Just wondering about the trade rumors floating around and what the fans here think.

The trades for Odom and Marion assume KT is the filler. For the other trade, assume he goes by himself. The rest are self-explanatory.

i picked not sure at this point. because ron is a heck of a player at a bargin price. but the man needs to learn how to control his emotions a little better. im open to a re-sign just as much as im open to trading him if the right deal comes along.

I'm going with the option that includes a pick and/or young player with expiring filler. The Odom and Marion trades do nothing for our future prospects. Either would likely walk at the end of the year, just as would Artest if he remained on the roster, since we're not in a position to be giving a massive extension to a 30-ish player. Getting Thomas off the books a year earlier is nice for the Maloofs pocketbook, but we're looking at more flexibility the summer his deal expires anyway.

What either the Odom or Marion trades do immediately are to address the Artest headcase problem, and probably make us temporarily better for one year. Neither is a horrible situation, but at the end of the day what are we left with other than probably a worse draft position and possibly delaying finding out what Jason Thompson can do. Either could be mid-year trade fodder, but once again we'd be hoping to get back some long term piece (pick or young player), so we come back to the option I chose.

My first choice would have been "Ron Artest for a future order of garlic fries and a drink to be named later." Since that wasn't available, I opted for the same as my friend NME. (And have I mentioned, BTW, how nice it is to have you back among us?)

:p

Yep...picks and youth/potential/expirings...all the Marion/Odom trades do for us is bring a big name to town. They don't do anything for us in the long term.

True. If anything, Petrie has shown that he doesn't have the cojones to swing a player like Marion or Odom mid-season after just receiving them. If he trades for a vet, it seems likely that it's someone he sees as part of the team for some time. I'm guessing that he's holding out for picks/youth, like the Bibby trade. At least there, he took a gamble on Williams in the hopes that he would fit the team long term.

I could be wrong.

The Miami rumor is totally and completely bogus, it has to be. Why would the heat give up Marion for Artest and throw away good cap space? And then on top of that bring him under a rookie coach?

I went with the Marion option. I'd be happy with any of the top three options - Odom, Marion, or Pick-N-A-Kid - but I'd like to see what we can do with a Hawes-Thompson-Marion-Martin lineup.

I'd also be more willing to bring Marion back than I would Odom. Under the assumption that Marion can be had for about $15M/year (may not quite be reasonable) then we might...

1) Dump Salmons for enders
2) Resign Garcia as a backup for $4-5M/year

...and look like this in the offseason of 2010:

Udrih (6), Singletary (1)
Martin (11)
Marion (15), Garcia (4-5)
Thompson (2)
Hawes (3)
'09 first rounder (2)
'10 first rounder (no need to sign immediately)

Giving us 8(+1) players under contract at about $45M, leaving $15M+ in cap space for a big free agent - either a PG or a big man. Seems like a nice scenario. Only problems are that Marion would be taking a bit of a pay cut to do that (will he do that?) and he'll be 32 in 2010 (= on his way down).

I'm fine with any of the 1st 3 options. I like both Marion/Odom, Odom's a bit younger and a bit of a better fit for us IMO, but I'd take either one of them considering they're huge expirings which would give us some cap room this summer probably. It'd be nice to get a good young player or picks too though. Like I'd take Mahinmi+1st+expirings from SA. Or I'd take Brooks/1st/BJax from Houston too(maybe, I kinda like Singletary more though). So really I like all 3 options. Just want to see him traded because this relationship is past the point of no return basically.

how about a 3 way trade with the lakers and hawks....

kings trade
artest
moore
williams

kings receive
josh smith s&t for contract similar to martins
zaza (expiring)

hawks trade
smith
zaza

hawks receive
odom
ariza

lakers trade
odom
mihm

lakers receive
artest
moore
williams

i added moore instead of thomas to make it more appealing for the lakers... no one wants thomas and moore might be more useful as bynums backup... he's a hustle player and the lakers need that since turiaf is gone...

Marion may be a bum who ruined a perfectly good title shot in Phoenix and too old for a rebuilding team, but for Artest/KT he's great value. If we could get him now that would be a coup--ship him at the trade deadline, see if you can get something in a sign and trade, or just let him walk, it's all good. If you want prospects and low draft picks, then you can still deal Miller and/or Salmons. But getting a player of Marion's caliber (or Odom, to a lesser degree) while dumping Ron's headache and Kenny's contract is too good to pass up.

May be too good to be true, too. But we'll see.

Would one person please explain to me why on Earth would Miami ever do that trade? Why would they blow 9 million dollars of cap space next year so Artest can play under a rookie coach and be a bad influence on Beasley?

Stupidity? Too much cervesa? Hanging out with Brad too much? Intertainment value? And lastly, total reversal of the indian graveyard curse.

This is not a trade thread - let's keep it to the point. Future detailed trade ideas will be deleted from this thread - they have a place to be already.

I went with the Ron and KT for Odom option. With Odom's contract soon expiring we wouldn't be stuck with him if he didn't mesh with the team. Plus, anything that involves KT sounds really good to me!

Although I do love chips. :p

We are also missing the option to resign Ron and give him dual (quadrual..er..) player/coach/GM/team president duties so that we can more thoroughly bask in the radiance of his Ronness.

I decalre this poll rigged.

I did the best I could with the options. ;) Should I add ballboy as one of his duties as well? :p

I went with the draft pick and filler. I don't want Lamar or Marion or anybody that may hinder our young bigs from getting better. I'd take a 3pt specialist like Kapono or something.

I think you made a big mistake in not including " Crown him 'He Who Shall Be Worshipped and Cheered No Matter What New Lamearse Comment He Makes to the Press' "

;)
