Wow Slim, you'd skip the Midway, the Zoo, Sea World, or the Aerospace Museum???:p
If you'd been around the Loma Lodge in late-95/early-96, you'd skip that stuff to go there, too... ;)

Besides, I don't like the beach and I don't get much into touristy stuff; when I was younger, I wanted to go where the action was... and believe me, there was much action for a young single man to be had at the Loma in '95... especially on a duty-free weekend... ;)

I lived right behind bookstar for a year and right behind the 7-11 on midway for a year across the street from target on midway.

Things to do in SD

The normal things to do would be go to the beach, visit the zoo...

One of my favorite parts of living in San Diego is the dining. There are a couple of restaurants you might want to hit up. Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest has the best pizza I've ever had outside of New York. It is a little hole in the wall which serves thin-crust slices of heaven. For 2 slices and a soda, the cost is $6...can't go wrong! If you're going to be around in the evening, check Extraordinary Desserts in Bankers Hill. Aside from Rick's Dessert Diner in Sacramento, this place has the best desserts around.

For drinking, there are a number of options. One of my favorite places is the PB Bar and Grill (in Pacific Beach). If you're in town on Tuesday night (the 24th) you'll get to experience "Taco Tuesday" ($1.75 tacos and $2.00 Margaritas or Mexican Beers). If you're still in town on Thursday night, head out to the South Park Bar and Grill. There is a really nice jazz jam session that a lot of great players come out to blow at.

Have fun!

An upscale cocktail bar(not club) and pub. Again I do not want a place that has a dance floor. Thanks for the suggestions guys please continue.
Oops--I probably should have read this first. PB Bar and Grill might not be for you. Also on Tuesday Nights--there is a jazz jam session at an upscale downtown bar called "The Onyx Room". The session features the best players from as far as LA. Gilbert Castellanos is the emcee and leader of the house band (http://www.onyxroom.com/) (http://www.gilbertcastellanos.com/). It has a "dance floor" but in a completely separate portion of the club...and dancing doesn't take place on Tuesday Nights.

Hmm, not sure if the PB Bar and Grill is what you're looking for. It's generally geared toward the 20 something college crowd, but still is a quality laid back hangout if that's what you'd like.

I think you might like to check out the Altitude Sky Bar --http://www.altitudeskybar.com/ It's on top of the Marriot Hotel on K Street in the Gaslamp Quarter. It offers a great panaromic view of Downtown San Diego and, as the site boasts, was ranked one of the top 25 best bars in the world by Conde' Nast. Get there early though because the line can get rather long.

Gaslamp is probably the best bet for the cocktails you're looking for, but there are great places to eat in the same area. Some of my personal favorites include the Oceanaire http://www.theoceanaire.com/ which mimics a 1930's ocean liner.

Also the Fish Market on North Harbor http://www.thefishmarket.com/locations_details.asp?id=6 right along side the USS Midway and the Star of India with some of the best views of all of San Diego.

And then there's The Field http://www.thefield.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/events.woa a literal Irish Pub ... meaning the building was brought over brick by brick from Ireland.

If you're in a sporty mood Seau's in Mission Valley http://www.seau.com/
is one of the very best around this side of the ESPN Zone.

And as a night cap, check out Extraordinary Desserts in Hillcrest right next to Balboa Park http://www.extraordinarydesserts.com/locations.htm Of course, this is another really popular one you'd might like to get to early.

Altitude is especially cool when a Padres game is happening (despite being kind of a pretentious place).
