Not very shocking to me, both of the VFTW contestants were eliminated and Jared was not particularly great chanelling Alfonso Ribiero either. Considering that 25% of the remaining contestants go home this week there was bound to be one bordeline "surprise" and I had Sabrina slightly ahead of Stephanie and Haley in the back of the diva group but still behind the other powerful lady singers. Gina is in her own category and should be safe until they get down to 8 or so.

I am rather shocked that Sabrina went home and dissappointed that Sundace left. I can't believe I have to suffer through another Sunjayah performace. I do believe Sunjayah is getting a lot of the votes from overseas. It's great that he has support but it's not doing him any favors.

Antonella has already had offers from Girls Gone Wild to host a video and Playoby and other Adult Entertainment venues. SURPRISE SURPRISE. Something tells me we haven't seen the last of her.

Go Melinda!!!! You are the chosen one my dear. Just keep those shoulders back, head up and a smile on your face. You deserve to be there.

Yes, I knew Sanjaya would be around longer than most would think so. He might even be around another few weeks, but I think the guys are going to get picked off one-by-one now.

Antonella is absolutely stunning. She could have a career...Doing something.

And I'm beyond angry that Sundance got voted off instead of Sunjaya...As Simon said it's a singing competition.

Oh well, I'm going to call it...Sundace will be this year's Chris Daughtry.

I think Brandon is the next to go...But I bet with some studio time he can be morphed into a Shaggy type of a singer...He has a voice that is pretty unique, albeit not a great one.

GO BLAKE!

:D :D :D

My biggest surprise is that Sabrina is gone. She was Top 12 material, and so was Jared. They were not one of the best, but they were better than the one's that went home. What can you say abaot Sanjay. The only thing is the longer he stays, the more transformation you will see....kind of like Michael Jackson.

Overall, this group of 12 is decent. Not overwhelming especially on the male side. My predicted Top 2 is Melinda and Lakisha.

I agree that they were both better than some who are left but its inevitable that on this night some real talent leaves because they cut 4 out of 16 contestants. You really have to make sure you standout for the final semi-final performance and only about 4 contestants actually rose to that challenge, Sabrina while very talented, wasn't one of those 4.

I don't understand the Sundance love. He should have never even been in the voting rounds so his elimination doesn't bug me. Sanjaya will go home in due time but he at least deserved to be in these rounds based on what they showed of him during Hollywood week. Sundance basically put up a great audition and has stunk ever since and he's been VFTW's poster boy every week.

In case anybody missed the big announcement:

American Idol, being the galactic super power that it is, has the clout needed to make a positive impact in the world if it so chooses. And it looks like this is exactly what it sets out to do. On the upcoming Top 6 performance show, American Idol will set out to raise millions of dollars to help quell poverty in Africa and here in the United States. The details are still somewhat vague, but this is what we learned from Ryan Seacrest last night.

For every vote cast after that show, a number of sponsors will be donating an undisclosed sum to the relief effort.

Voters themselves will also be given the opportunity to make their own donations.

It won't just be the big sponsors, but American Idol itself will make some donations.

That night will boast some big guest appearances, including Pink, Gwen Stefani and Bono, although it is unclear whether Bono will be performing or just appearing.

We will also "hear from Africa". It's also not clear what this means, but it seems like this is where Bono will be involved, and I'm guessing we'll be getting a live feed from somewhere in Africa.

The awareness of the extreme poverty and widespread atrocities on the African continent seems to have increased significantly in the last few years. Say what you will about Bono, but he is using all the pull he has to do as much good as he possibly can. American Idol, at this point, almost has a responsibility to do some good in the world. It's not all that often a show achieves such a universally popular state, and the platform the show can utilize is not something to be taken lightly. If American Idol can change the world for the better, then all this media saturation and all these Simon Cowell insults and abominable auditions will have been completely worth the trouble.

And, from the same site:

American Idol’s semi-finalist Antonella Barba has been offered $500,000 by an online adult DVD renter called SugrarDVD. According to TMZ.com, her first gig, if she accepts the offer, would be to host a launch party for the company’s new video-on-demand service.
And...

Well, that was a surprising episode. Last night's American Idol Results Show eliminated four singers from the show, cutting the remaining contestants down from 16 to 12. These eliminations were nothing short of shocking. But, we'll get to those in a second. First, let's take a look at your 2007 American Idol Top 12.

Blake Lewis

Chris Richardson

Phil Stacey

Brandon Rogers

Chris Sligh

Sanjaya Malakar

Lakisha Jones

Melinda Doolittle

Haley Scarnato

Gina Glocksen

Stephanie Edwards

Jordin Sparks

See any big surprises in there? Sanjaya Malakar, who has yet to put on a good performance, makes it past elimination again. The judges were completely shocked, as was any rational human being. Sanjaya seems like a nice guy, and I know he's doing his best, but that's no excuse to vote for him. It's a frustrating thing that undermines the credibility of the show. Yes, I understand that the voting is what Idol is all about, but it doesn't mean it's right.

On the girls' side, the big surprise among the Top 12 is Haley Scarnato, who had gotten reamed by the judges on numerous occasions. I didn't think she was that good, but she wasn't deserving of the verbal lashings that Simon threw at her. She won't make it much further in the competition, anyway, so her inclusion is no reason to fret.

Okay, so let's look at the four eliminated singers:

Jared Cotter:

Jared was visibly shocked when he was informed of his fate, but he shouldn't have been. Jared is a pretty good singer, but lacks anything special. He didn't separate himself from the pack.

Sundance Head:

The biggest travesty of the night. Having Sundance go home instead of Sanjaya is unfathomable. I'll be the first to admit that Sundance hasn't performed up to his potential, but even when he's underwhelmed, he's been twice as good as Sanjaya. When he was in his wheelhouse, he had the best voice of any male on the show. Sundance, conceivably, could've won American Idol this year.

Sabrina Sloan:

Probably deserved to stay on over Haley. That said, I found Sabrina's final performance to be lackluster and, apparently, the voters agreed. Still, she has more talent than Haley.

Antonella Barba:

Goodbye, Antonella. It's been a good ride. In an elimination that was a couple of weeks overdue, Antonella left the stage gracefully. But don't kid yourselves; this won't be the last we see of our dear Antonella.

So, there you have it. The Top 12 gets underway next week, and I'm sure you'll all be watching, as will I. Who do you think has the best chance to win it all? Who do you think should be in the top 12 that isn't? Comment below.

I'd never visited that website for American Idol stuff before but I've bookmarked it for future reference. In all honesty, however, I think our own Purple Reign's reviews have been just as good.

OK gang "The Big Show" started last night starring "THE ULTIMATE DIVA", Diana Ross. The most successful female artist in music history. 40 plus years of musical excellence and one of the few with a complete musical catalog. Were the contestants up for the challenge. Could the guys belt out a Diana tune and sell it to the public.

PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT - Ms. Lakisha Jones (A)
This girl has AT-TI-TUDE!!!!! She just oozes confidence and musical ability. She could have overdone "God Bless The Child", but she stayed under complete control and did something that only the greats master, and that is hold something back and remain entertaining and effective. What keeps her from the + is that I am still waiting for her to breakout with a complete entertaining performance. Something that is signature and entergetic. She has mastered the ballad or show tune. I want her to get me out of my seat and shake my money maker. That has not happened, but I can't wait.

The rest of the performances in order......

Brandon Rogers (C-)
Corny as hell!!! Boring, and forgot his words. To me he does not have the stage presence. You Can’t Hurry Love is one of the most Idol-ize songs on this show, and he did nothing to make it stand out.

Melinda Doolittle (A-)
As of this point in the competition she has done no wrong. As Lakisha, she sang her own “Showstopper” and nailed it. They called her a young Gladys Knight and I agree. And her simple image is for sure being jazzed up, she looked great!!!

Chris Sligh (D+)
His soft rock version of Endless Love did not work for me. It was very awkward. Last night did not show any range in his voice, just straight forward. Kind of like “I just want to sing this song and get it over with”. Worst performance to date.

Gina Glockson (C+)
She was just OK, but she will definitely last another week.To me she has no star power. Her words were not enunciated quite right, and Ms. Ross pointed that out in the beginning. But she stays in tune.

Sanjaya Malakar (C)
Here is where I kind of disagree with the judges. I thought he was a little better than they gave him credit. In my view there were at least two performances that were worst. But Sanjaya is SO SOFT!!! He seems to be morphing into a girl right in front of our eyes. But he needs to sing in a higher key, to allow his vocals to shine.

Haley Scarnato (F)
HORRIBLE!!!!! I had high hopes for Haley during her pre interview with Seacrest. She saying that she was going to relax and have fun. And she was the complete opposite. She froze like an ice cube. She forgot her words…..how do you forget your words after a week of practice on just one song???? Nerves, that’s how. She is way out of her league.

Phil Stacey (B)
By far, the best male voice in the competition. I thought his version of “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” was dragging a little, but he sang it. Look this guy can sing…period!!! But can he draw America into what he does? WAS THAT LIPSTICK HE HAD ON LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!

Blake Lewis (B-)
I will admit that I am biases towards this guy. I love Blake’s style. He reminds me of Usher, who is one of the top performers in the world. Blake is a performer and is a producer. And he tried to do some producing of Diana Ross classic, and it did not come off quite right. But with that said, he was manageable and will continue on.

Stephanie Edwards (C/C-)
I give her a B for the vocals but a D for the performance. She just messed that song up, man. If you know Love Hangover, it has that disco, up tempo groove that makes it a classic 70’s hit. WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED TO THE GROOVE!!! It never came and I was extremely disappointed. It just brought the whole performance down.

Chris Richardson (C)
Average, and I will leave it at that. He is a Justin Timberlake mini-me, and I just can’t get over that.

Jordin Sparks (C)
Here is another one that I didagreed with the judges. I didn’t know that song, but that is OK. She was all’ight I guess. I like her a lot, but she didn’t do it for me last night. Mary had a little lamb in her throat BAAAAHHH!! It was a typical Disney movie song, and I want her to get out of that syrupy sweet image. Took a slight step back in my eyes, but she will still go a long way.

PREDICTED BOTTOM THREE – Haley, Brandon, and Stephanie

Brandon will be going home tonight, only because Haley will be the recipient of the Vote for the Worst Votes.

Sanjaya has won himself another week on AI. I almost find myself rooting for this kid...

Melinda and Lakisha have done it again, which may be a little unfair. I think they are both bigger than AI.

Last night was horrid. Melinda and Lakisha and a bunch of scrubs. Although I wouldn't expect much from the guys given the material they have to work with.

(spoiler if you havn't watched last night)

Well one more week of Sunjayah. I am shocked that Phil was down there with him and not Hayley. Brandon, well, I can't say I am shocked to see him leave. That someone again went before Sun is starting to make me a little crazy, but he is inching closer and closer to going home at least. Brandon just didn't bring it when he had to. Auditions were his best round and he never found his groove after that. I don't think we will see him making a career either. To me he is forgetable.

I don't believe Sanjaya is really in the bottom 2/3 every week. After 4 weeks in a row it has to be impossible, especially the previous weeks where they were booting 4 people a week. The AI people are manipulating things or someone has found a way to hack the voting system to make him come in 2nd (or 5th) every week. The former seems more likely than the latter.

I hope Nosferatu goes home soon. VF I agree with your top 3, I'd put Jordin above Gina though. They should send the rest home tomorrow.

Nosferatu has the best voice of the men IMHO. Before he goes, Hayley, Sanjayah, Chris R. and Jordin should go home. It really doesn't matter because it will be Melinda or Lakisha.

Again-People are blaming this votefortheworst.com for saving Sanjayah. Simon should choose the next American Idol and nobody else. I have decided!!!

Yes I meant Phil and while I mostly agree about his voice I also think he has no clue how to use it. He thinks he's a diva, going for glory notes and trying to overpower songs and sections. My bigger problem though is that he bores me. As does Stephanie who is another with a talented voice but an apparent lack of good musical sensibility to accompany it.

Ok, I can see that PDX, but to me that is easily fixed. You can't make a good singer from a bad voice, but you can gain stage presence and be less boring. Sanjayah could even be 1000 times better than he is if he just woke up and really sold a song. He has a nice, pleasant voice, little voice but nothing backing it up. Unfortunately he is young and scared and it won't happen. With Phil, I think he could get less boring.
For me it's just nice to see one of the men who can actually legitemately sing.

It seems like it would be easier to fix any spotty vocals from a guy like Blake in Pro Tools then it would be to do a total makeover on Phil. I hate to say it but vocal ability has little to do with success in pop music. Even Kelly Clarkson who is the only contestant to have shown any long term viability has met with greater success when she went from material highlighting her vocals to poppy light-rock fluff.

Totally agree on Sanjayah... I wish they had sent him home early on and sat with him privately and told him that he could easily go on the show now and be the butt of everyone's joke or come back in 3 years and make a serious run. But I actually think the producers like having him around for that purpose which makes me sad.

Sanjaya is the person being touted on the votefortheworst.com website. In addition, Howard Stern has been telling all his listeners to vote for him to keep him on as long as possible.

I think it's cruel becuase it was obvious after last night that he's realizing something is going on. I don't think the AI people are manipulating anything. I think it's a shame they can't figure out some way to remove the lunatic fringe vote, but hopefully - like with Chicken Little - people will eventually tire of their little game.

But Sanjaya has only been VFTW for the last week, it was Sundance and Antonella before they were eliminated. He has also been one of the top vote getters according to Dial Idol which in the past had been a very accurate indicator of the final outcome and since we don't get official vote totals it is the best info we have to go on.

The AI producers manipulate just about every other minute detail of the show to influence the results and/or build suspense. The order in which the contestants perform and the way the contestants are seated are two glaring examples of this, others include the backdrops that contestants perform under along with effects that are given to certain performers to enhance the packaging of their act (see Chris Daughtry and the smoke and lighting he got).

While I have no reason to believe that they have ever sent someone home that didn't receive the fewest votes I don't believe that the second contestant in the "bottom 2" is always the second lowest vote getter. Nikki McKibbin predated vote for the worst, dial idol and everything else with similar results and I'm sure they manipulated her too. Any other explanation seems implausible but I won't say impossible.

The other thing we have to consider is the sympathy factor, especially by younger girls who think it's just horrible the way Simon has picked on Sanjaya.

Regardless, it's now to the point where HE knows he shouldn't really be sticking around and that's a shame because no one needs that kind of humiliation IMHO.

VF I agree. The other night, Sanjayah seemed sad walking back to the final 11. I certainly wouldn't want to stick around to have 3 people tell me I suck on National TV every week. You could really see it on Wed night.

That said, he is not going to win. And, yes VF I believe like Chicken Little it will die down. Hopefully sooner than later.

More than just pity its possible the young girls just think he's dreamy. Either way it seems pretty clear he has checked out and doesn't really want to be there anymore.

I do think he is embarassed.
The worst part is he doesn't even have the fun loving personality that Chicken Little did about his sex symbol status and flirting with the girls.
