Green Jello were a lot of fun live. Caught them opening for Gwar in 90 or 91 and later for Testament (which seemed odd, but whatever). I remember "The Box" too, though I'm surprised "Three Little Pigs" beat out "Me So Horny" or "You Got What I Need" based on how often I remember those two being played back to back to back to back.

I caught them live here at what used to be BoJangles in Sac in 1993, got to basically sit on the edge of the stage most of the night.

I think it was The Crest where I saw them.

Bo Jangles is not around anymore? I loved that place when it was The Cattle Club half the week, saw so many cool bands there (along with many more really not cool ones and some local ones I don't really care for that went on to become huge nationally). The last time I was there it had reverted back to being a mostly exclusively gay dance club but I didn't realize it disappeared and I was in that neighborhood last time I was in Sac.

And here is where I probably start wandering off the beaten path (at least with the group selecting here). I have some other selections that may be chosen out from underneath me, but I want to start getting the main albums I need to have with me in the VERY off chance someone else may venture that direction. Given the choices taken so far, I'd probably be safe betting that they wouldn't be; heck I bet less than half probably have any of these or any interest in many of them anyways (or even heard of them). :p But I don't mind losing out on a few of the ones I listen to less often if it means including these:

Sara Evans - Born to Fly (2000)

I hated country music for years, but a steady drumbeat of my friends listening to it in post-high school life corrupted me, I guess, and now I have a steady diet of it.

Anyways, I think Sara Evans has an amazing voice and this album showcases it wonderfully. A couple cover songs better than the originals and lots of original tunes that I never get sick of. Great stuff.

From allmusic:

Born to Fly emphasizes the more contemporary sounds on the recording, while placing some of the rootsy bluegrass back in the mix. She does this with the confidence and authority of a seasoned veteran who is in control of her work.

The standout cuts are the playful title track and first single, "Born to Fly," with its fiddles, Dobros, and mandolins; the nostalgic ballad "I Learned That from You," with its whinnying pedal steel; and covers of Edwin McCain's "I Could Not Ask for More" and the closer, a reading of Hornsby's gently choogling back-porch love song "Every Little Kiss." Evans moved to the top of the charts again with this one, and was able to go four deep for singles, solidifying her place at the beginning of the 21st century.
From wiki:

In 2000, Evans worked on a third album to be released later that year. Born to Fly was released to stores on October 10, 2000, and later became another major-selling album. She insisted on hiring Seattle-based rock drummer Matt Chamberlain (The Wallflowers, Edie Brickell), who brought a slightly different sound to her music.[3] The album became Evans' first album to receive a Platinum rating by the RIAA, and spawned four country hits, including the title track ("Born to Fly") written by Evans and Nashville veterans Marcus Hummon and Darrell Scott. The first single released from the album, the song reached the #1 spot on the country charts, and was Evans's first #1 as a solo artist. Hits continued from the album all the way into 2002. The second single, "I Could Not Ask for More", was released in 2001, the Country version of Edwin McCain's big Pop-Rock hit from the year before. Evans' version reached #2 on the Billboard Country Chart and reached #32 on the Billboard Hot 100, ironically an even bigger Pop hit then McCain's version on Billboard's Hot 100 (McCain's version reached #37). In 2002, the songs continued to be released from the album, "Saints & Angels" and "I Keep Looking" were the last two singles released from the album. "I Keep Looking" reached No. 5 and "Saints & Angels" reached #16. In 2004, the Born to Fly album was officially certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.

In 2001, Evans was the most-nominated artist at the Country Music Association awards with seven nominations overall, and she won her first CMA award when "Born to Fly" won the award for Video of the Year, her first major award from Country music.
Oh, yeah, and she is one of those mature woman (not 18 and half-starved twig) hotties, as well. ;)

This draft fascinates me; I fully expected for there to be albums that I haven't listened to, but I'm surprised by how many artists/bands there are that I've never even heard of. Interestingly enough, most of them are being picked by two people, as there are, to this point, eight artists/bands I'd never heard of (counting Warhawk's most recent pick) before this draft, and Proph and pdx combine for six of them; the eighth is the aforementioned Chris Brown.

But, what really shocks me is, as someone who (at this phase of my life) listens to R&B, Funk and hip-hop almost to exclusivity, that I am more familiar with Spike's playlist than I am with dime dropper's.

Nice pick, Warhawk. I actually saw Sara Evans with my former spouse at Feather Falls casino. What I remember most was the terrible sound system that Feather Falls provided. There was some gnarly feedback. It was a tad grating at times, but she put on a great performance, nonetheless.

Oh, and yes, she is beautiful. :D

Wait until my 16th-20th round picks. I guarantee you haven't heard of them. Also, I think that in the first ten rounds, people are picking their favorite albums that they know others are aware of. I'm sure the second half of the draft will have some awfully obscure stuff.

I've heard of nearly every artist mentioned so far as well, including Warhawk's latest pick and Chris Brown. Proph's and pdx's picks are the only ones that have left me scratching my head (and running a Pandora search for  ).

I don't know if it still is around, I don't do much club hopping these days. It was actually a Cattle Club night now that you mention it. The concert was Feb 15, 1993. The members of the band were cool people to talk to.

I can't remember ever getting a printed ticket to a show there, besides when my brother was playing there. How can you remember that date and yet I can't remember the date of the show I went to 2 months ago (which was X, incidentally ::)

i'll just follow warhawk's example and start going off in random directions. :p

and the first musical entry in the draft:

les miserables - original broadway cast 1987

by far my favorite musical on broadway, so much so tat i've seen it twice there and once in toronto. the story, cast, and songs are SUPERB. my island would not be complete without this album.

from wiki:

Les Misérables, colloquially known as Les Mis or Les Miz, is a musical composed in 1980 by the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg with a libretto by Alain Boublil. Sung through, it is perhaps the most famous of all French musicals and one of the most performed musicals worldwide. On October 8, 2006, the show celebrated its 21st anniversary and became the longest-running West End musical in history and is still running (though it has changed venues).[1]
Among the most famous songs of this Tony award-winning musical are "I Dreamed a Dream", "One Day More", "A Heart Full of Love", "Do You Hear the People Sing?", and "On My Own."
The musical is based on the 1862 novel Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. Set in early 19th Century France, it follows the intertwining stories of a cast of characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. The characters include a paroled convict named Jean Valjean who, failing attempts to find work as an honest man with his yellow ticket of leave, breaks his parole and conceals his identity; the police inspector Javert who becomes obsessed with finding Valjean; Fantine, the single mother who is forced to become a prostitute to support her daughter; Marius, a French student who falls in love with Valjean's adopted daughter Cosette; the Thénardiers, the unscrupulous innkeepers who thrive on cheating and stealing; Gavroche, a young beggar boy; Éponine, their young daughter who is hopelessly in love with Marius; and student leader Enjolras who plans the revolt to free the oppressed lower classes of France. The main characters are joined by an ensemble that includes prostitutes, student revolutionaries, factory workers, and others.

So... yeah... that X pick got me all shook up about the safety of the rest of my list, and has left me quite on edge. As a result, I've done some shuffling and will now be taking an album that I'd originally intended to take much later. Now that I've shuffled, however, if ______'s _____ _______ is the next to go, I'm going to have a friggin' heart attack.

That being said, my pick for the 8th round is:

Devo -- Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! (1978)
-- Plastic-hatted weirdness is a requirement of Gadget's island. As such, I knew that Devo would be making the trip in some fashion, but it took me a while to figure out which album to bring -- all of my favorite songs are scattered throughout their early work. However, I finally decided that it's always best to start at the beginning, and decided to pick up their first US release (which came out in an absolutely fantastic year, for the record) despite the fact it lacks their biggest and most recognizable hit. Their cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Jocko Homo" are still great party songs, and (the less than PC titled) "Mongoloid" has always been a personal favorite of mine.

Yeah, I saw that, too. As everyone should know by know, wikipedia is not unlike the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in that it contains much which is apocryphal.

Whenever there is doubt about the accuracy of a wikipedia entry (as there, frankly, should be about all wikipedia entries), always check an independent source. In this case, the independent source was cia.gov, which recognizes Elizabeth II as the official head of state... Call me a government lapdog, but I'll take the CIA's word for it over some entry on wikipedia that can literally be edited by anybody with internet access...

Next pick...

Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill (1986)

Gotta have some variety in my collection, and while I was really tempted to go with a couple of other Beastie albums, I had to go with how it all started. Think about what this band did...went from a late 70's/early 80's punk band, put out a #1 rap album, and stayed relevant by combining the two genres for the better part of 2 decades. They were also responsible for some pretty cool videos. Great band, great album.

Earth, Wind and Fire - That's the Way of the World - 1975

I'd considered taking a live album here, since my favorite EWF song (September) was never officially released on any studio album. But, truth be told, I'm not a big fan of live recordings. I had selected their Greatest Hits Live album in a different draft, but now I regret it; I'd rather just go with this album, a solid production that was a former #1 album, and comes in at 493 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 albums list... and it doesn't hurt that it also has my second-favorite EWF song, either.

I despise the Beastie Boys with a burning passion. I would rather have 19 CDs and 1 shiny coaster for my coconut tea than include them on my island. :p

Wow...and I was SO good about keeping my mouth shut about Last of the Mohicans and The Matrix in the other thread...
