The Last Band(s) Standing - Final results

My contribution to TDOS is an elimination thread in which any board member can play at any time. The only limitation is that each member can only post once a day in this thread. When you post, you give a +1 to one band/solo artist and a -1 to one. The format needs to remain the same with each post. Simply copy the list of bands, paste to your post, note at the top which band gets a +1 and which gets a -1 and adjust the number in front of the bands accordingly.

If a band gets to 0, they are removed from the list. The last band standing is the winner.

The actual list of bands was a lot tougher to refine than I thought, so I am sorry if I missed your favorite. I tried to include the most popular acts of the last four decades or so, but there is no way they can all be included.

Erm...why the entire list rock and R&B and then there's Nas? I mean, sure this board had about 2 people who liked rap last year (dime, where are you bud?) but the genre could have been a little better represented on there. How about some Tupac, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Wu Tang, Tribe Called Quest, hell even Jay Z.

Either flesh out the rap on there or take off Nas now, as he's obviously going down and in a hurry. No sense wasting time.

example: as much as i love the deftones (i don't think it would be outrageous to think of myself as the biggest 'tones fan in the greater sac area, and that's sayin' somethin'), they don't really have any business being on this list. i think they're an incredibly awesome alt-metal band that should be heard by more ears, but in terms of the "most popular acts of the decade," the deftones fall very short of, say, pearl jam, rage, and soundgarden. the 'tones are important, and, dare i say, revolutionary within their genre, but their worth will be measured years from now. at the moment, though, i don't think they fit...

Couldn't agree more. Its sort of similar to the odd inclusion of just a single rapper. Deftones is probably the other odd man out, being the only alt/nu-metal act on the entire list. If they are going to stay, wheres the other (extremely more popular, though admittedly probably not as good) alt-metal acts of the early 00s? KoRn, System of a Down, Disturbed, Incubus, and god-forbid Slipknot, Papa Roach, and Limp Bizkit (don't put those on there ).

What about the predecessors to the genre, most notably Faith No More?

I've already voiced my grievance over the odd inclusion of a single rapper in the entire bunch (at least it was a really, really good one) but I also find it odd that some huge names in classic rock were skipped. Rush stands right out, and it seems to me that the Velvet Underground should be on there somewhere, though I'm sure they would not last too long.

I included Deftones for you Padrino and because they are from Sac, I figured that might help them against the bigger bands. Funny that you guys do not consider Outkast or PE representative of the hip hop genre. Looking back, Aerosmith probably should have been included. It can be fun if we do not take it too seriously.

Seems like that will be a very big number... and then if there is a "quarrel" among two posters on the merits of a band.... yikes.

Look now long it is taking just to eliminate Nas without any dissenting opinion.

Some modification is going to be necessary eventually?

Yeah I thought about that too. I'd be surprised if this even finishes. I find a lot of people (myself included) lose interest in these after a while

Speaking only for myself, my grievance is more along the lines of them not being sufficiently representative of the hip hop genre.

only way to avoid that would be saying that you can only vote for/against a band once, but then the thread might peter out before anything was resolved.

I already apologized for not including every great band. The list is about the right size and let's just go with it. I included Deftones for you Padrino and because they are from Sac, I figured that might help them against the bigger bands. Funny that you guys do not consider Outkast or PE representative of the hip hop genre. Looking back, Aerosmith probably should have been included. It can be fun if we do not take it too seriously.

ha, well i can appreciate that. seems then like the deftones will last awhile because most are simply unfamiliar with their music, and will use their -1 on a band they may not like but are familiar with. eventually, though, people will just think to themselves, "who the eff are these guys?" and slash the 'tones from the list...



there's definitely a gang-up factor that i'm noticing in this game, too. nas has been steadily declining, and i'm not talkin' 'bout his career. i think that snowball effect has less to do with the fact that illmatic is the only good album he's ever made, and more to do with the fact that, after the first couple of -1's, people see nas as easy to eliminate...

i don't know if that's something that necessarily needs to be "fixed." but it also doesn't necessarily reflect nas' true popularity on this board if he's being snowballed outta the game so soon...

To paraphrase Kornheiser, they probably wouldn't know who Nas was if he was standing in front of them, wearing a t-shirt that said "I'm Nas" on it.

Exactly. Was he put on there as a practice, just to see how quickly an act could get eliminated? I really can't see any other reason for there to be just one rapper on the whole damn thing. (Outkast is not a rapper...lol)
