waive him, you still have to pay him and he counts against your cap. A buy out doesn't make sense for the Kings or for Kenny. The only way to save money with a buyout is to spread it out over more years than the natural length of the contract. Since KT is a free agent at the end of the year, theres no reason to extend his stay on the books by spreading it out.

Trading him shouldn't (finally) be a problem. There will be a lot of teams looking to unload contracts for expiring ones.

Umm, just the opposite. If they trade him it better be a lopsided deal where we are getting an all star or some decent draft picks.

This is the type of contract everyone has been saying we trade for. Now people want to trade him for crap?

Let him expire unless your trading with a team thats doing a salary dump and your getting an all star in return or at least a starter within your 5 year plan with all star potential.

If they do a payment plan it's still off the cap. But usually the buy out is for less than the amount left on the contract. Maybe the Kings save a million.

Take a deep breath.

I think you guys need to look at some reruns of old Kings games. Take up golf or something that will distact you until the season starts.
The season's still a few months off. I don't think Thomas will get traded until the trade deadline when some teams will be jockying for cap space.
Anyway this obsession with getting rid of KT now just isn't going to happen yet IMHO.

Go ask Geoff "the snail" Petrie.;)

I'll go one step beyond that, and say...
June 2010: Kenny for $8M of regained payroll budget

What you can get with expirings are usually vets with mediocre to downright unpleasant contracts. We need those like a hole in the head, so it's likely that the only trade offers we'll get for Kenny will be ones we should reject.

Very few of our players have retired as Kings, but I think Kenny just might become an exception. Not that he deserves it.

I agree. But at this point, a buyout doesn't make any sense for KT, and last time I checked, he would have to agree with it. He's due around 8mil for the last year of his contract. Why would he want to take less? Now if there were three years remaining, then it would make sense for him and the Kings. If he were to agree to it, the Kings could save money out of pocket this year by spacing out the payments, but the total amount of the buyout would still apply to this years cap, if I read it correctly. It just seems like a lot of work for maybe a million in savings over the next few years.

After the trade deadline if he takes 1 million off the contract, he can make that up if he can sign on with a team for the rest of the year.

Even if the Kings saved a million, they would have to turn around and fill the roster spot. That would cost them almost as much as what they would be saving, making the whole deal a wash. It just wouldn't make sense for the Kings or KT.

Close. Actually the vet min for KT is like 1.3 mil. A rookie is just under .5 mil. So if they buy him out minus the vet mil then add a rookie they still save around 800k.
