New arena plan will be done by start of next season.

I totally missed this...but I must say I'm a bit more optimistic now that I see that the private funding end of things picking up steam in the whole plan, thats the only way anything will ever work. I think this is definetely good news for a change...

(CBS13) SACRAMENTO CBS13 News has learned of new details of a new plan to build an arena for the Sacramento Kings.

A high ranking NBA official tells CBS13 that the NBA wants to accelerate its pursuit of a new arena in Sacramento. They want something ready to sign in just 6 months.

The Maloof brothers and NBA commissioner David Stern are working on a new arena plan they hope will be in place by the start of next season. CBS13 has learned that NBA negotiators set that timeline themselves.

The new financing negotiations include partners that were not involved in the publicly funded Railyard Arena proposal that failed in the November elections.

Sacramento Supervisor Roger Dickenson says that at this point the new plan would likely fall heavily on private investors.

“I don’t think anyone right now is contemplating any direct public funding being part of the equation,” he says.

In addition the new timeline, CBS13 has learned that the Maloof brothers have hosted several dinner parties for Sacramento community and business leaders where they’ve announced they’re expecting a draft of the plan by Davis Stern by the end of this month.

Sandy Smoley was a guest at one of those dinners.

“Joe Maloof and Gavin Maloof have looked me in the eye too many times and have said ‘we are staying in Sacramento’. At each of these dinners they stood up in front of the public and said ‘we are staying in Sacramento’. I have to believe them,” says Smoley.

Now that has to be one of the few bright spots of this season.

I especially like the "new plan would likely fall heavily on private investors" part. Bleep the bleeping city and county.

Still no word on if this would be at the Railyards, Natomas or somewhere else.

The Kings (meaning the Maloofs) never liked the idea of the railyards anyway. My strong hunch would be a location very close to the existing Arco.

Honestly, a new arena for this city would mean much more to me than a NBA title. I carry my avatar around here for a reason. It is something I feel strongly about.

So yes, VF, this would be one very, very bright spot to an otherwise dismal season. I really hope that things work out because if they do not the whole city will lose out for many different reasons.

And my attitude is basically bleep the city. I would find it wonderful and delightful if the Kings built their new arena in Yolo County, right across the river from Sacramento but I'm probably just a bit spiteful. The idea the city wants to derive all the benefits of a new arena without having to contribute to it just galls the heck out of me.

I always liked the idea of it being in the railyard because I think it would benefit the city and remove an eyesore, but whatever.

As long as they're staying in the area I don't really care. (If West Sac is good enough for the Rivercats, it's good enough for the Kings. ;))

Easy there VF. I think that arena supporters are doing there best to put last fall behind us. There was plenty of blame to go around in the he said, she said debacle we all experienced.

Looking forward, I would really, really like the arena to be in the rail yards I would be happy to help pay for it. While I am at it, I am also happy to help pay for the American River Parkway upkeep and light rail expansion. However, I am in the minority.:( It looks to be up to the private investors at this point, so best of luck to them.

I have always thought that MSE wanted to stay where they are, as they have the practice facility and parking and freeway access in place. They will probably look to put it where the baseball diamond was going to be....

I just hope that one of these decades light rail makes it out there....

OTOH, putting it in West Sac would be cool, too, but I think there would be way too much work to do so.

Yeah, at this point, I really dont care where they put this thing, as long as it keeps the team here in Sacramento! If MSE pulls this off, that will go a VERY long way to patching up their image with 'casual' fans that think they just 'want to move to Vegas' so bad. I cant wait to see what this new plan is...especially because of the private investors end of things. I wonder if anyone will leak the first draft of this in a month, when they said it should be done by?

If the city isn't involved, I suspect the chances of a leak are significantly less. And that's fine with me. Private businesses shouldn't have to conduct their business dealings in public.

I'm simply voicing my opinion. Based on the grand jury report, it seems there are still those who want to make it appear as though the Maloofs are the bad guys, even though they're been pretty open and honest throughout this entire process.

I still carry a grudge against the elected officials of Sacramento City and County because they tried to turn this whole thing into something it wasn't ever meant to be and I think that's dishonest and unfair to everyone who lives, works or even just passes through Sacramento County. The people deserve much better.

Hey, I'm all for that! Oh, and I'm with you in your grudge against our elected officials for what they've done with this situation...but in the long run, it hopefully will work out for the better. I dont think you can blame a couple of them for trying, at least...i.e., Dickenson and Fong. But Dave Jones and his leisure suit can go to hell, as far as I'm concerned.

I think we're humming the same tune.

I gave up hope on the Railyards. Even though that appears to be moving forward, there are just too much in infrastructure costs before they even consider an arena. I think for the sake of the Railyards and a new arena, both should be kept as far away from each other as possible. If they can build it next to Arco with mostly private funding and property donations, that's fine with me. At some point the city is going to have to get public money for the railyard development. Then the public will figure out that it wasn't the arena that was going to suck up all the money, it was the infrastructure costs buried within the deal.

While I'd much prefer it downtown, right across the river next to Raley Field would be fantastic as well.

I am so hoping for this to work out. I don't care where the arena is, altho next to the current Arco makes the most sense. I just want a good arena for Sacramento events and I want my team here for a long, long time. Oh please, please, please, please, please.

I think you speak the mantra of EVERY Kings fan, Kenna.:) Just get it done, dammit, I love my team!

I'm sorry, but I don't understand this thinking. Isn't the goal to get a ring first, then watch everything else fall into place? This franchise hasn't had a ring since 1951. Maybe a new arena will attract more talent to want to stay and play in Sacramento, I dunno. I still think the first goal should always be winning the championship.

#1 The arena issue is an issue that transcends basketball for this community.

#2 Winning a title will do little or nothing to secure an arena deal.

Ding Ding.

Good news, and I can't wait to here more about it. Hopefully it'll be done by the time I move back to California. ;)

The "arena issue" is meaningless without the Kings. The city/county has already shown themselves to be totally incompetent in coming up with a plan for a suitable facility to meet the needs of Sacramento now and in the future.

The ONLY hope of Sacramento is for the Maloofs/Stern to find a way to get the job done despite the bozos in city hall.

It's too bad that the railyard idea was undermined by everybody involved. It could have given the city of Sacramento a brighter future. Unfortunately, the Sacramento political and newspaper scene is dominated by people who lack vision. I don't think the Maloofs are blameless either, as they torpedoed the railyard from the start, but the city could have rammed it home and forced them to move downtown.

Hopefully a deal gets done to keep the team in the region, and we can build a baseball stadium downtown. I've always maintained that Sacramento is a baseball town anyway.

Baseball is boring. I don't see how baseball would be better than/as good as the Kings. Baseball is an inferior sport.

The city can't force anything, if they aren't willing to put up a big chunk of the funding. What the Maloofs found out, is NOTHING is going to be built downtown, until the city comes up with the money promised to the developer for infrastructure improvements. Right now, the city is absolutely clueless about how they are going to come up with that money.

So it could still be years before anything gets built downtown. The Kings can't wait years or for totally indefinite time frame.
